For most 24/7 music-video channels, start with 1080p at 30 fps. Move to 1440p30 when your video is natively 1440p and your upload connection can sustain the higher bitrate with room to spare. Use 4K or 60 fps only when the source footage and motion justify the extra bandwidth. These are practical recommendations—not a special YouTube rule for music streams.
Choose resolution based on the source and connection
A stream cannot recover visual detail that is missing from its source. If your music videos are 1080p, sending them at 1440p or 4K only upscales the image; YouTube does not say that upscaling improves the viewer experience or triggers a better transcode. Match the stream to the best-quality source material you actually have.
YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The resolution you send is therefore an ingest setting, not a guarantee that every viewer will watch at that resolution. YouTube recommends selecting a quality suited to your available connection and testing upload bitrate before going live (YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance).
YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates
The following are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates. They are targets for the incoming stream, not promised playback bitrates. The codec options shown are AV1 or H.265/HEVC and H.264.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Practical starting point for typical music-video loops, especially when the source is 1080p or upload headroom is limited. |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps | Consider for native 1440p footage and a reliably strong upload connection. |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps | Use when the source and audience justify 4K and the full streaming pipeline can sustain the bitrate. |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps | For footage with meaningful motion that benefits from 60 fps. |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps | For native 1440p material with high-frame-rate motion and sufficient upload capacity. |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps | For genuine 4K60 footage and a connection that can sustain the highest demands in this table. |
These figures are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. Measure sustained upload performance rather than relying on a brief peak speed; leave headroom for normal fluctuations and other network use. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health before and during the broadcast (YouTube’s live encoder recommendations).
Is 30 fps or 60 fps better for music videos?
For mostly static or gently moving visuals—such as album art, a performance shot with little camera movement, or a slow landscape loop—30 fps is usually sufficient. That is practical guidance, not a YouTube-specific rule. Choose 60 fps when the source really contains motion that benefits from it, and only if your encoder and upload connection can sustain the corresponding bitrate. Raising frame rate without useful motion increases the stream’s demands without necessarily making the picture look better.

Encoder settings that matter
For YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS ingest, the supported video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends keyframes every 2 seconds, and says keyframes must not be more than 4 seconds apart. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers (encoder settings and connection guidance).
- Resolution and frame rate: Use the source’s native resolution and choose 30 or 60 fps according to its motion and your upload capacity.
- Bitrate: Set a CBR bitrate appropriate for the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec using the table above.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval where your encoder allows it; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Connection: Prefer RTMPS where supported, then test the actual upload path with the encoder settings you intend to use.
- Automatic detection: YouTube recommends allowing Live Control Room to detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default. A custom stream key allows manual selection.
Before committing to a long broadcast, run a representative test with the actual video and audio. Watch stream health and review Live Control Room messages while it is live. A test using a still image or a different bitrate may not expose problems that arise with the real playlist.

Plan for archives and rewind separately
A 24/7 stream has a significant archive tradeoff: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends keeping a local recording backup (Archive live streams). DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours (DVR on live streams).
If reliable replays or rewind matter, consider ending and restarting sessions before the 12-hour threshold, and record a local backup. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish whether a particular restart schedule affects reach, notifications or monetization, so do not assume those outcomes.
