For a standard SDR 4K60 YouTube stream, start with OBS’s Hardware (NVENC, AV1) encoder at P6: Slower (Better Quality). Set rate control to CBR, the keyframe interval to 2 seconds and bitrate to 35 Mbps, then use High Quality tuning, Two Passes (Quarter Resolution), Look-ahead, Psycho Visual Tuning and four B-frames. This is a practical starting configuration from OBS and YouTube guidance—not a tested universal winner for every RTX 4070, game or system.

Recommended OBS settings for SDR 4K60

In OBS, open Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced, then select the streaming tab. Choose Hardware (NVENC, AV1). The exact labels can vary by OBS version, but the following settings reflect the NVIDIA NVENC guide’s practical starting point for YouTube on an RTX 40-series GPU.

Setting Starting value Why it matters
Rate Control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live ingest.
Bitrate 35 Mbps YouTube’s current live-encoder recommendation for AV1/HEVC at 2160p 60fps, accessed in 2026.
Keyframe Interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Preset P6: Slower (Better Quality) The OBS NVENC guide’s quality-oriented starting preset.
Tuning High Quality The guide’s quality tuning choice.
Multipass Mode Two Passes (Quarter Resolution) The guide’s recommended starting multipass option.
Look-ahead On initially Included in the guide’s starting setup; turn it off if GPU utilization is high.
Psycho Visual Tuning On Included in the guide’s starting setup.
Maximum B-frames 4 with Look-ahead on; 2 if it is off OBS’s guide gives these values for the corresponding Look-ahead settings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. In OBS, configure the stream service and key in Settings > Stream; select YouTube and connect your account or enter the stream key provided by YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Choose the codec for SDR or HDR

SDR: start with AV1

For SDR, AV1 is the best-supported starting choice here: OBS’s guide recommends NVENC AV1 for YouTube with an RTX 40-series GPU, and YouTube lists 35 Mbps as its 4K60 recommendation for AV1 or HEVC. YouTube’s corresponding H.264 recommendation is 50 Mbps. Those recommendations do not establish that AV1 will look a particular percentage better on every stream; the available guidance is not a controlled RTX 4070 head-to-head quality test.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HDR: use HEVC/H.265

For YouTube HDR, choose HEVC/H.265, not AV1. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR, recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), and specifies 10-bit for HDR. OBS’s NVENC guide also points to HEVC with the main10 profile for YouTube HDR. Check that your OBS output, color format and HDR workflow are configured consistently before going live; the SDR settings above are not an HDR setup.

Bitrate and upload headroom

The 35 Mbps and 50 Mbps figures are YouTube recommendations for the stated codec and resolution/frame rate, not guarantees of image quality or evidence that a particular internet connection can sustain them. Leave additional upload capacity for normal household or office traffic, and test the actual connection at the time and place you plan to stream. If the upload fluctuates or YouTube reports ingest problems, lower the bitrate and retest rather than assuming the recommended target is sustainable on your line.

Set up and test the stream before an event

  1. Set the video output. In Settings > Video, configure a 3840 × 2160 output and 60 fps if your capture, game and system can produce it reliably. A 4K60 output setting does not guarantee that the game renders at 60 fps while OBS is encoding.
  2. Choose the encoder and values. In Settings > Output > Streaming, use the NVENC AV1 configuration in the table for SDR, or select HEVC/H.265 and the HDR settings appropriate to your workflow for HDR.
  3. Configure YouTube ingest. In Settings > Stream, select YouTube and connect your account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Use RTMPS where available, as YouTube recommends it.
  4. Run a representative test. Reproduce the motion, scene complexity, capture sources and audio you expect in the real stream. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. Check stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and confirm that audio and video arrive as intended before relying on the setup for an event.

YouTube says 4K live streams are optimized for quality at normal latency; its low-latency option is unavailable at 4K. If low latency is essential, weigh that constraint before choosing 4K.

Tune for GPU load, not just the preset name

The RTX 4070 both renders the game and encodes the stream. If GPU utilization is high, OBS warns that the system can lag; a high-quality preset cannot compensate for insufficient rendering headroom. First reduce the game’s frame rate or graphics settings. If GPU load remains high, disable Look-ahead and retest; the OBS guide also suggests using two B-frames when Look-ahead is off. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what improves stability.

The OBS NVIDIA NVENC guide is a practical resource last updated in 2022, not an RTX 4070-specific benchmark. OBS’s newer 31.0 advanced-options guidance cautions against Ultra High Quality tuning for gaming because it significantly reduces throughput; it is not a blanket gaming recommendation. The OBS 31.0 article also says split encode needs two or more Ada NVENC engines, a capability it identifies for the 4070 Ti or higher—not the ordinary RTX 4070. Results can vary with OBS release, drivers, game load and capture setup, so verify labels and performance in your installed version.

Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to try
OBS reports rendering or encoding lag GPU is under pressure from the game and stream workload. Lower the game’s frame rate or graphics settings. If utilization stays high, turn off Look-ahead and retest; use two B-frames with Look-ahead off.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops frames The connection may not sustain the configured bitrate consistently. Test upload stability under representative conditions, check for competing network traffic, then reduce bitrate and run another test.
The stream does not match the intended resolution or frame rate OBS output, source capture, game output or YouTube ingest settings may not align. Check OBS’s video output and streaming configuration, then verify the actual incoming stream in a test broadcast.
HDR does not appear correctly AV1 is not supported for YouTube HDR, or the codec/profile and HDR output are mismatched. Use HEVC/H.265 with a 10-bit HDR workflow; check OBS’s HEVC main10 guidance and verify the test stream.
YouTube ingest rejects or fails to connect Service, stream key, protocol or key status may be wrong. Confirm the YouTube service selection and current stream key in OBS and YouTube Studio; use RTMPS where available.
