For a genre-led July 2024 watchlist, MGM+’s slate offered five distinct choices: FROM for sci-fi horror, Godfather of Harlem for period crime drama, Billy the Kid for a western, Hotel Cocaine for a crime thriller, and the new literary drama Emperor of Ocean Park. This is a dated U.S. snapshot, not a claim about what MGM+ carries today, and the available slate information does not establish an objective ranking.
Which MGM+ show should you watch?
Choose by genre and premise rather than treating “best” as a measured ranking. MGM+’s Q3 2024 slate listed all five titles below, but did not rank them by audience size, reviews, or popularity.
- Sci-fi horror and a continuing mystery: FROM
- Crime drama set in 1960s Harlem: Godfather of Harlem
- Western and historical adventure: Billy the Kid
- Crime thriller: Hotel Cocaine
- A new drama adapted from a novel: Emperor of Ocean Park
Best MGM+ shows by what you want to watch
FROM: sci-fi horror built around a trapped town
MGM+ describes a nightmarish town that traps people who enter; its Q3 2024 slate categorizes the series as sci-fi and horror. Pick it if you want an unsettling premise and a sustained mystery rather than a historical setting. The premise is also summarized in Amazon’s announcement about MGM+.
Godfather of Harlem: a period crime drama
The series follows Bumpy Johnson’s return to 1960s Harlem. MGM+’s Q3 2024 job aid places it in the drama category. It is the clearest choice on this list if you want a crime story rooted in a specific historical period and place.

Billy the Kid: a western with historical conflict
MGM+’s Q3 slate labels Billy the Kid a western and historical drama. Amazon’s announcement describes the second season’s conflict around the Lincoln County War. Choose it for a western setting and historical adventure rather than a contemporary crime story.
Hotel Cocaine: a crime thriller
The Q3 2024 MGM+ slate categorizes Hotel Cocaine as a crime thriller. TVLine’s July 14, 2024 schedule listed it at 9 p.m. ET on MGM+. The cited schedule establishes its place on that date’s lineup; it does not, by itself, establish its current availability.

Emperor of Ocean Park: a literary drama and July premiere
Emperor of Ocean Park premiered on MGM+ on July 14, 2024. It adapts Stephen L. Carter’s bestselling novel, with a story set amid academia, politics, and Martha’s Vineyard, according to TIME’s May 23, 2024 preview. It is the pick for viewers looking for a new drama with a literary source rather than an established genre series.
What was scheduled for Emperor of Ocean Park in July?
TV Guide and TIME both listed July 14, 2024, as the MGM+ premiere date. TVLine’s July 14 schedule placed the series premiere at 10 p.m. ET. Rotten Tomatoes’ July streaming calendar later listed Chapter Two for July 21 and Chapter Three for July 26. Those entries confirm the first three listed chapter dates only; they do not establish the complete release cadence.
