OpenSubtitles is the best first stop for most movies, with SubDL as the strongest alternative and Podnapisi.NET as a useful multilingual backup. For television episodes, Addic7ed is usually more appropriate. The right file still depends on the movie’s cut, release, frame rate, language and subtitle format. These services offer free access or free tiers; that does not automatically mean every uploaded subtitle is authorized or legally unrestricted.

Quick comparison

Service Best for Movie or TV focus Account and limits Formats and matching Main drawback
OpenSubtitles General-purpose movie searches and player integrations Movies and TV Free access and account, quota or API conditions can change Large multilingual selection; compare release labels carefully Many versions can differ in timing and quality
SubDL Metadata-rich searches and multilingual alternatives Movies and TV Basic access is available; API or premium conditions may apply Search by title, filename, IMDb or TMDB ID, year, language and episode details User uploads may be inaccurate, unsafe, incomplete or legally restricted
Addic7ed Actively translated television episodes Primarily TV Registration increases the stated allowance to 35 files per 24 hours Episode, season and translation-team browsing Not the best default for ordinary movie searches
Podnapisi.NET International and less common language searches Movies and TV Availability and results vary by title Useful multilingual catalog; verify each release Results are inconsistent for some titles
Plex or Kodi search Finding subtitles without leaving a media center Depends on your library Client, server, provider and account requirements vary Metadata-assisted results during playback Fewer provider and file-selection controls than manual searches

Use the platform’s own subtitle selector first when watching a commercial streaming service. Manual sites are most useful for legally stored local files, purchased or disc-derived media, older editions, missing language tracks and accessibility variants.

Which site should you try first?

For a mainstream movie in English

Search OpenSubtitles first, then compare SubDL and Podnapisi.NET if the result is mistimed or belongs to a different release.

For a foreign-language movie

Try the original-language title as well as the translated title on OpenSubtitles, SubDL and Podnapisi.NET. Set the target language explicitly and check regional variants such as Brazilian Portuguese or Latin American Spanish.

For a TV episode

Start with Addic7ed when the show has an active translation community. OpenSubtitles and SubDL are useful backups for older, less popular or differently edited episodes.

For Plex or Kodi

Plex’s subtitle-search feature currently uses OpenSubtitles.com. Its documented minimum Plex Media Server version is 1.13.8.5395, but available menus depend on the server and client; the support page was last modified in December 2023. In Kodi, search from full-screen playback after configuring a subtitle provider. See Plex’s subtitle-search documentation and Kodi’s subtitle documentation.

How to choose the correct subtitle file

Do not download the first result with the right title. A subtitle made for a theatrical cut can be wrong for an extended edition even when both files have the same name.

  1. Identify your video. Note the exact title, year, runtime, resolution, source, edition and release-group information in the filename.
  2. Search with precise metadata. Use the original title, year and, where supported, an IMDb or TMDB identifier. SubDL documents searches by film name, filename, IMDb ID, TMDB ID, season, episode, type, year and language.
  3. Match the edition. Look for theatrical, extended, director’s cut, unrated, remastered, Blu-ray, DVD, WEB-DL, WEBRip or HDTV labels that correspond to your video.
  4. Match the release and timing. Compare release group, runtime and frame rate. Common rates include 23.976, 24, 25 and 29.97 frames per second.
  5. Choose the language and accessibility type. Select SDH or HI when you need speaker identification, music cues and other sound descriptions. Forced subtitles normally cover only dialogue or text that must be understood.
  6. Review quality signals. Prefer entries with uploader notes, ratings, comments, version labels and a download history that indicate a file tailored to the release.

A common naming pattern is:

Movie.Title.2025.1080p.WEB-DL.x264.mkv
Movie.Title.2025.1080p.WEB-DL.x264.en.srt

Placing the subtitle beside the video with the same base filename often enables automatic loading, although each player and device can impose different naming rules.

Subtitle formats explained

Format Best use Compatibility Limitation
SRT Plain dialogue subtitles Broadest support Little styling or positioning
WebVTT/VTT Web video and modern apps Good in browsers and selected players Some TVs and hardware players reject it
ASS/SSA Styled, positioned or karaoke subtitles Strong in desktop players such as VLC Basic TVs may discard styling
SUB/IDX DVD-derived image subtitles Useful when both paired files are present Not editable like text
SUP/PGS Blu-ray image subtitles Preserves disc appearance Less convenient for conversion and external playback

Kodi documents support for text formats including SRT, ASS/SSA and WebVTT, as well as image-based VobSub files. Your television, container format and USB filesystem may support fewer formats.

Download and inspect a subtitle safely

  1. Use the service’s real HTTPS domain and avoid sponsored results that imitate it.
  2. Download the subtitle archive only; do not follow redirects offering a movie, torrent, codec, browser extension or “subtitle player.”
  3. Extract ZIP or RAR files locally when necessary.
  4. Inspect the contents. Expected files include .srt, .vtt, .ass, .ssa or a matching .sub and .idx pair.
  5. Delete anything unexpected, especially .exe, .scr, .bat, .cmd, .js or misleading double extensions.
  6. Scan archives with current security software and keep your operating system, player and media server updated.

