The title frames an interview about why Yes drummer Bill Bruford returned after retirement and mentions “Close to the Edge,” but the interview itself—and Bruford’s stated reason for returning—could not be verified. What is documented is a recent connection to the song: in September 2026, Bruford praised Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks for performing it as a concert opener.
What can be confirmed about Bruford’s return?
The available sources do not establish when or why Bruford “un-retired,” or provide his own account of the decision. Without the original interview, attributing a motive to him would be speculation. The title’s framing is not enough to treat a particular explanation as a verified statement.

Bruford’s official website describes a musical career spanning rock and jazz drumming. That context speaks to the range of his work, but it does not answer why he returned to music.
What is Bruford’s connection to “Close to the Edge”?
In a post dated September 7, 2026, Bruford’s official website attributes this reaction to him after he and Carolyn saw Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks perform “Close to the Edge” as a show opener: “By the time they were done with that old warhorse ‘Close to the Edge’ as an opener, Carolyn and I knew we were in safe hands.” The remark documents his response to their performance; it is not an explanation of his retirement or return.

YES catalog context
Separately, the official YES website announced Keys to Ascension: The Studio Recordings, a collection of studio recordings from the two Keys to Ascension volumes, originally released in 1996 and 1997. The announcement lists vinyl and a studio CD edition. This is broader YES catalog context, not evidence about the recording connected to the title or the missing interview. Check the official announcement for current release information.
