That is WWE’s editorial selection—not an objective statistical verdict—and the strongest cases rest on what the tournament did for a wrestler’s character, career opportunities and place in WWE history. The latest winner established by the official result covered here is Oba Femi, who defeated Jey Uso in the King of the Ring final on June 27, 2026.

In “Game of Thrones: The Top 10 Kings of the Ring,” published June 1, 2012, WWE ranked the winners below. The order reflects WWE’s judgment at that time; it is not a current, independently measured ranking.

Why these winners stand out
WWE does not publish a scoring system for its list. A useful way to compare the winners is to consider three things: what they accomplished in the tournament, what opportunity followed, and how strongly the win shaped their character or career. Those are editorial criteria, not WWE’s official methodology.

Steve Austin: a tournament moment became a defining identity
Austin is the clearest example of the crown becoming more than a victory. WWE’s account describes his win over Jake “The Snake” Roberts and his post-match promo as a star-making moment. Austin turned the biblical reference into a declaration of his own persona: “You sit there and you thump your Bible and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16. Austin 3:16 says ‘I just whipped your ass!’” WWE later characterized the performance as a platform for the “true ‘Stone Cold’” to emerge. That is a retrospective interpretation, but it explains why the 1996 tournament is so closely associated with his rise.
Randy Savage: a crown that kept working as a character device
Savage’s 1987 win is notable not only as a tournament result, but as part of a longer royal persona. WWE links the victory to his later “Macho King” identity, adopted after another King title victory in 1991. The crown could therefore function as an ongoing character element rather than a one-night accolade.

Booker T: a reinvention built around the title
Booker T’s 2006 victory led to “King Booker,” a deliberately theatrical character complete with a royal court and an affected British accent. WWE connects this period with main-event opportunities. The win stands out because it gave a new identity a clear premise and a way to extend beyond the tournament itself.
Triple H: an important chapter, not a career explanation
Triple H defeated Mankind in the 1997 final. WWE places the victory in a broader arc: he soon left the royal presentation behind as he formed D-Generation X and became a central Attitude Era figure. The tournament was part of that story, but it should not be treated as the sole cause of what followed.

Bret Hart: two tournament victories
Hart won in both 1991 and 1993, making him a two-time King of the Ring winner in WWE’s account. The second tournament was also the first held as a pay-per-view event. WWE connects Hart’s first win to a period of singles success and describes the repeat as unprecedented at the time.
Brock Lesnar: a direct route to a major title opportunity
Lesnar’s 2002 tournament win led to a WWE Championship match at SummerSlam, where he defeated The Rock. WWE described Lesnar as the youngest world champion in history at that point; that is a historical characterization and should not be read as a claim about the current record.

How King of the Ring changed over time
WWE’s historical retrospective says the first King of the Ring was a non-televised event held in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in July 1985. The tournament moved to pay-per-view in 1993 and ran annually through 2002. WWE says modified tournaments returned in 2006, 2008 and 2010. Those later editions should not be confused with an uninterrupted annual June pay-per-view series.
WWE describes the 1993–2002 tournament as a route into the main-event scene. Austin’s 1996 performance is its leading example of the format giving a wrestler both a platform and the confidence to reveal a new public identity. Who won King of the Ring most recently?
In the latest official result established here, Oba Femi defeated Jey Uso in the King of the Ring final at Night of Champions on June 27, 2026.
