One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor many Stratocaster players, .009–.042 (9–42) is a sensible starting point: Fender lists that gauge on its current Standard and Affinity Stratocaster specifications. If you prefer a firmer feel, compare it with .010–.046 (10–46), another common electric-guitar set named by Fender. Neither is universally best; your preference, tuning, playing style, and the guitar’s setup matter.
Which string gauge should you choose?
Start with 9–42 if you want a lighter-feeling set, or try 10–46 if you prefer a firmer feel. Fender recommends lighter strings for beginners and identifies both gauges as common choices, but its guidance does not provide a controlled comparison of their feel or tension. Gauge alone cannot establish which set will sound or play better for you.
Fender lists .009–.042 nickel-plated steel strings on its current Standard Stratocaster and Affinity Series Stratocaster specifications. Those examples make 9–42 a well-supported starting reference, not a rule for every Strat. Fender’s beginner guidance also names .010–.046 as a common electric-guitar set.
9–42 and 10–46 compared
| Consideration | 9–42 (.009–.042) | 10–46 (.010–.046) |

| What Fender’s sources establish | Listed on current Standard and Affinity Stratocaster specifications. | Named as a common electric-guitar set; also offered as a gauge variant on Fender’s bullet-end string product page. |
| Who might prefer it | A player looking for a lighter-feeling starting point. | A player who prefers a firmer feel. |
| Setup and intonation | Check the setup and intonation after restringing. | A gauge change may call for setup adjustment; check intonation after restringing. |
The preference descriptions are practical starting points, not measured rankings. Fender’s sources do not quantify the tension difference between these sets on a Stratocaster or establish that either provides superior tone, tuning stability, or playability. Model specifications also do not prove that every Stratocaster leaves the factory with the same gauge.

What changes when you switch gauges?
A different gauge can affect how the strings feel and how the instrument behaves, so do not assume the existing setup will suit a new set. Fender says its Stratocaster setup specifications are based on the strings supplied as standard and that changing gauge may require adjustments. It also describes the specifications as guides rather than hard rules, since playing style and individual requirements differ. Read Fender’s Stratocaster setup guidance before making adjustments.
After restringing, tune the guitar and check its intonation. Fender advises checking and adjusting intonation as needed after each string change because gauge differences and manufacturing variations can affect the vibrating string length needed for the instrument to play in tune with itself. Its intonation instructions explain the procedure.

Does a Strat need bullet-end strings?
No universal requirement is established by Fender’s product information. Fender describes its bullet-end strings as designed to fit the bridge-block channel on its Stratocaster-style tremolo system and support tremolo travel. That is the manufacturer’s design claim, not independent evidence that bullet ends are required or outperform other string ends on every Strat. Fender lists both 9–42 and 10–46 variants on its UltraCore Bullets 4250 product page; the page showed the product as sold out when retrieved on October 8, 2026.

Fender lists a feeler-gauge set, small ruler, light machine oil, Phillips screwdriver, electronic tuner, wire cutters, and peg winder among the tools used in its Stratocaster setup guidance. If you are not comfortable doing the work, or a truss-rod adjustment meets excessive resistance, has no effect, or requires constant readjustment, Fender recommends consulting an authorized dealer or service professional.
