Billy Corgan’s path from Smashing Pumpkins frontman to National Wrestling Alliance owner ran through a childhood fascination with wrestling and a turbulent management stint at TNA/Impact. In 2017, he agreed to acquire the NWA brand, then took control on October 1. The deal was not the purchase of a complete league with its old roster, affiliated promotions and video archive; it centered on the brand and associated rights.
Wrestling was a long-standing interest, not a sudden detour
Corgan was already famous as the frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins when he pursued a larger role in professional wrestling. But the interest predated his music career: in a 2024 Pollstar profile, he recalled watching local wrestling as a child with his great-grandmother. Years later, the appeal was still personal. “It scratches the itch that music used to scratch,” he said of wrestling in that interview.
His TNA/Impact experience brought him closer to the business
Before buying the NWA, Corgan had worked inside wrestling management. He became president of TNA/Impact Wrestling in 2016, a position that gave him direct experience with the demands of running a promotion.
In a 2017 interview with Sports Illustrated, Corgan described financial and internal obstacles at TNA and said the experience frustrated him. He presented the later NWA venture as a chance to be his own boss. Those are his account and interpretation of the dispute, rather than an independent finding about every issue at TNA. The same profile reported that his dispute with the company’s new owners, Anthem Sports & Entertainment, had been resolved.

The NWA deal unfolded in two stages in 2017
- May 2017: Former NWA president Bruce Tharpe confirmed an agreement in principle for Corgan to acquire the organization’s brand, according to contemporaneous Cageside Seats reporting.
- October 1, 2017: Corgan’s control took effect. The NWA’s SoundCloud description for a Busted Open interview identifies that date as the point when he took control after purchasing the brand.
The distinction matters: May marked confirmation of an agreement in principle, while October 1 marked the start of his control. The available accounts are contemporaneous reporting and an NWA-posted interview description; they are not the underlying sale contract.
What Corgan bought—and what he did not
The transaction was centered on the NWA brand and related rights. Cageside Seats, citing PWInsider for deal details, reported that the sale did not include several pieces a reader might assume came with an established wrestling organization.

That distinction separates ownership of a historic name from ownership of every company, performer and archive connected to it. The cited account is secondary reporting, not a published contract, so the scope here should be understood as reported at the time.
His plan was to rebuild the brand for digital audiences
Corgan framed the acquisition as a long-term rebuilding project rather than a quick relaunch. In October 2017, he told Sports Illustrated: “The fundamental goal for the NWA is to create a 21st century entertainment brand very much pointed at the digital realm.” He connected the project to a history he described as dating to 1948, while arguing that the organization needed to regain relevance with contemporary viewers.

In a separate October 2017 Busted Open interview, excerpts of which were transcribed by Wrestlezone, Corgan said he wanted to “restitch the history where it belongs” and move the NWA forward. He also discussed the affiliate arrangements having lapsed and a shift toward a more centrally directed promotion. These comments document his intended direction and rationale; they do not by themselves establish how fully the strategy was carried out or what results it produced.

The NWA offered Corgan a way to combine a personal interest with the kind of creative control he said he wanted after TNA. Its long history gave him a recognizable identity to work with, while his proposed digital approach pointed toward building an audience through contemporary distribution rather than simply restoring the old structure. That is the logic he described in 2017—not proof that the plan succeeded on every front.

Pollstar still identified Corgan as NWA president and owner in its September 2024 profile. That description establishes his reported status at that time, but it is not a current confirmation of NWA leadership or operations in 2026.
