Black History Month poems for kids can open conversations about Black history, identity, resilience, culture, and the arts. There is no reliable age rating that makes any poem suitable for every child: choose by reading readiness, emotional intensity, length, and what you want the reading to accomplish, and preview the complete poem before sharing it.

20 poems to consider for Black History Month

This selection draws on the Academy of American Poets’ collection and a teacher resource’s recommendations. It is not the same list as Matthew Lynch’s January 2, 2025 article titled “20 Powerful Black History Month Poems for Kids of All Ages”: that search result confirms only six titles, and the article’s full list could not be verified. The poems below are useful starting points, not standardized age or reading-level assignments.

Poem Poet A possible focus
“Still I Rise” Maya Angelou Resilience and voice
“Knoxville, Tennessee” Nikki Giovanni Everyday pleasures and sensory detail
“Theme for English B” Langston Hughes Identity and belonging
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” James Weldon Johnson Song, history, and collective voice
“The Bronze Legacy” Effie Lee Newsome Black heritage
“Tending” Elizabeth Alexander Contemporary poetry and care
“The Gift To Sing” James Weldon Johnson Hope and a shift in mood
“Dreams” Langston Hughes Metaphor and creative writing
“The Undefeated” Kwame Alexander Historical figures and Black achievement
“Mother to Son” Langston Hughes Perseverance and family voice
“I, Too” Langston Hughes Belonging and exclusion
“Harlem” Langston Hughes Dreams, imagery, and consequence
“We Real Cool” Gwendolyn Brooks Rhythm, voice, and choices
“Learning To Read” Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Literacy and the history of enslavement
“The Slave Auction” Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Slavery and its human cost
“Ballad of Birmingham” Dudley Randall Civil rights history, violence, and loss
“I saw Emmett Till this week at the grocery store” Wherever possible, verify the poet attribution in the complete source text before teaching Racial violence and historical memory
“Harriet Tubman” Eloise Greenfield Historical biography
“Martin Luther King Jr.” Nikki Giovanni Leadership and civil rights history
“Ruby Bridges” Maya Angelou School desegregation and a child’s experience

The Academy’s collection includes classic and contemporary Black poets, and links to related lesson plans. The teacher resource groups several selections under “poems for young students,” but that heading is not a standardized age rating. For the final four titles, the Edvocate search result gives the first three names and attributions; verify the complete poem and its attribution before use. Its result lists “Langston Hughes” by Walter Dean Myers and “Rosa Parks” by Jacqueline Woodson among its other examples, but those titles are not included here because the list is already at twenty.

How to choose a poem for a child or class

Consider emotional readiness

Some poems use playful or familiar imagery; others address slavery, racial violence, death, bereavement, or civil rights trauma. Review the full text and think about the child, the setting, and the support available for discussion. For younger readers, begin with poems suggested for young students, but still assess each poem individually.

Match length and form to the occasion

A compact poem or songlike form may work well for a short read-aloud. A longer or more layered poem can support close reading, discussion of imagery, or attention to rhythm and structure. Length alone does not determine difficulty or suitability.

Choose the purpose before the poem

  • History: Select a poem connected to a person, event, or historical period, and provide context rather than asking the poem to stand in for a full history lesson.
  • Identity and belonging: Consider poems such as “Theme for English B” or “I, Too,” then invite reflection without requiring children to disclose personal experiences.
  • Resilience: “Still I Rise” and “Mother to Son” offer opportunities to discuss voice and perseverance.
  • Craft and creativity: Examine metaphor, sensory images, sound, repetition, or a change in mood, then let students try a related writing exercise.

Access to the full poem and trustworthy background material matters too. The Academy collection provides poem selections and related lesson-plan links; the teacher resource offers classroom prompts and cautions readers to preview sensitive material.

Turn “Dreams” into metaphor writing

Write from the senses after “Knoxville, Tennessee”

Nikki Giovanni’s poem can lead into sensory writing about a favorite season: students can list what they see, hear, smell, taste, or feel, then build those details into a short poem.

Kwame Alexander’s poem can prompt discussion of the historical figures it evokes. Use Black poetry beyond February

Black History Month can be a natural time to introduce these poems, but it need not be the only time to read them. The Academy of American Poets presents its collection as a way to explore the African American poetry tradition throughout the year. Returning to poems in different contexts can also make room for study of craft, history, and contemporary writing beyond a single commemorative month.
