OBS Studio is the strongest starting point for Linux screen recording when you need multiple sources, composed scenes, audio controls, or the option to stream. For a quick, simple clip, compare it with Kooha or the capture tool built into your desktop. On Linux, the right choice depends partly on whether your session uses X11 or Wayland—and, with Wayland, on your desktop or compositor and the capture mode you need.

This is a feature-based recommendation, not a claim that the tools have been tested against one another. OBS describes itself as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” The OBS Project lists Linux among its supported platforms.
Why OBS Studio is the best all-round starting point
OBS is a strong fit when a recording needs more than a single screen image and microphone track. You can build scenes from multiple sources, adjust audio in its mixer, and record or stream from the same application. That makes it suitable for tutorials, presentations, gameplay, and demonstrations involving multiple inputs. Its many controls are useful for involved productions, but do not make it the obvious simplest choice for a one-off clip.
What to plan before recording
- Capture source: Decide whether you need a whole display, a window, or a selected region. Confirm that the method you choose is available in your current desktop session.
- Audio: Decide whether to capture system sound, narration, or both. A microphone is optional; silent screen capture does not require one. A USB microphone for screen recording may help with narrated tutorials, but check Linux compatibility before buying.
- Additional video: Add a webcam or capture card only if your recording needs an external video source. Both are optional.
- Scene layout: For a presentation or tutorial with screen, camera, and other inputs, arrange and check the scene before recording.
Check Linux and Wayland compatibility first
OBS lists either the X Window System or Wayland among its Linux requirements. It also warns that meeting the stated requirements does not guarantee a system can record or stream successfully. Check the OBS system requirements, then test the exact capture and audio workflow on your own machine.

Wayland is not a single uniform capture environment. Desktop and compositor differences can affect whether a tool can capture a monitor, window, or region in the way you need. Compare Wayland-oriented options and verify the precise desktop or compositor, package route, and capture mode rather than assuming that a tool works the same everywhere.
Install OBS using the guidance for your distribution
- Open the official OBS Linux installation guide.
- Find the instructions that match your Linux distribution and follow that package route. Installation details can differ by distribution.
- Launch OBS and test the source you intend to record—display, window, or region—in your actual X11 or Wayland session.
- Check the video and audio in a short recording before starting a longer capture. Confirm that the intended screen area and sound are present.
OBS’s published system requirements do not guarantee that every source, audio path, or session will work on every machine. A short local test is the practical compatibility check.

Choose a simpler tool for quick clips
If you only need a straightforward screen capture, compare Kooha and the recorder supplied by your desktop environment before taking on OBS’s broader production controls. Kooha is identified as a simpler candidate in a secondary comparison; desktop-native tools are another possibility. Check current documentation for the tool and desktop you actually use, especially on Wayland.
wf-recorder and wl-screenrec are also mentioned in Wayland-focused comparisons. They may be relevant to specialized workflows, but available comparisons do not establish universal compositor support or a complete, current feature matrix. SimpleScreenRecorder is another name found in Linux coverage; its present compatibility should likewise be checked rather than assumed.

Common problems and what to check
- The display, window, or region does not appear as a capture source: Check whether your session is X11 or Wayland, then verify support for that exact capture mode with your desktop or compositor. Try the desktop’s own recorder or a tool documented for your environment.
- OBS meets the listed requirements but recording still fails: The OBS requirements page says compatible system requirements alone do not ensure successful recording or streaming. Test the specific source and workflow you need, and consult the installation and requirements guidance for your distribution and session.
- Video records but narration or system audio is missing: Inspect the audio sources and mixer in OBS, then make a short test recording. Check that you selected the intended input and that the audio is present in the resulting file.
- A lightweight tool lacks a needed control: If the workflow requires multiple sources, scene composition, or detailed audio adjustment, try OBS; those production controls are part of its documented feature set.
