Beyoncé’s crimson, crystal-covered chaps look is an archival Thierry Mugler design from the designer’s Spring/Summer 1992 “Cow-Boys” collection—not a newly released costume. Styled by Shiona Turini and photographed by Blair Caldwell for Cowboy Carter vinyl-cover imagery, the ensemble turns traditional riding gear into a high-impact fashion statement.
The red Mugler look: archival design, new context
Marie Claire describes Beyoncé wearing flared chaps covered in crimson rhinestones with a low-cut bodysuit, fringed gloves and a crystal-embellished 10-gallon hat. The outfit is credited to Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1992 “Cow-Boys” collection; Shiona Turini styled the shoot and Blair Caldwell photographed it. Marie Claire’s account of the vinyl-cover look identifies the pieces as archival.
The distinction matters: the imagery may be new to the vinyl-cover context, but the Mugler ensemble itself dates to 1992. It is not the same look as Beyoncé’s denim Louis Vuitton chaps or the red-white-and-blue outfit associated with the original Cowboy Carter cover.
How the chaps fit into Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter style
The crimson Mugler ensemble is one part of a broader run of chaps looks. On Cowboy Carter release day, March 29, 2024, Beyoncé shared imagery in denim chaps from Louis Vuitton’s 2024 menswear collection, worn over denim underwear with a ripped white tank and cowboy hat, as reported by Glamour. Bustle also describes red-white-and-blue leather and gray leather versions among her other chaps-and-bodysuit combinations in its overview of Beyoncé’s chaps outfits.

Across these looks, the chaps act as the visual centerpiece: leather, denim or embellished fabric supplies the Western reference, while the styling around it shifts from pared-back denim to rhinestones and fringe. The Mugler look stands apart for its archival provenance and all-over crimson sparkle.
What “assless chaps” means—and what chaps are for
Chaps are traditionally protective garments worn over trousers to shield a rider’s legs. In contemporary fashion styling, they may instead be worn over a bodysuit or underwear, leaving the legs and the garment’s open construction visible. “Assless chaps” is colloquial fashion language for that styling; it does not describe a separate conventional riding design. How to borrow the silhouette for a concert outfit
The practical takeaway is the silhouette, not the archival custom outfit. For a wearable interpretation, start with Western chaps sold as a category, then choose how much of the look to echo: fringe for movement, a cowboy hat for an unmistakable Western cue, or a simple fitted base layer to keep the chaps in focus.
- Choose chaps for the occasion. Decide whether you want a fashion or costume piece, or gear intended for practical riding; the construction and coverage have different purposes.
- Check coverage and fit. Consider the material, how the chaps attach and sit over your base layer, and whether the cut offers the coverage you expect.
- Add one recognizable accent. A hat or fringe can evoke the styling without reproducing every detail of Beyoncé’s rhinestone-heavy ensemble.
Bustle’s concert-outfit account describes its writer wearing suede chaps from Understated Leather with a black cowboy hat from Lack of Color and Levi’s denim shorts. That is one writer’s recreation, not Beyoncé’s Mugler outfit; the same article mentions a Paris Texas chaps product sold through Understated Leather.
