Start with John Cena vs. Umaga at Royal Rumble 2007: it pairs a WWE Championship on the line with escalating arena-based violence and a finish built around the match’s defining ten-count. The picks below are an editorial selection, not an official WWE ranking.
What makes a great Last Man Standing match?
WWE describes the stipulation as a no-disqualification match that continues until a competitor cannot rise before the referee counts to ten. There are no pinfall or submission victories; if neither wrestler gets up in time, the bout can end in a no-contest. That makes each count a dramatic reset: a wrestler can recover, the action can escalate, and the finish may hinge on whether someone can stand rather than whether they have been pinned. WWE’s retrospective supplies the match history and finish details used in this list.
The order weighs how well each match establishes its stakes, builds through repeated counts, uses the setting and stipulation, and pays off its story. Those are editorial criteria, not a scoring system published by WWE.

John Cena vs. Umaga — Royal Rumble 2007 (WWE Championship)
Umaga had already injured Cena with a table splash on Raw, giving the champion a clear disadvantage before the bell. At the Royal Rumble on January 28, the championship match made the ten-count especially consequential: there were no pins, submissions, disqualifications, or count-outs to decide it. The violence escalated from steel steps to an announce-table crash and an attack with exposed turnbuckle hardware. Cena finally removed a ring rope, wrapped it around Umaga, and applied the STFU. Umaga passed out and could not answer the count, so Cena retained. It is the best first watch for a title stake, escalating use of the ring, and a finish that feels specific to the match. WWE’s event page confirms the date and championship stipulation.

-
Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H — Royal Rumble 2004 (World Heavyweight Championship)
This is the clearest double-down finish on the list. Triple H hit the Pedigree, but Michaels reached one knee before the count expired. Michaels then connected with Sweet Chin Music; both men were too spent to rise before ten. The referee called a no-contest, and Triple H retained the championship. The ending turns the count into the match’s final question: not who can pin the other, but whether either can recover.
-
The Rock vs. Mankind — St. Valentine’s Day Massacre 1999 (WWE Championship)
The Rock and Mankind struck each other with steel chairs at the same time and remained unconscious through the ten-count. The result was a no-contest, leaving Mankind champion. It is an early, straightforward demonstration that Last Man Standing does not guarantee a winner: both can be unable to continue.
-
Undertaker vs. Batista — Backlash 2007 (World Heavyweight Championship)
Batista used major power moves, including a spinebuster and Batista Bomb, without keeping Undertaker down. He eventually speared Undertaker off the stage into audio equipment, leaving both men unconscious. The referee ruled a no-contest, and Undertaker retained. Pick this one for a spectacular draw rather than a decisive finish.

Triple H vs. Randy Orton — No Mercy 2007 (WWE Championship)
The context makes this rematch unusual: after the title was vacated, Orton had already wrestled once and Triple H twice earlier that night. Orton won the Last Man Standing match when an RKO over the announcers’ table left Triple H unable to answer ten, making Orton champion. The accumulated workload gives the title change an added sense of attrition.

Triple H vs. Randy Orton — One Night Stand 2008
This later chapter of the rivalry ended when Orton landed awkwardly after being thrown over the top rope and could not rise before ten. WWE’s retrospective says he broke his collarbone in the landing. The result is a stark finish; the injury is part of WWE’s account, not a reason to treat the stunt as unscripted or imitate it.
-
Edge vs. John Cena — Backlash 2009 (World Heavyweight Championship)
The match carried the rivalry through the arena, with neither man staying down after major offense. Big Show intervened and chokeslammed Cena through a spotlight, allowing Edge to win the championship. The interference is central to the payoff: this is an arena-wide brawl with a heated, compromised finish rather than a clean victory.

John Cena vs. Batista — Extreme Rules 2010 (WWE Championship)
After repeated attempts failed to keep either wrestler down, Cena used duct tape found beneath the ring to tape Batista’s legs to a ring post. Batista could not stand and answer the count, so Cena won. The unusual solution is memorable because it uses the stipulation’s literal requirement—getting to one’s feet—instead of relying on a knockout or table crash.
-
Edge vs. Kane — SmackDown, January 7, 2011 (World Heavyweight Championship)
Edge focused on Kane’s knee and used a con-chair-to. Unable to put weight on the leg, Kane failed to rise before ten, allowing Edge to retain. The finish follows from the damage built into the match, making this a good choice for a story-led rather than surprise ending.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk — Extreme Rules 2011
WWE frames the rivalry as personal, and the finish is a sudden athletic counter: Orton caught Punk in mid-air with an RKO, leaving him down for the count. It is the pick for a fast, cleanly readable finishing sequence rather than a prolonged arena set piece.
