For a Twitch Past Broadcast, use Twitch’s video menu; for other available VODs, yt-dlp offers command-line control over formats and file location. Streamlink is better understood as a way to play or extract supported streams than as a dedicated VOD archive manager. These methods save an existing replay—they are not instructions for capturing someone else’s active broadcast.
Choose the right route for the video you need
First establish whether the broadcast has ended and a replay exists. An archived video-on-demand (VOD) is different from an active livestream: download guidance for an available replay does not guarantee that a live broadcast can be saved, or that a replay will remain available.
- Your own Twitch past broadcast: Check Twitch’s video menu for the download or YouTube export option.
- Your own YouTube livestream replay: Check whether YouTube has archived the stream and whether the replay is available to you.
- An available, permitted VOD needing format or output-path control: yt-dlp is the most direct general-purpose command-line option supported by the documentation reviewed here.
- Watching a supported stream through a player: Streamlink can pipe supported services’ streams to a player such as VLC. Its official overview is not a dedicated VOD library-management workflow.
Only download or export material when you have the rights and platform permission to do so. A creator’s access to a replay does not by itself settle the rights for every component in it, particularly music.
Use Twitch’s built-in option for a Past Broadcast
Twitch calls recordings of past streams Past Broadcasts. The broadcaster needs to enable Past Broadcast storage for recordings to be available. Twitch describes a video menu option to download a video or export it to YouTube; availability depends on the broadcast being stored and accessible to the account.

See Twitch’s guidance on Video on Demand for the platform workflow. Once downloaded, the VOD is a local file, so choose a folder and storage capacity suited to its duration and quality.
Check YouTube’s archive availability and rights
YouTube does not guarantee that every livestream will have a replay. Its terms say a channel “may be provided with the option of archiving” live content for later viewing. Confirm that the replay exists and that you can access it before choosing a downloader.

YouTube’s live-stream terms also require content providers to have necessary rights for the content they stream, including music licensing rights. Saving a copy does not grant permission to keep, reuse, or redistribute material that you do not have rights to use. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and follow any applicable platform restrictions.
Use yt-dlp when you need command-line format and file control
yt-dlp is a feature-rich audio/video downloader. Its documentation covers selecting formats, setting an output path, and using FFmpeg to merge separate video and audio streams. The formats it can offer depend on the information exposed by the particular site extractor; do not assume every replay has the same downloadable formats.

- Check that the VOD is available to you and that downloading it is permitted. A downloader cannot make an unavailable or unauthorized replay available.
- Choose a destination folder. yt-dlp supports specifying an output location. Pick a drive with enough free capacity for the recording and any other files you retain.
- Inspect the formats the extractor exposes. Use yt-dlp’s format-selection controls to choose from the available formats for that video, rather than assuming a particular resolution or file type is available.
- Account for separate audio and video streams. If the selected formats are separate, FFmpeg may be needed to merge them into a single output file. Follow yt-dlp’s documentation for current format selection and output options: yt-dlp documentation.
- Verify the saved file. Open it locally and check that both picture and sound are present before deleting or losing access to the original replay.
Use Streamlink for a supported player workflow
Streamlink’s official documentation describes piping streams from supported services into a video player such as VLC. Its overview lists Twitch and YouTube support, and its quickstart explains stream-quality selection. This makes it useful when the goal is to play or extract a supported stream through a player; the documentation does not position it as a dedicated archived-VOD library manager.

Plan storage for a growing archive
A downloaded VOD moves the storage decision to your own device or external drive. Required capacity depends on recording duration, the selected quality and format, and how long you intend to retain the archive. The platform guidance and downloader documentation cited here do not establish one universal file size, so check the actual output and keep adequate free space.
External storage is optional, not a requirement. It can make sense if your archive grows beyond the space you want to allocate on your computer; choose capacity based on the videos you plan to keep rather than a generic per-hour estimate.

Common reasons a replay cannot be downloaded
- No replay appears: The platform may not have stored or archived the broadcast, or the replay may no longer be available. Check the creator’s archive settings and the platform’s own VOD page.
- The video is inaccessible: Confirm you are signed into an account with access and that the replay is available to you. A tool cannot bypass platform availability or permissions.
- The expected format is missing: Available formats depend on what the site and its extractor expose. Inspect the formats yt-dlp reports and select among those available.
- The output has no sound or is split: The chosen video and audio may be separate streams. Use the documented FFmpeg merge workflow where needed.
- The local file cannot be saved: Check the output path and available disk space, then choose a writable destination with room for the recording.
- You need chat or subtitles too: The documentation covered here does not establish a current comparison of chat-export or side-data support across these options. Check the platform’s current features and each tool’s documentation before relying on a particular sidecar export.
