There is no single best OBS bitrate for everyone in India: use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate only if your connection can sustain it steadily. For H.264, that means 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; if your upload fluctuates or OBS reports dropped frames, lower the bitrate or output resolution.
Choose a bitrate that matches both your output and your connection
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are targets for the stream sent to YouTube, not measurements of Indian broadband performance. Your usable upload capacity depends on the connection and route at the time you stream, so an advertised plan speed alone does not establish that a given bitrate will be stable. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate and choosing quality to fit the connection (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

These are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, accessed in 2026. They do not guarantee a stable stream at those rates on any particular connection. The table lists the specified targets; it does not establish recommendations for every resolution and frame-rate combination.
Set up OBS for YouTube
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test close to the time and place you plan to stream, as YouTube advises. Treat the result as a guide rather than proof that your route to YouTube will remain stable.
- Select output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution and FPS you intend to send. Choose a target that suits your footage and that you can encode reliably.
- Set the video bitrate. Open Settings > Output, select Advanced output mode if needed, then use the streaming section to set the encoder’s rate control to CBR and bitrate to the applicable YouTube recommendation above. OBS interface labels can vary by version and encoder.
- Set keyframes to 2 seconds. In the encoder’s streaming settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds (YouTube Help).
- Connect your YouTube stream key. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or schedule the stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect using the key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Test before the event. Run a private or unlisted test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative movement as the intended broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages before going public, then keep monitoring them while live.
Choose 30 or 60 fps—and a realistic resolution
When 30 fps is the sensible choice
Use 30 fps when the material is mostly talking, interviews, lectures, or documentary footage with modest movement, or when either the upload path or computer struggles at a higher target. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264, compared with 12 Mbps for 1080p60.

When 60 fps is worth the extra demand
60 fps can make fast movement look smoother, but it requires a higher recommended bitrate at the same resolution and can demand more from the computer. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax the system more than 30 fps (OBS Studio Overview Guide). If the computer cannot encode smoothly, try 30 fps even if the network appears adequate.
Lower resolution if the connection cannot hold the target
If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended rate for your preferred resolution and frame rate, move to a lower output target rather than insisting on the highest setting. YouTube transcodes live streams into different formats for viewers, so your ingest bitrate is not the only factor in their playback options (YouTube Help).

Troubleshoot dropped frames and unstable output
OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames in OBS indicate a connection problem in OBS’s troubleshooting guidance, rather than a direct measure of encoding load. Lower the bitrate first; if needed, reduce the output resolution as well. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed safe allocation. The guidance was published by OBS in 2024 and should be treated as a heuristic: leave room for other network traffic and changes in connection quality (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting).
- Use a wired Ethernet connection if Wi-Fi is unstable; OBS recommends wired networking for stability.
- Pause large uploads, downloads, backups, and other activity competing for upload capacity.
- Retest at the time and location you will stream, then lower the bitrate again if the problem returns.
A Cat6 Ethernet cable may help when Wi-Fi is the source of instability, but it does not increase your ISP plan’s upload speed or fix congestion or an unreliable upstream route.

The picture freezes or looks poor despite a high speed-test result
A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee of a stable live path. Test the stream itself and inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages. Try a lower bitrate and test again; also check whether other devices or applications are using upload capacity.
Network looks stable, but OBS cannot keep up
If the connection is not dropping frames but the computer struggles to encode, reduce the frame rate to 30 fps or lower the output resolution. These adjustments reduce system demands; increasing network bitrate will not fix an overloaded encoder.
