Choose OBS if you want to encode a LinkedIn Live event yourself using its RTMP/RTMPS stream URL and key. Choose Restream if you prefer LinkedIn’s documented partner workflow for connecting a scheduled event in Restream Studio. Neither route is inherently better for picture quality, latency, or reliability based on the available platform guidance; decide by setup style and the features you need.
What OBS and Restream do for LinkedIn Live
LinkedIn Live requires an eligible member or Page to use a streaming tool; it does not offer direct broadcasting from LinkedIn itself. LinkedIn identifies OBS as an example of an encoder for advanced broadcasters and professional producers, and lists Restream among its preferred partners. The two tools therefore fit different workflows rather than representing a quality ranking. LinkedIn Live overview
One important timing change is in effect: since June 22, 2026, spontaneous live broadcasting is no longer available. Schedule a LinkedIn Live event first. LinkedIn says scheduling minutes before a broadcast can still work for short-notice streams, but an unscheduled live is not an option.
OBS vs. Restream at a glance
| Decision point | OBS custom RTMP/RTMPS | Restream partner workflow |
|---|---|---|
| How it connects | Enter the event-specific LinkedIn Stream URL and Stream Key in OBS. | Link LinkedIn in Restream Studio, then connect an existing scheduled LinkedIn event. |
| Best fit | Producers comfortable configuring an encoder and managing its stream settings. | Broadcasters who want to connect their LinkedIn account and select the event through a partner workflow. |
| Event requirement | Schedule the event and use its ingest details in the encoder. | Schedule the event in LinkedIn, then select it in Restream Studio. |
| Feature availability | Varies by tool and workflow; confirm the feature you need. | LinkedIn lists preferred-partner features, but check current Restream documentation for specific behavior. |
| Simulcasting | LinkedIn says some third-party tools allow broadcasting to LinkedIn and another platform; confirm the current OBS setup and destinations. | Some third-party tools support simulcasting, but LinkedIn’s FAQ does not identify which ones. Check Restream’s current support and plan terms. |
LinkedIn’s documentation establishes that both workflows are supported; it does not provide comparative measurements for image quality, latency, or stream reliability. Feature behavior and interfaces can change, so verify current support for any production requirement that matters to you.

Before you start: eligibility and event timing
- Confirm that your Profile or Page meets LinkedIn Live eligibility criteria and that you have the necessary Page permissions. LinkedIn’s custom stream instructions direct broadcasters to review access criteria.
- Create a scheduled LinkedIn Live event. Since June 22, 2026, spontaneous broadcasts are not available; LinkedIn’s overview says an event can be scheduled minutes ahead for a short-notice stream.
- Decide whether you want to configure a separate encoder (OBS) or connect the event through Restream Studio.
- Plan to test the stream preview before going live and assign someone to monitor comments if possible.
Set up OBS with LinkedIn Live
- Schedule the LinkedIn event. In LinkedIn Live Studio, prepare the scheduled event and open Manage streams to find its Stream URL and Stream Key. These credentials are event-specific; use the ones for the event you intend to broadcast. Follow LinkedIn’s current custom-stream instructions.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose the custom RTMP service option, then enter LinkedIn’s Stream URL as the server and the event’s Stream Key in the key field. OBS interface labels can vary by version.
- Check the encoder output. Use LinkedIn’s current encoder guidance for video and audio settings rather than guessing at a bitrate or resolution. If LinkedIn fails to process the stream, its troubleshooting advice is to try the Baseline video profile instead of High or Main; higher profiles can introduce B-frames and timestamp problems. LinkedIn troubleshooting guidance
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS so LinkedIn receives the signal, then check the event preview in Live Studio. Starting the encoder does not itself publish the event to its audience.
- Go live in LinkedIn. When the preview is ready and you are within the event’s allowed window, use LinkedIn’s Go live control. Keep the OBS session running while broadcasting.
- Monitor the event. Use a second device or browser to watch the live output and comments while the encoder runs. LinkedIn recommends dedicating at least one person to moderation.
Custom-stream preparation and preview windows
LinkedIn’s documented custom-stream workflow gives verified Pages up to two hours to prepare and preview before an event. Unverified Profiles and Pages may prepare for one hour and have a 10-minute preview. These are windows stated for that workflow, not universal guarantees; check the event’s current Live Studio instructions.
Connect a scheduled event in Restream Studio
- Create or open a stream in Restream Studio.
- Enable the LinkedIn Page or Profile as a destination and connect your LinkedIn account when prompted.
- Choose the existing scheduled LinkedIn event you want to broadcast to, then save the connection.
- Start the broadcast when ready. LinkedIn recommends not initiating the Restream connection more than 10 minutes before the event; use Restream’s current interface and LinkedIn’s event preview as your guide.
These steps follow LinkedIn’s documented Restream connection workflow. Because Restream’s interface is controlled by a third party and may change, confirm its current prompts and event-selection behavior before a production broadcast.

Settings, destinations, and production checks
Encoder settings and stream processing
LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance calls out encoder settings as a possible cause when a stream will not process. If the signal reaches LinkedIn but processing fails, try the Baseline video profile rather than High or Main. Do not assume settings from another platform are automatically appropriate for LinkedIn; consult its current encoder guidance and verify the preview before the event.
Destinations, features, and captions
LinkedIn says a stream can select only one LinkedIn destination at a time. Some third-party tools may also send a stream to another platform, but confirm that the chosen tool supports the exact destinations and features you need. LinkedIn says feature availability varies by tool. It currently describes automatically generated real-time captions as available for livestreams created through API partners with English audio; check the tool and language limits rather than assuming captions are available in every setup. Duration and audience planning
LinkedIn’s FAQ says a livestream may last up to four hours and recommends at least 10 minutes to gain an audience. A separate, older content guideline recommends at least 15 minutes, so treat those figures as platform guidance rather than a hard technical minimum. The FAQ also advises monitoring viewers and comments on a separate device or browser, and says organizers can download the event recording after it ends. LinkedIn Live FAQ LinkedIn content guidelines
Troubleshoot common LinkedIn Live problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Live option or event access is unavailable | Check Profile or Page eligibility and confirm your account has the required Page permissions. |
| LinkedIn receives no signal | Recheck the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key, confirm they were entered in the encoder’s server and key fields, and review LinkedIn’s network-port and encoder-setting guidance. |
| The stream reaches LinkedIn but will not process | Try the Baseline video profile instead of High or Main, which LinkedIn says may cause B-frame and timestamp problems. |
| The preview works but the audience cannot see the broadcast | Starting OBS or connecting Restream is not the same as publishing from LinkedIn. Confirm the event preview, then use LinkedIn’s Go live control at the scheduled event. |
| The wrong event is connected in Restream | Return to the Restream Studio destination and event selection, choose the intended existing scheduled event, and save before going live. |
| A feature or destination is missing | Check whether the selected tool supports it and whether LinkedIn permits the requested destination or feature in that workflow. LinkedIn allows only one LinkedIn destination per stream. |
