2024 brought a mix of new dramas, mysteries, thrillers and adaptations, alongside major returning seasons. This shortlist focuses on eight notable new series, chosen for their distinct premises and range of genres—not as an objective ranking. The dates and platforms below describe their original 2024 premieres; they do not confirm where a show is available to stream now.

- Factory sealed DVD
For readers interested in the series’ literary roots, The Maltese Falcon is the novel behind Sam Spade.
Death and Other Details — locked-room mystery at sea
TIME listed this Hulu mystery for January 16, 2024. Imogene Scott becomes entangled in a murder investigation aboard a restored Mediterranean liner and is paired with detective Rufus Cotesworth. Historical drama and psychological thriller
The New Look — fashion during and after the war
Apple announced a global Apple TV+ debut for February 14, 2024. The 10-episode historical drama follows Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and their contemporaries during World War II and the emergence of modern fashion. It opened with three episodes, then released weekly through April 3. Apple TV Press provides the series description and its original release schedule.

Apple announced a global Apple TV+ premiere for February 21, 2024. The eight-part psychological thriller stars Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks. Its release began with three episodes, followed by weekly installments through March 27. Apple TV Press is the source for the format, cast and schedule.

Two adaptations from familiar worlds
Fallout — a new story in a video-game universe
Amazon UK’s 2024 Prime Video guide said Fallout was available from April 12, 2024, and described it as based on the video-game series. Its setup places residents of a luxury shelter in a post-apocalyptic world two centuries after the apocalypse. The date and platform reflect that UK guide’s 2024 listing, not present-day availability in every country. Amazon UK’s 2024 guide provides those details.
Monsieur Spade and the book-to-screen connection
Monsieur Spade also belongs on an adaptation-minded watchlist: its connection to The Maltese Falcon offers a way to compare Hammett’s 1930 detective novel with a later screen story about Spade. The literary link is established in TIME’s preview; the novel’s publication year is part of the source identification there.

New shows versus returning seasons
Not every prominent 2024 TV event was a debut. TIME’s anticipated-shows list also included Bridgerton season 3, House of the Dragon season 2 and The Bear season 3. Those are returning seasons, not new series, so they are separate from this shortlist. For broader 2024 calendar context, Netflix’s 2024 slate announcement likewise distinguished new programming from returning titles.
