Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a remote interview, choose software that records each participant locally and saves separate tracks. That gives you more control in editing than a single mixed call recording. Riverside is a strong fit for separate audio and video tracks; Zencastr suits audio-only and audio/video workflows; StreamYard combines recording with a live-production studio; and Zoom can work for a familiar, simple interview when separate participant audio is enough. The right choice depends on what you need to publish: an audio episode, a video interview, or a live show.
How to choose recording software
Start with the files you need after the conversation, not just how easy it is to start a call. A recording of the live call is not the same as separate source recordings from each participant. With separate tracks, you can adjust one speaker’s audio or video without changing everyone else’s. Local capture can also preserve source media when the live connection has problems, but it does not eliminate the need for a usable connection or a successful upload.
- Audio-only episode: Confirm the service records separate participant audio tracks, supports your guests’ devices, and handles uploads reliably.
- Video interview: Check that it saves separate video as well as audio for each person, and confirm supported quality and participant limits.
- Live talk show: Look for a live-production studio and verify whether local participant recording is available in the specific mode you plan to use.
- Frequent or long sessions: Check recording-time allowances, storage, participant caps, and how guests retrieve or upload files.
- Simple meeting: A familiar meeting app may be sufficient if its recording and editing workflow matches what you need.
Best software by workflow
| Software | Best fit | What the vendor documents | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Riverside | Remote video interviews where separate audio and video tracks matter | Its official podcast page describes up to eight participants, separate audio and video tracks, 48 kHz WAV audio, video up to 4K, and progressive upload. Riverside’s podcast page | These are vendor-published specifications, not a comparative quality test. Confirm the current participant allowance and features for the plan you intend to use. |
| Zencastr | Audio-only interviews or sessions that may include video | Its FAQ describes separate participant tracks, unlimited recording duration, and up to six total participants including the host. It lists desktop Chrome, Edge, and Brave, plus iOS support. Its mode page describes audio/video, audio with live video but audio-only recording, and audio-only options. Zencastr FAQ; recording modes | Participant, browser, and plan details can change. Check the current mode and supported device before inviting guests. |
| StreamYard | Talk shows that need recording alongside live production | Its help and product pages describe browser-based guest links, local participant recordings, separate audio and video files, and live-production use. The help page says free local recording is limited to two hours per month and paid plans include unlimited local recording. StreamYard local recording help; StreamYard | Distinguish local-recording allowances from allowances for recordings of live streams; confirm what applies to your chosen mode and plan. |
| Zoom | A familiar, meeting-oriented workflow or a straightforward audio interview | Zoom’s desktop app supports local computer recording and a setting to create a separate audio file for each participant. Zoom local recording instructions | The cited support instructions establish separate audio files, not separate local video files for each participant. Confirm that limitation fits your editing workflow. |
These options are workflow matches based on vendor documentation, not hands-on test rankings. Features and plan limits may change; confirm the current details before you commit to a recurring show.
Which option fits your show?
Audio-only remote interviews
Zencastr explicitly offers audio-only recording, while Zoom can create separate participant audio files when its relevant desktop setting is enabled. Choose based on guest setup, upload workflow, participant needs, and whether you want a dedicated recording experience or a familiar meeting.
#1 Best Overall

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Video interviews and video podcasts
Prioritize separate participant video as well as audio if you expect to edit camera angles, remove a participant’s shot, or make individual adjustments. Riverside documents separate video tracks and video up to 4K. StreamYard documents separate local audio and video files per participant. Verify current settings and plan details for the session type you will use.
Talk shows that go live
StreamYard is the clearest fit among these options when you want a live-production studio as well as local participant recordings. Check that local recording is enabled for your specific live or recording mode; the recording allowance and live-stream recording allowance are not necessarily the same.

Long episodes or a frequent schedule
Compare the actual recording limits and the practical work around each recording: participant caps, storage, file access, and upload completion. Zencastr’s FAQ states unlimited recording duration and up to six participants including the host. StreamYard’s help page states two free local-recording hours per month and unlimited local recording on paid plans. These are vendor-published allowances, so recheck them when choosing a plan.
A familiar, low-friction meeting
Zoom may be sufficient for a basic interview when separate participant audio files are enough and your editor is comfortable with a meeting-oriented workflow. Enable local recording and the separate-audio-files setting in the desktop app before the conversation; do not assume that an audio setting also creates separate video files.

Prepare guests for a cleaner recording
Software cannot guarantee clean source audio. Give guests a short setup checklist before the interview so they can test their equipment and connection.
- Use headphones to help reduce echo and audio bleed; Zencastr recommends them for this purpose. Zencastr FAQ
- Use a microphone per speaker where possible. StreamYard’s setup guide suggests a USB microphone when available. This is general setup guidance, not a tested gear ranking. StreamYard microphone guide
- Select the intended microphone in the recording app rather than assuming it has chosen the right input.
- Record in a quiet room and avoid moving or handling the microphone during the conversation.
- Allow time after the interview for uploads to finish, then confirm the files are available before ending the session or deleting local copies.
Before you start recording
- Decide the deliverable: audio-only, video with separate participant files, or a live-produced show with recordings.
- Check guest compatibility: confirm each guest has a supported browser or device, can open the invite, and has selected the right microphone and camera.
- Set the recording mode: choose separate participant tracks if independent editing is important. In Zoom, use the desktop app and enable local recording with separate audio files per participant before the session.
- Test the complete path: make a short test recording, wait for any uploads, and verify that the files you expect are present and usable.
- Protect the session time: confirm participant caps and any monthly recording allowance, especially for frequent shows or longer episodes.
