Highway Prayers makes its strongest case not by setting aside bluegrass, but by letting songs, stories and studio details stretch its familiar foundations. In Stephen Thomas Erlewine’s October 4, 2024 review for Pitchfork, the 20-track album’s experimentation works because it remains anchored in the music’s roots. That is one critic’s reading, not a universal verdict.
What kind of album is Highway Prayers?
Highway Prayers is a bluegrass album released September 27, 2024. Apple Music lists 20 songs and a total runtime of 1 hour and 14 minutes. Its length gives the record room to move among instrumental passages, character-driven songs, humor and quieter reflection rather than sustain one mood throughout.
Billy Strings and Jon Brion share production credit. Strings’ regular band—Billy Failing on banjo and vocals, Royal Masat on bass and vocals, Jarrod Walker on mandolin and vocals, and Alex Hargraves on fiddle—is joined by contributors including dobro player Jerry Douglas, fiddler Jason Carter, drummer Matt Chamberlain, backing vocalists Lindsay Lou and Taneka Samone, cellist Nathaniel Smith, pianist Cory Henry, and clawhammer banjo player Victor Furtado. The official credits also list Peter “Madcat” Ruth on harmonica and jaw harp.
The recording history spans several sessions: the official album page places some work at East West Studios in Los Angeles from June 28 to July 10, 2023, and other sessions in Nashville during January, February and March 2024. “Catch and Release” is credited to a January 31, 2021 session at Sound Emporium in Nashville; additional recording took place in Burbank in June 2024. Greg Koller mixed the album, and Patricia Sullivan mastered it at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The official credits and format listing provide the full details.

How does the production serve the songs?
Erlewine describes Brion’s production as a source of studio color rather than a wholesale change of direction. That distinction matters: the album’s added sounds and textures are presented as part of its bluegrass vocabulary, not as a replacement for the playing at its center. The contrast with Strings’ reputation for expansive live improvisation is therefore less a rejection of instrumental skill than a shift in emphasis toward crafted arrangements and songs.
Studio playfulness and momentum
On “MORBUD4ME,” Erlewine points to a rhythm track built from looped bong-rip and lighter sounds, an arrangement choice that lands as a low-key joke. “Leadfoot” uses a sampled vintage Chevrolet sound to support the feeling of a getaway song. In both cases, production contributes character: it makes the track’s premise audible rather than simply decorating a conventional arrangement.

Quietness and restraint
Other moments make their impression by easing off. Erlewine describes “Gild the Lily” as sweet and gently gliding. He singles out “Escanaba” and “Seney Stretch” for instrumental restraint and lingering grace. Against the album’s comic details and forward motion, these pieces let atmosphere and space carry the listener without demanding a show of virtuosity at every turn.
Which songs show the album’s emotional range?
The record’s breadth is clearest in the different kinds of stories it tells. “Seven Weeks in County” brings a jailhouse narrative together with ghostly strings, giving the song an uneasy atmosphere. “My Alice” is a plaintive lament, while “Catch and Release” turns a state trooper’s traffic stop into a comic talking blues. Their proximity in the track list makes the shift in tone part of the album’s pacing.

- Element Shield Packaging prolongs string life and keeps strings as fresh as the day they were made

“Stratosphere Blues / I Believe in You” works as a mini-suite: in Erlewine’s account, echoing vocals and keyboards give way to a direct plea for connection. The movement from a more atmospheric opening toward emotional plainness illustrates the critic’s central point: studio exploration can sharpen a song’s feeling rather than draw attention away from it.
For a quick route through the record’s different strengths, start with “MORBUD4ME” for studio humor, “Seven Weeks in County” for narrative atmosphere, “My Alice” for lament, “Catch and Release” for comic storytelling, and “Escanaba” or “Seney Stretch” for instrumental understatement. These are useful entry points, not a definitive ranking of the album.

Is Highway Prayers worth listening to?
For listeners who want bluegrass playing alongside strong songcraft, varied moods and audible studio choices, Erlewine’s review makes a persuasive case for giving the album time. Its 20 tracks move between comic bits, narrative songs, reflective writing and restrained instrumentals; listeners seeking an uninterrupted instrumental showcase may find its song-centered approach less compelling. The album’s range is best understood as a sequence of different characters and textures, rather than as a single sustained mood.
