Best YouTube Live Bitrate for Static Artwork and Slow Video

YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 8 Mbps at 720p30, with no separate bitrate class for static artwork. Learn how to test the setting against your actual image and connection.

Static artwork does not get a special YouTube Live bitrate recommendation. Choose the setting for your codec, resolution, and frame rate: YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. Treat these as starting points, not guarantees of the quality viewers will receive.

Recommended YouTube Live bitrate for static artwork

For a 1080p30 stream encoded in H.264, start at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps. If you need a lower resolution, its H.264 recommendation for 720p30 is 8 Mbps. YouTube does not publish a separate, lower bitrate for still images or slow-moving scenes, so any setting below its recommendation is an experiment—not an official threshold.

Low motion may reduce how much visual information changes from frame to frame, but artwork can still expose compression artifacts. Small text, fine lines, gradients, and detailed overlays are worth checking closely. A bitrate minimum is not a promise of acceptable picture quality.

The following minimum and recommended values are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings page. The page’s publication date is not stated.

Ingestion resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

These are live-ingestion settings, not a guarantee of the final quality delivered to each viewer. YouTube also lists AV1 and H.265/HEVC: at 1080p30, its page gives those codecs a 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended; at 720p30, 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. Use those figures only if your encoder supports the selected codec.

How to choose and test a bitrate for artwork or slow video

  1. Pick the resolution and frame rate you need. Use 30 fps for artwork or content without a reason to preserve faster motion; choose a higher frame rate if the planned video genuinely needs it. Match the exact resolution-and-frame-rate row in YouTube’s table.
  2. Choose a supported codec and starting bitrate. For ordinary H.264 encoding, start with the recommended value for your row. Do not assume that still artwork qualifies for a lower official recommendation.
  3. Check upload capacity and stability. YouTube advises checking upload speed and choosing a reliable quality for your connection. Leave practical headroom for bitrate variation and other network use rather than planning to use every bit of available upload capacity.
  4. Test the actual scene before the event. Use the same artwork, text, overlays, transitions, audio, and movement you intend to stream. YouTube Help says to test before going live and to include audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  5. Inspect image quality and stream health. Look at small text, line edges, gradients, and transitions. If testing below YouTube’s recommended bitrate, keep the lower setting only if the image remains clean and the connection is stable; that lower value is your tested choice, not YouTube’s published recommendation.
  6. Monitor during the live stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. A speed test that succeeds once cannot establish that an internet connection will remain stable throughout a long broadcast.

Other encoder settings that matter

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS, and recommends RTMPS.
  • Bitrate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube lists support up to 60 fps. Choose the rate that suits the actual motion rather than increasing it solely because the stream is live.
  • SDR color: YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit video for SDR.
  • Audio: YouTube recommends stereo audio at 128 kbps and lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs.
  • Latency: YouTube notes that 4K/2160 streams use normal latency and cannot use its low-latency optimization option.

Troubleshooting bitrate and picture problems

  • Text or fine lines look smeared: Check the source artwork and preview at the intended resolution. Test the recommended bitrate for that resolution and frame rate, then compare using the same scene; a low-motion image is not automatically artifact-free.
  • The stream buffers, disconnects, or reports poor health: Check upload speed and connection stability, reduce competing network use, and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain with headroom. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
  • Changing bitrate does not fix the issue: Confirm that the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate correspond to the intended YouTube table row. Also check that CBR and the recommended keyframe interval are set.
  • A lower bitrate looks acceptable in a short test: Test transitions, audio, and the full range of planned movement as well as the still frame. Recheck stream health over a representative period; a brief clean result is not proof of reliable performance over a long broadcast.

Running a prerecorded visual 24/7
