Former UFC fighter BJ Penn was arrested and charged twice in May 2025 in connection with reported family-abuse incidents involving his mother, Lorraine Shin. The identity claim in the coverage was Shin’s account that Penn believed she was an imposter—not evidence that her identity had been stolen. Later police releases reported separate arrests and charges in 2025, and a May 2026 news report said a judge found Penn competent to proceed. The sources cited here do not establish the current disposition of any case.
What was alleged about Penn’s mother?
In a May 2025 report based on Hawaiʻi County court documents, Maui Now said Shin alleged that Penn accused her of killing his family and taking over his mother’s identity. The outlet quoted Shin as saying, “He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.” This is Shin’s account of what Penn allegedly believed, as reported by Maui Now; it does not establish that her identity was stolen. What happened in the May 2025 abuse-charge reports?
Maui Now reported that Penn was arrested and charged twice within a few days with abuse of a family or household member. According to the outlet’s account of court documents, Shin alleged incidents involving mail, a flashlight and being shoved against a vehicle. She also alleged that Penn returned after a 48-hour no-contact warning, leading to the second arrest. These are reported allegations, not findings of guilt. Maui Now’s May 2025 report
What later arrests and charges were reported?
September 2025: alleged protection-order violation
Hawaiʻi Police Department said Penn was arrested and charged on Sept. 16, 2025, after allegedly entering a property in violation of a protection order for which he was the respondent. Police said he later posted $2,000 bail. The department’s release reports an arrest and charge, not a finding of guilt. Hawaiʻi Police Department release

What did the May 2026 court update say?
A KHON Honolulu report syndicated by Yahoo said a Third Circuit Court judge found Penn competent to proceed after a court-ordered fitness evaluation. That is a report about a procedural finding; it is not a verdict on the charges or a complete update on the cases. The report does not establish their current disposition as of Oct. 8, 2026.
