Pain’s most memorable words in Naruto Shippuden express Nagato’s belief that people can understand one another only after experiencing suffering. But his plan to impose that suffering clashes with Naruto’s refusal to let pain become another reason for revenge. The lines below are brief excerpts attributed to Nagato in third-party episode transcripts; English wording can vary by dub or subtitle edition, so check the scene in the version you watch.

What Pain says about pain

In the origin flashback, Nagato speaks with his former teacher Jiraiya about the losses and violence that shaped him. The official episode guide calls episode 393 “Origin of Pain” and describes the early story of Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan as they search for Jiraiya (NARUTO Official Site, episode 393).

“That pain made me grow up.”

This short line presents suffering as a force that changed Nagato. It is not a claim that pain is good in itself: the flashback connects his outlook to wartime loss, and his later choices show how he turns personal suffering into a rationale for violence. The wording appears in a third-party transcript of episode 6.18, “Origin of Pain” (episode transcript).

“Knowing pain controls one’s words and thoughts.”

Nagato’s point is that experience can shape how people think and speak. In his philosophy, people who have not suffered cannot fully grasp the cost of conflict. The idea becomes dangerous when he treats his own conclusion as permission to make others suffer. This wording is also listed in the episode 6.18 transcript.

“Understanding such pain enables you to be kind to others.”

This line gives the empathy behind Nagato’s reasoning a more humane expression: knowing suffering might help someone recognize it in others. It appears in a third-party transcript of episode 6.16, in the Jiraiya–Nagato dialogue (episode transcript). Read alongside Nagato’s later actions, it also highlights the gap between understanding pain and choosing what to do with that understanding.

Is Pain Nagato or Yahiko?

Pain is the identity Nagato uses, and the six Paths of Pain are bodies he controls. The prominent Deva Path is Yahiko’s body; Yahiko is not the person directing Pain. That distinction matters when assigning lines: the dialogue and philosophy belong to Nagato, even when the Deva Path is the body seen speaking on screen. VIZ describes Naruto’s effort to reach Nagato as the power behind Pain (VIZ Media, Naruto Shippuden Part 7).

How Naruto challenges Nagato’s philosophy

Nagato argues that shared suffering could teach people the cost of war. Yet his method is to inflict suffering through fear and force, repeating the violence he says he wants people to understand. The official summary for episode 394, “Tale of Naruto Uzumaki,” says Naruto remains silent after hearing Nagato’s painful past and notes Nagato’s rejection of Jiraiya’s ideal as wishful thinking (NARUTO Official Site, episode 394).

Naruto’s answer is not to deny what Nagato has endured. Instead, he tries to reach him rather than treat revenge as inevitable. VIZ frames their confrontation as Naruto attempting to break through to Nagato after Pain attacks the Hidden Leaf. Their disagreement turns on what suffering should lead to:

  • How pain is used: Nagato imposes it as a lesson; Naruto refuses to make it a justification for further revenge.
  • How peace is pursued: Nagato relies on fear; Naruto tries to reach another person.
  • What Jiraiya’s hope means: Nagato dismisses it as wishful thinking, while Naruto’s response keeps the possibility of understanding alive.

Which episodes to revisit for Pain’s quotes

The lines above come from Nagato’s origin conversations with Jiraiya, not from the later confrontation with Naruto. The official site labels episode 393 “Origin of Pain” and episode 394 “Tale of Naruto Uzumaki.” For the Naruto–Nagato conflict, VIZ lists Part 7 as covering episodes 166–192 and describes Naruto trying to reach Nagato after the attack on the Hidden Leaf. Its listing offers Blu-ray/DVD, streaming, and digital options; availability and formats may vary by region and over time.

Why English versions of the quotes may differ

The cited dialogue wording comes from third-party episode transcript pages, not an official script. Dub and subtitle editions can translate the same exchange differently. Treat these short excerpts as wording leads, not definitive text for every release: if exact wording matters, check the episode in the specific English version you intend to quote.
