For a playlist of local cartoon files, start with OBS Studio’s built-in VLC Video source; you may not need a plugin at all. It supports playlists, looping, and shuffle once VLC is installed. Use OBS’s regular Media Source to loop a single file. Consider the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin only if you need to edit a playlist during playback or keep the current file selected after an OBS restart.
Playback automation does not grant permission to rebroadcast cartoons or guarantee monetization. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and its reused-content review is separate from copyright permission.

For a basic playlist, VLC Video is the simplest first choice because it already handles the central task: playing multiple files in sequence and looping them. The plugin is worth evaluating for its specific playlist-editing behavior, not because the available documentation establishes that it is universally more reliable.
Set up a local cartoon playlist in OBS
Before adding files
- Confirm your rights. Make sure you have permission for the intended territories and uses, including livestreaming, music, and any archive. If the content is licensed, ask whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel in Content ID.
- Choose the playback mode. For one file, use Media Source and enable its loop option. For multiple local files, install VLC and use VLC Video.
Configure VLC Video for a playlist
- Install VLC in the same architecture as OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video does not appear among the available sources, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches.
- In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the cartoon files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want items to play in a randomized order rather than the listed sequence.
- Set the source’s visibility behavior to suit your scene. If you use network media or network locations, check the source’s network-caching options; local files do not need a network source.
- Run through the playlist on the actual scene and computer you plan to use. Check that the source stays visible, that sound routes as intended, and that both video and audio transition correctly between files.
When the third-party plugin makes sense
Media Playlist Source may fit a workflow where you want to add or reorder items while the current video keeps playing, select a particular item, or retain the selected file across an OBS restart. Those are narrower needs than simply looping a playlist. The OBS Forum resource lists a minimum OBS version of 30.0.0, while an April 13, 2025 update to the project says the upstream change it uses has been merged since OBS 31 and that custom OBS builds are no longer needed. Because the version notes are not fully consistent, use the current release instructions for your OS and OBS build rather than assuming compatibility.

Check YouTube copyright and monetization separately
Copyright checks can interrupt a live stream
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If it detects content, it may show a placeholder, warn you to stop using it, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the issue continues. Even a licensed stream can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent and warrant that they have the rights needed to use the live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. That is a platform requirement, not a determination of what rights or exceptions apply in every country; those can vary by territory. See the YouTube Terms of Service.

Permission does not automatically establish monetization eligibility
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. Copyright enforcement and reused-content review are different checks, and YouTube says reused-content review can apply even when a creator has permission. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible; examples include similar or repetitive videos with minimal variation. Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but cautions that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a complete archive matters, record a local backup rather than relying on YouTube to save a very long broadcast. The 12-hour guidance is an operational limit stated by YouTube Help, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and confirm that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation and check the source list again.
- A playlist stops after the final file: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled. A single-file Media Source has its own loop setting; it does not turn that source into a multi-file playlist.
- The wrong item order plays: Disable Shuffle Playlist if you need the listed sequence, then review the playlist order.
- There is a brief pause when a source becomes active: OBS notes that reopening an inactive Media Source may cause a short delay. Test scene visibility and activation behavior before depending on it during a long broadcast.
- The plugin will not install or behave as expected: Check the current plugin release notes and installation instructions against your operating system and OBS build. The published version notes are not fully consistent, so do not assume a minimum-version label alone confirms compatibility.
- The video is replaced or the stream is interrupted: Treat this as a possible YouTube rights or Content ID issue, not a playlist setting. Check your permissions and whether the rights holder has allowlisted your channel.
- The archive is incomplete or absent: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured. Keep a local recording if the archive is important.
