The connection was the timing: Clark’s reported rookie base salary of $76,535 had become a focus of public discussion. That figure was her 2024 base salary—not her total possible income—and the WNBA’s labor terms and salary outlook have since changed under a new agreement for 2026–2032.
What Biden said—and whether he named Caitlin Clark
On April 16, 2024, Biden posted: “Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share. It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.” The archived post is timestamped 4:58 p.m. Read the archived statement.
Biden did not name Clark. His message addressed women in sports broadly; it was linked to her in public discussion because it appeared as attention was building around the salary of the Indiana Fever’s new No. 1 draft pick.
What Caitlin Clark’s reported rookie salary covered
Clark was selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Contemporary reports put her 2024 base salary at $76,535 and the value of her four-year contract at $338,056. These were reported contract figures, not a statement of all income she might earn. The Los Angeles Times reported the figures and discussed other potential earnings; CBS News also reported her salary.

The distinction matters: base salary is not the same as total earnings. The Los Angeles Times reported that the WNBA said Clark could earn $500,000 or more in WNBA earnings that season if marketing agreements and performance bonuses were included. That was a conditional estimate, not guaranteed salary. Endorsements and partnerships are separate from her WNBA base pay.
Why a simple NBA comparison can mislead
Comparing Clark’s rookie salary with an NBA rookie’s can illustrate the difference between the leagues’ pay scales, but it does not by itself establish a like-for-like gender pay comparison. The WNBA and NBA have different business economics and media-rights arrangements, and player compensation is negotiated through separate collective bargaining agreements. A precise explanation of the gap would require comparable financial and labor data, not salary figures alone.

The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the WNBA had not publicly released its revenue figures at that time. Without a public, comparable revenue basis, a precise revenue-share calculation or a single definitive cause for the salary difference would overstate what the available evidence shows. How WNBA collective bargaining sets salaries
A WNBA collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is the agreement between the league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association that sets employment terms, player rights and obligations, salary caps, and benefits. That is why Clark’s 2024 salary should be treated as a dated figure under the terms applying then, not as a current WNBA salary benchmark.

The WNBA announced a new seven-year CBA covering 2026–2032. The league said the agreement includes revenue sharing and projected more than $1 billion in player salaries and benefits over its term. Its published 2026 figures and longer-term projections are:

These are league-reported agreement terms and projections, not an estimate of what a particular player will receive. The WNBA said existing rookie-scale contracts would be adjusted upward, but it has not stated Clark’s individual salary under the new agreement in the cited releases. It would be inaccurate to derive her 2026 pay from leaguewide averages or projections.
Players ratified the terms on March 23, 2026, and the Board of Governors ratified them on March 24. The long-form agreement was completed and signed on May 22, 2026, according to the league. The WNBA’s announcement sets out the agreement and its projections; its ratification release records the approval timeline.
