In the IMDb Top 250 Movies chart, filtered to the Sci-Fi genre, the highest verified placings in our October 2026 check are Inception (#14 overall, 8.8), Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (#15, 8.7), The Matrix (#16, 8.7), Interstellar (#17, 8.7), and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (#28, 8.6). These are five confirmed entries from a dated snapshot. We could not confirm the remaining places in a complete top 20, so this article does not present a full ranked list of twenty.

What the sci-fi filter did and did not show
The Sci-Fi genre filter on the Top 250 chart returned 32 titles from the 250-film list in that snapshot. Only five of those 32 were visible in the result we could check, so the order of the other 27 titles, including the places between #1 and #13 and between #18 and #27, is not established here. Direct access to IMDb’s live chart and advanced-search pages returned access errors during this check, so we could not verify the remaining filtered titles.
#1 Best Overall
How IMDb builds the number you see
IMDb lets registered users rate released titles from 1 to 10. The title rating shown on a page is a weighted average, not a plain arithmetic mean of every vote. IMDb says ratings are updated numerous times each day, which is why a chart position is only meaningful with a date attached.
For the Top 250 ranking, IMDb describes a Bayesian estimate. It takes into account a title’s mean rating, its number of ratings, the minimum number of ratings required for eligibility, and the mean rating across the whole report. IMDb does not disclose the exact weighting it applies to individual votes.
Rank #2
- Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk has English audio.
Eligibility rules for the Top 250 chart, as IMDb’s current FAQ states them:
- Only votes from regular IMDb users count toward the chart. IMDb does not publish the criteria it uses to define a “regular” user.
- A title must currently have at least 25,000 ratings to qualify.
- The chart includes theatrical feature films and excludes shorts, TV movies, miniseries, and documentaries.
Is the highest-rated sci-fi film really the best?
Not in any objective sense. A chart position is a summary of how a large, self-selected group of IMDb users rated films, under a weighted formula and eligibility rules. IMDb itself describes the rating as an aggregate of the “opinions of millions of IMDb users about a work of artistic expression,” and states that “opinions about the quality of movies and TV series are subjective, and the IMDb rating is no exception.”
Rank #3
The numbers in this table also make it hard to draw fine distinctions. Interstellar, The Matrix, and The Empire Strikes Back all sit at 8.7, and Inception’s 8.8 is only a tenth of a point higher. A gap that small, between films with different vote counts and different release years, does not establish that one film is better than another. Use the table to see which films the platform’s audience ranks highly, not to settle a debate about quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check the list yourself
- Open IMDb’s Top 250 Movies chart on imdb.com.
- Apply the Sci-Fi genre filter, if the page offers it, and record the date you looked at the list.
- For each film, note its chart position, its displayed rating, and the number of ratings shown on its title page.
- Compare the results with the snapshot above. If positions or ratings differ, the list has changed since this check, and your dated copy is the one to use.
If you see a title in the filtered list that is not in the table, that is expected: the table covers only the five films we could verify.
Use the chart as one signal among several. Pair it with critic reviews or a film’s own history if you want to judge whether a film works for you.
