For most remote interviews, choose a recording platform that captures a separate audio file for each participant; if your show is also video, check that it records separate video tracks too. Separate tracks make it easier to balance voices and work around cross-talk than a single mixed recording. Riverside is one option with published support for local capture and separate participant tracks, but the best choice depends on your format, guest setup and plan limits.
What matters most in remote interview recording software?
Start with the files you need to edit, not a feature checklist. A polished call is not necessarily a flexible recording: if everyone is baked into one mixed track, you have less control over individual voices in post-production.
- Separate tracks: Look for an audio track per participant; for a video show, check whether each person’s video is recorded separately as well.
- Capture and upload: Find out whether recordings depend on the live call connection or are captured on each participant’s device and uploaded afterward. Local capture is a workflow choice, not a guarantee against every failure; check what happens if a guest closes a tab or an upload is interrupted.
- Guest friction: Confirm browser or app requirements, account requirements, device compatibility, and microphone and recording permissions. A familiar meeting app may be easier for a first-time guest.
- Output and editing: Check file formats, synchronization, download access, editing features, exports and integration with your existing audio or video workflow.
- Limits and cost: Check participant caps, storage, included multitrack hours, watermarks, trial restrictions and billing intervals. Account for any separate editing or hosting subscription.
Audio-only producers may prefer a simpler guest workflow and a dedicated audio editor. Video producers should also compare individual video tracks, resolution, layouts and editing tools. Recording, editing and podcast hosting are distinct jobs; do not assume one subscription covers all three.
Remote recording options: dedicated tools or a meeting app?
Dedicated remote recording platforms
These are built around recording remote participants and delivering files for production. Riverside says its app records on each participant’s device and uploads the files, and that this approach preserves recording quality through unstable connections. That is Riverside’s explanation of its workflow, not independent reliability evidence. Before choosing any platform, check how it handles interrupted recordings and uploads.

Riverside
Riverside’s product page describes local recording, separate participant tracks, 48 kHz audio and video up to 4K. It also lists a browser app for Chrome and Edge, mobile apps, text-based editing, a speaker-colored timeline and Magic Clips. These are the platform’s own product statements, not results from independent testing. See Riverside’s podcast recording page and verify device and feature availability for your guests before recording.
Its pricing page lists a Free tier with two one-off hours of separate audio and video tracks, Standard with five multitrack hours per month, and Pro and Live with 15 hours per month. These are the allowances displayed on the official pricing page at the time reflected in this article, October 3, 2026; plans and quotas can change. Review the current plan details and billing interval at Riverside pricing before committing.

Zoom and other meeting apps
A meeting app can be a practical fallback when guests already know how to join it. Zoom is not automatically unusable for a podcast: the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) advises using a good microphone, separate local tracks where available and reliable connections. A CBAA toolkit also says, “Specialised podcast platforms that split the audio are better options.” This guidance appears in an Australian community broadcasting context; it is a useful workflow distinction, not a universal guarantee about every meeting-app version or setup.
Riverside’s comparison article describes Zoom as familiar and says it supports separate audio tracks but not individual video tracks in the workflow it discusses. Because that comparison is vendor-authored, confirm current Zoom recording options and account settings directly before relying on those details. A connection-dependent recording can also be affected by call conditions, so make a short test and confirm the files you receive.

Audio editors and other named tools
Audacity and GarageBand are audio-only options named in Riverside’s comparison; they can fit workflows where recording is handled locally and production happens in an audio editor. The same comparison names SquadCast (described there as part of Descript), Zencastr, Podcastle and StreamYard, with descriptions including multitrack capture, distribution or custom video layouts. These descriptions are a shortlist for further checking, not a neutral ranking or a current feature and price guarantee. Riverside’s comparison was updated November 11, 2025, so verify current plans, guest requirements and outputs on each provider’s official site.
How to choose for your show
- Decide whether the deliverable is audio or video. If you publish audio only, prioritize separate participant audio tracks and an easy-to-edit download. If you publish video too, verify separate video tracks, resolution and layout options.
- Match the workflow to your guests. Ask guests what device and browser they will use, whether they can install an app, and whether they can grant microphone and recording permissions. Prefer the simplest setup that still produces the tracks you need.
- Check the actual plan allowance. Compare included multitrack hours, participant limits, storage, exports and billing interval against your expected recording schedule. Recheck the live plan page because quotas and prices change.
- Run a short test with a real guest device. Record, stop, download and open the files in your editing software. Confirm every participant’s track is present and synchronized before scheduling an important interview.
- Plan for failure and editing. Agree on a backup contact method, ask guests not to close the recording page until upload completes, and leave time to verify file delivery before editing.
Prepare guests for clean source audio
Ask each guest to use a high-quality microphone rather than a built-in laptop mic when possible; the CBAA toolkit gives this as practical advice to avoid tinny sound. A better microphone does not by itself address room echo or background noise, so choose a quiet space and test the sound before the interview.

- Use headphones to reduce the chance that the guest’s speakers feed your voice back into their microphone.
- Ask guests to silence notifications and avoid moving or handling the microphone while speaking.
- Have each person say a few sentences at normal interview volume during the test, then listen to the recorded files rather than relying only on how the live call sounded.
Copyright and reuse considerations
Recording software does not clear rights to music or other material included in an episode. The CBAA toolkit warns that internet-distributed podcast use of commercial music requires appropriate permission or licensing and recommends production-music libraries or original music. That guidance comes from an Australian community broadcasting resource, not universal legal advice; check the rules that apply where you publish and obtain permission from the relevant rights holders.
When a remote interview becomes a continuous YouTube stream
A recorded interview and a 24/7 YouTube stream are different workflows. If you later want to keep a channel live with uploaded video rather than record a guest interview, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists to YouTube. It is not a remote interview recorder and does not stream from a camera.
