Billy Bean, the former Major League Baseball outfielder who later became one of MLB’s leading inclusion advocates, died at home on August 6, 2024, at age 60, after a yearlong fight with acute myeloid leukemia, MLB announced. He played for Detroit, Los Angeles and San Diego, came out publicly as gay in 1999 after his playing career ended, and joined MLB’s front office in 2014.
Who was Billy Bean?
Bean was a major-league outfielder from 1987 to 1995, playing for the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. MLB says he appeared in 272 games and recorded 519 plate appearances. Field Level Media reports a .226 batting average, five home runs and 53 RBIs. In his first major-league game, Bean had four hits, tying a major-league record, according to MLB.
He is sometimes confused with Billy Beane, the Oakland Athletics executive associated with Moneyball. They are different people: the former player’s surname is Bean, without a final “e.”
When did Billy Bean come out?
Bean came out publicly as gay in 1999, after his major-league career had ended. MLB says he made the announcement more than three years after his final game; a contemporaneous account places it in an interview with the Miami Herald. He was not an active MLB player when he came out.

What did Bean do for MLB after playing?
In July 2014, MLB hired Bean as its first Ambassador for Inclusion. He worked on player education, LGBTQ inclusion, social justice initiatives, anti-bullying education and broader inclusion efforts with clubs. MLB says he was promoted to vice president and special assistant to the commissioner in 2017, and five years later became senior vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Bean described using shared ground to open conversations with people who might disagree. In a 2016 interview with LMU Magazine, he said, “I talk about the fact that, regardless of differences between us, we have shared values about baseball: respect for our sport and the responsibility that goes with being a player.” He also recalled Commissioner Rob Manfred’s view that “It’s different when a peer or a colleague is sharing a message.”

After Bean’s death, Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. said Bean made baseball a better institution “by the power of his example, his empathy, his communication skills, his deep relationships inside and outside our sport, and his commitment to doing the right thing.” Callen-Lorde Executive Vice President Donnie Roberts said Bean had amplified “the importance of inclusion and visibility” through his work with MLB, the health organization and beyond. These are colleagues’ assessments of his impact, not measurements of the views or experiences of every player.
What was Billy Bean’s memoir?
Bean wrote Going the Other Way. LMU Magazine gives the full title as Going the Other Way: Lessons From a Life In and Out of Major League Baseball.

What did MLB say about his legacy?
MLB’s September 2024 memorial described colleagues remembering Bean’s personal conversations and work to change baseball’s culture. The account also said MLB donated $50,000 to Callen-Lorde in his memory and announced a planned exam-room dedication for 2025; those details describe the memorial announcement, not confirmation of the dedication’s later status. The same account referred to two living openly gay major-league players at that time, a 2024-specific statement rather than a current count.
