The best Silent Hill game depends on what you want: psychological storytelling, a modernized remake, a Japanese setting, or intense body horror.

For psychological horror and story, start with the original Silent Hill 2 (2001). If you would rather play a modernized version on current platforms, choose Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024). Silent Hill f (2025) offers a new Japanese setting, while Silent Hill 3 (2003) is the pick for oppressive atmosphere and body horror. These are four strong recommendations, not an objective measure of which game is best for every player.

Best Silent Hill games at a glance

Game Best for What distinguishes it
Silent Hill 2 (2001) Psychological horror and an intimate story James Sunderland’s story and monsters with symbolic significance.
Silent Hill 2 Remake (2024) Newcomers who want a modernized version A full remake that updates presentation and gameplay while aiming to retain the original’s atmosphere.
Silent Hill f (2025) A newer story in a different setting A 1960s Japanese setting, protagonist Hinako Shimizu, and multiple endings.
Silent Hill 3 (2003) Body horror and oppressive atmosphere A grotesque Otherworld and direct engagement with fertility and childbirth.

This shortlist follows GamesRadar+’s ranking, which places these games in the order shown above. That is one publication’s editorial judgment, not a consensus ranking or a measure of objective quality. The best choice depends on whether you value story, atmosphere, a newer presentation, or a particular kind of horror.

Which Silent Hill game should you play first?

Choose the original Silent Hill 2 for psychological horror

The 2001 Silent Hill 2 is the strongest starting recommendation if you want a story-led experience. It centers on James Sunderland, and its monsters contribute to the story’s psychological and symbolic dimension. Its age is part of the decision: choose it if you are comfortable with an older game rather than assuming the remake makes the original redundant.

Choose Silent Hill 2 Remake for a current-platform version

Konami describes the 2024 release as a full remake of the PlayStation 2 original from 2001. It is a separate entry, not a replacement that erases the original’s distinct place in the series. The remake updates the presentation and gameplay; Bloober Team creative director and lead designer Mateusz Lenart said the team aimed to preserve the original’s atmosphere while modernizing gameplay. The developer also described adopting an over-the-shoulder camera and rebuilding combat around that perspective.

Konami lists the remake for PlayStation 5 and PC storefronts including Steam, Epic Games, and GOG; its support information also lists Xbox Series X|S. Check the specific storefront and your region before making a purchase, since availability can vary.

Choose Silent Hill f for a different setting

Released on September 25, 2025, Silent Hill f is set in 1960s Japan and follows Hinako Shimizu. Konami identifies it as the series’ first psychological horror game set in Japan. Its setting and multiple endings make it the most distinct option in this shortlist for someone seeking a newer story rather than another version of the 2001 game.

Konami lists Silent Hill f for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games, and the Microsoft Store. Confirm regional storefront availability before buying.

Choose Silent Hill 3 for intense body horror

Silent Hill 3 (2003) is the pick if you want the series at its most oppressive and grotesque. Its Otherworld and creatures are central to its appeal, and its treatment of fertility and childbirth gives its horror a specific thematic focus. It is a better fit for players seeking body horror than for someone whose main priority is a modernized presentation.

How the newer games compare in reach

Player and shipment totals indicate reach, not quality, and Konami reports different metrics for the two games below. As of April 22, 2026, the publisher reported Silent Hill f had reached 2 million worldwide cumulative shipments, including physical and digital sales. As of April 24, 2026, it reported 6 million cumulative Silent Hill 2 players, counting units shipped, store downloads, and subscription services. Because one figure counts shipments and the other combines several kinds of access, they are not directly comparable.

Konami also reported that Silent Hill f received three Famitsu Dengeki Game Awards 2025 awards, including fan-voted Game of the Year, and four IGN Japan Game of the Year 2025 awards. Those recognitions may help explain the game’s visibility, but they do not settle which entry a particular player will prefer.

How to decide between them

  • Story first: Start with the original Silent Hill 2 if you want the acclaimed psychological horror story and are willing to play an older release.
  • Modern presentation: Pick Silent Hill 2 Remake if you want a rebuilt version and have access to one of its listed platforms.
  • Different setting and a newer release: Pick Silent Hill f for Hinako’s story in 1960s Japan and its multiple endings.
  • Body horror: Pick Silent Hill 3 for its grotesque creatures, oppressive Otherworld, and themes of fertility and childbirth.

For the original-era games, confirm that you can access the version and platform you want before settling on a starting point; current availability routes for the older original titles are not established here. If platform convenience matters most, the remake and Silent Hill f have multiple current platform options listed by Konami.
