For most PC Twitch streamers, start with OBS Studio. It is free, open source, and lets you record locally while controlling recording quality, format, encoder, and audio tracks. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you want an integrated interface and the option to record a different set of sources from the ones viewers see live. If your gameplay is on a console and you want to capture it on a computer, you may also need a compatible capture card.

Choose based on what you need to record

“Screen recording” can mean capturing a PC game while you stream, saving a local copy of the broadcast, or creating an edited version with a different mix of sources. The right choice depends on the footage and workflow—not on a universal performance ranking. The available official information does not establish a controlled winner for system load, recording quality, or setup time.

  • PC game or desktop: OBS Studio is the best starting point for flexible, no-fee local recording.
  • Integrated overlays and stream tools: Consider Streamlabs Desktop, especially if you want selective recording.
  • Console gameplay captured on a computer: Check whether your setup needs a compatible capture card, and verify support for your console, computer, resolution, and frame rate.

Twitch’s Support guide describes local recording as a way to keep a high-quality copy and backup of a broadcast. It also explains that recording settings such as quality and format affect the result and file size. Read Twitch’s local-recording guide.

OBS Studio: best starting point for most PC streamers

OBS Studio is free and open source. Its scenes can combine sources such as windows, webcams, images, browser windows, and capture cards, making it useful both for recording and for building a Twitch broadcast. OBS’s official download page lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux; it reported version 32.2.2 dated August 14, 2026. Check the current page for changes before installing: OBS Studio.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a local recording

  1. Build and check your scene. In OBS, add the game or window capture you want, then add any webcam, images, or other sources. Confirm the preview shows the composition you intend to record.
  2. Open recording output settings. Use the recording controls and options described in Twitch’s OBS guide to choose a destination, file format, encoder, and quality. Available encoder choices depend on the computer and its hardware/software configuration; there is no one setting that suits every system.
  3. Choose a format with recovery in mind. Twitch recommends MKV because a crash is less likely to destroy the entire recording. If you need another format for editing or playback, use OBS’s remuxing option after recording rather than sacrificing crash resilience during capture.
  4. Decide whether you need separate audio tracks. Twitch’s instructions say OBS Advanced mode can include up to four audio tracks. Separate tracks can make it easier to edit game audio, microphone, and other audio independently, but you must deliberately route and select the tracks you need.
  5. Make a short test recording. Review the picture, microphone and game-audio balance, sync, and file location before relying on the setup for a full broadcast.

Higher local recording quality creates larger files, so check that the destination drive has enough free space for the session. Twitch’s guide covers the available quality, encoder, format, destination, and audio-track controls: Locally Recording Your Broadcasts.

Streamlabs Desktop: a useful integrated alternative

Streamlabs Desktop supports local recording alongside integrated streaming features such as overlays and widgets. Its Selective Recording feature lets you choose sources for the recorded output separately from the sources sent to the live broadcast. That is useful when, for example, your live scene includes elements you do not want in an edited video, or your recording should include a source that is not part of the live layout.

See Streamlabs’ Desktop and Console feature comparison and its Selective Recording guide for product details and setup. The available evidence does not establish that Streamlabs is faster, lighter, or higher quality than OBS in a controlled comparison.

Console gameplay: when a capture card enters the setup

Recording software alone can capture a PC game, but a console’s gameplay must reach the computer before desktop software can record it. In one documented PlayStation-to-Twitch workflow, Streamlabs describes using streaming software and a capture card. That does not mean every console or setup uses the same hardware path: check compatibility with your specific console and computer, and confirm the card supports your target resolution and frame rate.

Streamlabs’ workflow is described in its Twitch setup guide. A capture card is conditional hardware for this kind of console-to-computer workflow, not a requirement for ordinary PC gameplay recording.

Compare the options by workflow

Option Best fit Recording workflow Points to check
OBS Studio PC streamers who want flexible control without a software fee Local recording with configurable quality, destination, format, encoder, and audio tracks Encoder options depend on the computer; higher quality uses more disk space. OBS’s listed platforms are Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux on its official page.

Capture card plus computer software Some console-to-computer capture setups Routes console gameplay into a computer for use by recording or streaming software Compatibility depends on the console, computer, and target resolution/frame rate; verify before buying.

Twitch lists OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop among common broadcast applications and describes both as free on its software page. Settings that matter more than the logo

Quality and storage

Choose recording quality according to the footage you need and the space available. Higher quality produces larger files; there is no evidence here for a single bitrate or quality value that is right for every game, computer, or editing target. Make a sample recording and inspect it before committing to a long session.

Encoder and computer capacity

The encoder choices shown by OBS depend on the computer. Choose from the options actually available in your setup, then test while the game is running. A setting that records acceptably on one system may not suit another, and no controlled application benchmark is available here to justify a blanket claim that one program has lower system load.

Audio tracks

If you expect to edit the recording, separate tracks can preserve independent control of audio sources. Twitch’s OBS guide says Advanced mode can include up to four audio tracks. Track separation is useful only if you route and select the sources intentionally; otherwise, a track may not contain the audio you expect.

Troubleshoot common recording problems

  • The recording stops or is lost after a crash: Use MKV as Twitch recommends, then remux after recording if a different format is needed.
  • The recording is much larger than expected: Reduce the selected recording quality if the resulting detail is sufficient, or make sure the destination has enough free space. Higher quality means larger files.
  • A source is missing from the saved video: Check that the source is included in the recording scene or, in Streamlabs Desktop, in the Selective Recording configuration.
  • Microphone and game audio cannot be edited separately: Configure and test separate audio tracks before the session; OBS Advanced mode can include up to four according to Twitch’s guide.
  • The computer does not show the encoder you expected: Encoder availability depends on the computer. Use an available option and test it on your system rather than assuming all machines expose the same choices.
  • Console gameplay does not appear in the capture software: Confirm that the console signal reaches the computer through a compatible capture path, and check the device and target-resolution support for the whole setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different job—keeping a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube 24/7—StreamNeo is not a Twitch screen recorder. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not camera footage or Twitch broadcasts. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.

There is nothing to leave running at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing for details, then start your free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a capture card necessary for PC gameplay?

No. It is relevant when routing console gameplay into a computer; PC gameplay can be captured directly in desktop software.