Subtitle files are not automatically harmless. Security research has documented malicious subtitle files being used against vulnerable media players and streaming software; see Hacked in Translation—From Subtitles to Complete Takeover. Never treat “text file” as a guarantee of safety.

Load subtitles in common players

VLC

  1. Open the movie in VLC.
  2. Open the playback menu’s Subtitle or Subtitle Track controls.
  3. Choose Add Subtitle File, or the equivalent external-file command in your release.
  4. Select the subtitle and test it at dialogue, scene changes and the ending.

Download VLC from VideoLAN’s official site. The optional VLSub OpenSubtitles.com extension documents integrated searching, filename language tags such as movie.en.srt and account or quota handling; it is not included in every VLC installation.

Plex

  1. Open the movie or episode.
  2. Open the subtitle selector before or during playback.
  3. Choose More… to open subtitle search.
  4. Select a language, choose a result and verify synchronization.

Plex client support and menu labels vary by platform, so confirm the current behavior for your server and app.

Kodi

  1. Start playback and open the on-screen display.
  2. Open the audio or subtitle options.
  3. Select the subtitle-search control.
  4. Choose a language and provider result, then test it.

Kodi also lets you turn subtitles off or save subtitle preferences as defaults.

Smart TVs and mobile players

Use the player’s external-subtitle command or place a same-base-name file beside the video on the supported storage. If the device rejects SRT, try its documented format, encoding and filename rules rather than installing an unknown codec pack.

Fix subtitles that are early, late or drifting

Constant offset

If every line is early or late by roughly the same amount, use the player’s subtitle-delay control for a temporary correction. For a permanent fix, shift timestamps in a subtitle editor and save a new copy without overwriting the original.

Progressive drift

When synchronization starts correctly but gets increasingly worse, the subtitle and video probably use different frame rates or one file has variable-frame-rate timing. Find a frame-rate-specific release first; if none exists, rescale timestamps in a subtitle editor.

Wrong cut or opening sequence

Compare the first scene, logos, runtime and credits. An extended, director’s or remastered edition needs a subtitle made for that exact version.

Only a few lines are wrong

Edit those timestamps rather than resynchronizing the entire file. Keep the untouched download as a fallback.

Encoding, language and accessibility problems

Incorrect characters

Open the file as UTF-8 in a subtitle editor. If it uses a legacy encoding, convert it to UTF-8 and save a corrected copy. For Arabic, Hebrew, Thai, Chinese, Japanese or Korean, check both script direction and the player’s available fonts.

Missing sound descriptions

Replace an ordinary dialogue subtitle with an SDH or HI version. Those labels indicate captions intended to include relevant sounds and speaker information.

No result for the title

  • Try the original and translated titles, alternate punctuation and spelling.
  • Add the year or an IMDb/TMDB identifier.
  • Check whether the item is indexed as a movie, episode or special.
  • Try another provider or the player’s integrated search.
  • Look for the subtitle track supplied with the legally obtained disc, download or service.

Free does not always mean legal

A subtitle is separate from the movie, but its translation or captioning can still contain copyrighted expression. The U.S. Copyright Office treats translations and subtitled motion pictures as derivative works, and copyright owners generally control authorization of derivative works. See Title 17, Chapter 1 and What Is Copyright?.

The legal status of an individual upload depends on who created it, whether it was authorized and the law where you live. “Free to access” is not the same as public domain, and fair-use questions are fact-specific; the Copyright Office discusses this in its Fair Use FAQ. Use subtitles with movies you are entitled to watch and prefer tracks supplied by the rights holder, disc publisher, streaming service or authorized distributor when available. SubDL’s terms also warn that uploads may be inaccurate, unsafe, incomplete or legally restricted and state that the service does not provide movies, torrents, streaming links or video files.

Automation for home-media libraries

Manual downloading is simplest for occasional use. Plex and Kodi offer integrated searches, while tools such as Bazarr can automate downloads for compatible home-media servers. Automation usually requires provider accounts, API keys and careful release matching; it is not a guarantee that the first downloaded file is correct. SubDL documents a free API-key route and integrations in its API documentation.

For permanent timing, encoding or translation repairs, Subtitle Edit is a free, open-source option. Confirm current operating-system support and release details on its project page.

Sites and claims to treat cautiously

Do not rely on old “top 10” lists that repeat unsupported catalog counts or call every service virus-free. Subscene appears in many older guides; SubDL’s current alternative page says it shut down in May 2024, so it should not be presented as a current recommendation without independently verified availability. Likewise, a subtitle site associated with a YIFY/YTS release name does not supply or authorize the movie itself. Use such a source only when the release name exactly matches and the domain is verified.

The Bottom Line

Start with OpenSubtitles, switch to SubDL or Podnapisi.NET when the release or language does not match, and use Addic7ed mainly for TV. The safest successful download is the one that matches your exact cut and frame rate, survives a quick file inspection and is loaded into an updated player.
