Billboard describes its chart as a weekly U.S. ranking of album popularity compiled with Luminate. Its equivalent-unit formula combines album sales, track-equivalent albums and streaming-equivalent albums. For this report, one unit equaled one album sale, 10 individual track sales, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams. Was Beyoncé the first Black woman to top the country albums chart?
Yes. With Cowboy Carter at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to lead that chart, which Billboard says began in January 1964. This is an album-chart milestone; it should not be confused with the separate Hot Country Songs chart. On that songs chart, three tracks from the album simultaneously occupied the top three positions, making Beyoncé the first woman to do so, according to Billboard’s report on the country-chart records.

Cowboy Carter also reached No. 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart, a separate result for a different country and chart publisher. The Official Charts profile lists April 11, 2024, as its first chart date and identifies the release as Beyoncé’s eighth studio album, released March 29, 2024. Billboard reported that the March 29, 2024 release included a standard 19-track vinyl edition in black, red, white and blue variants; a CD edition with an additional song, “Flamenco”; and digital download and streaming editions. Physical configurations were sold exclusively through Beyoncé’s official webstore at launch. Billboard later reported that CD and vinyl editions became widely available to retailers beginning April 12, 2024. In the release announcement, Beyoncé framed the project as “about genres, all of them, while deeply rooted in Country.” That is the artist’s description of the project, rather than an independent genre classification. The statement appears in Parkwood’s release announcement.
