Beyond: Two Souls is worth considering if you want a character-led, cinematic story more than mechanically deep action. Critics praised its acting, emotional impact, and presentation, but their response to its gameplay and narrative execution was divided. The reception also varies by platform: the PC Metacritic snapshot was more favorable than the PS3 snapshot.
What kind of game is Beyond: Two Souls?
Quantic Dream’s psychological action thriller follows Jodie Holmes, who was born connected to Aiden, a mysterious entity with supernatural powers. The story traces Jodie’s life as she faces challenges and losses and searches for the truth about herself. Players take actions as both Jodie and Aiden, and those actions affect Jodie’s fate. Quantic Dream describes the game and its features as an interactive, cinematic experience.
That format makes the game a better fit for players who enjoy character-focused storytelling, dramatic scenes, and choices than for those looking primarily for complex action systems. The game does include action and interaction sequences; the criticism is that their depth and execution did not satisfy every reviewer.
What did critics think?
Metacritic’s platform pages show different results, so the scores are best read as separate snapshots rather than a single universal verdict. The figures below were displayed on October 7, 2026; aggregator scores and review counts can change.
#1 Best Overall

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

| Version | Metacritic critic snapshot | Distribution shown |
|---|---|---|
| PS3 | 70/100, “Mixed or Average,” across 98 reviews | 52 positive, 38 mixed, 8 negative |
| PC | 76/100, “Generally Favorable,” across 15 reviews | 8 positive, 6 mixed, 0 negative |
The PS3 critic page reflects a larger sample of reviews from the game’s 2013 release period. The PC critic page reflects a smaller, later sample, with visible reviews dating from 2019 onward. The more favorable PC score does not establish that PC players will prefer that version.
What reviewers praised—and what divided them
Performances, emotion, and presentation
Positive excerpts highlighted the emotional story, acting, visuals, and production. A Digital Spy review excerpt reproduced on Metacritic called the game “one of the most poignant and enthralling stories we have encountered in a video game.” A GameSpot excerpt described it as “A fascinating experience that expertly links story and mechanics to further your connection to the world.” These are critics’ assessments, not claims made by the developer.

Gameplay and storytelling reservations
Some reviewers found the gameplay’s limitations hard to overlook. A PC review excerpt from GameOver.gr praised the cast and story while describing the gameplay as “oversimplified.” Other surfaced criticism points to writing or control issues. These responses suggest a genuine trade-off: the cinematic approach can support the drama, but it may feel restrictive if you expect more mechanically involved play. The excerpts are examples of recurring themes, not a count of every review.
Which version should you choose?
GameSpot lists the first release as October 8, 2013, with PC, PS3, and PS4 versions. Sony’s US PlayStation listing gives the PS4 version a release date of November 24, 2015. The versions should not be treated as identical in every feature; check the specific edition’s listing for the options that matter to you.
