For most Chromebook users, ChromeOS Screen Capture is the best place to start: it is built in and records the full screen, a window, or a selected area without installing another recorder. For lessons or demos that need trimming and searchable transcripts, use Google Screencast if it is available on your device. Choose Loom’s Chrome extension when hosted sharing and team collaboration matter; Loom’s desktop app does not run on Chromebook OS.
Which Chromebook screen recorder should you use?
| Option | Best for | What it offers | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS Screen Capture | Quick local recordings | Full-screen, window, and partial-area capture; camera and audio settings; WebM or GIF for partial recordings. | It is a capture utility rather than a hosted editing and collaboration suite. Recordings save to Downloads by default. |
| Google Screencast | Lessons and demonstrations | Trimming, muting, title overlays, and a transcript with search, navigation, and translation. | Requires ChromeOS 104 or later; an administrator can disable it on managed devices. Sharing visibility differs for managed and personal accounts. |
| Loom Chrome extension | Browser recording with hosted sharing | Browser-based screen and camera recording, with hosted sharing and editing features advertised by Loom. | The extension is distinct from Loom’s desktop app, which is not Chromebook-compatible. Starter plan limits may apply. |
Choose based on what happens after capture: local file, edited lesson with transcript, or hosted link for collaboration. For exact recording choices and audio controls, ChromeOS Screen Capture is the simplest starting point.
How to record your Chromebook screen with ChromeOS Screen Capture
- Open Screen Capture. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. Alternatively, open Screen Capture from the shelf. In the capture toolbar, choose Screen record.
- Choose what to record. Select full screen, a window, or a partial area, then follow the on-screen prompt to start.
- Set camera and audio. Open Settings in the capture toolbar and choose the camera and audio inputs you need. The available choices depend on the device and connected equipment.
- Stop the recording. Use the stop control on the shelf, or press Search + Shift + X.
- Find and manage the file. Recordings save in Downloads by default. You can change the destination in the capture settings.
For a partial-screen capture, the documented flow offers video saved as WebM or a GIF. GIF recordings do not include audio or video input, so use WebM if narration or camera footage matters. See Google’s Chromebook screen recording instructions for the current interface.
When Google Screencast is a better fit
Screencast is a separate ChromeOS app for recordings that need light post-production or a transcript. Google says it is available on devices running ChromeOS 104 or later. If it is missing on a school- or work-managed Chromebook, the administrator may have disabled it.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Editing and transcript tools
Screencast supports trimming, muting, and title overlays. Its transcript can be searched and used to navigate a recording, and Google documents translation support. Transcript creation depends on supported device and language settings; transcription may be processed on-device or sent to Google depending on the device and language.
Sharing and privacy
For managed accounts, a shared Screencast recording is visible only to people in the managed domain who have the link. For personal accounts, recordings shared by link are visible to anyone with that link. Treat link sharing accordingly, particularly when a recording includes student, workplace, or other sensitive information. Google documents app requirements and sharing behavior in its Screencast help.

When to choose Loom’s Chrome extension
Loom’s Chrome extension is the relevant Loom option for Chromebook users; its desktop app is available for Mac and Windows and is not compatible with Chromebook OS. Atlassian’s support documentation lists extension capture choices including full screen, window, current tab, and camera-only. It also notes limitations involving camera-bubble behavior outside the browser and PDFs. Consult Atlassian’s Chromebook recording guidance for those workflow details.
Loom advertises screen and audio recording, camera recording, editing, and hosted link sharing for Chromebook users. Its pricing page currently lists Starter as free with up to 25 videos per member and a five-minute limit per screen recording; Business lists unlimited recording time. These plan terms can change, so check Loom’s current pricing page before relying on a limit. The listed capabilities are vendor claims, not independent performance tests.

Audio, camera, and sharing: practical choices
Recording a tab or just one window
ChromeOS Screen Capture offers full-screen, window, and partial-area capture. Loom’s extension documentation lists full screen, window, current tab, and camera-only modes. If you need a browser tab specifically, confirm the current option in the extension interface before recording.
Adding narration or a webcam
In ChromeOS Screen Capture, open Settings before starting and select the audio and camera inputs available on your Chromebook. A GIF is unsuitable when audio or video input is needed. Screencast is useful when the recording also needs transcript and trim tools; Loom is an alternative when a hosted recording workflow is preferable.

Choosing where the recording lives
Screen Capture saves a local file, by default in Downloads, which you can then share using a method you control. Screencast and Loom offer hosted sharing workflows, but link access is not the same for every account: Screencast managed-account links are restricted to the domain, while personal-account links are visible to anyone who has them. Check access settings before sending a link.

- The Screencast app is missing: Confirm the Chromebook runs ChromeOS 104 or later. On a school or work device, ask the administrator whether the app is disabled.
- Screencast cannot create a transcript or recording: Check whether the device language is supported and whether the device meets Screencast’s requirements. Transcription behavior varies by device and language.
- A partial recording has no sound or camera: If you saved it as a GIF, that is expected. Record as WebM and select the intended audio and camera settings before starting.
- You cannot find a Screen Capture recording: Check Downloads first. If you changed the destination in the capture settings, look in that selected folder.
- A Loom desktop installer will not work: The desktop app is not Chromebook-compatible. Use Loom’s Chrome extension instead, and consult the extension’s documentation for its browser-specific constraints.
- A shared recording is visible to the wrong audience: Review the account type and link permissions before sharing. Personal Screencast links are visible to anyone with the link; managed Screencast sharing is limited to the domain.
Or let it run in the cloud
Screen recorders capture what is happening on your Chromebook; StreamNeo is for a different job: keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on a YouTube channel 24/7. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops it in the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
