The picks below combine genre fit with historical audience and ranking evidence—not a claim that one show is objectively best or right for every viewer.
How to choose among Netflix’s Korean series from 2021
Use the premise and tone as your first filter. A show’s chart position can tell you that it attracted attention in a particular period; it cannot tell you whether you will enjoy its pacing, violence, humor, or romance. Netflix catalogs also differ by country, so check the title in your local Netflix app before planning a watch.
There is a reason these shows became a prominent part of Netflix’s Korean lineup. In a January 18, 2022 announcement, Netflix VP of Content (Korea) Don Kang wrote: “Overall, global viewing hours of our Korean shows grew six-fold last year, compared to 2019.” “Last year” refers to 2021, and the figure is Netflix’s own comparison of viewing hours, not a measure of critical quality. Netflix’s 2022 announcement also reported that Squid Game was its most-viewed show in 94 countries at its peak, with 95% of its viewership coming from outside Korea.
Top picks by mood
| Series | Best fit if you want | Premise or distinction | Historical audience evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squid Game | A tense, violent survival thriller with social satire | People in desperate circumstances compete in children’s games turned lethal. TIME’s September 2021 review highlighted its dark humor, violence, class satire, pace, and cliffhangers. | Netflix reported it was its most-viewed show in 94 countries at its peak; 95% of its viewership came from outside Korea. These are historical Netflix figures, not a current chart. |
| Vincenzo | Dark comedy, corruption, and a fight-the-system story | A sharp tonal contrast with Squid Game; Netflix classifies it among Korean dramas and TV comedies and describes its dark-comedy and corruption themes. | Ranked 15th in a study’s account of Netflix global top-100 rankings for 2021. |
| Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha | Romance and a gentler change of pace | A romance-oriented alternative in a list otherwise spanning thrillers, action, and horror. | Ranked 31st in the study’s account of the 2021 top 100. |
| My Name | Action and revenge | The lead pursues her father’s killer, according to a peer-reviewed study of Korean series. | Ranked 46th in the study’s account of the 2021 top 100. |
| Hellbound | Supernatural horror and mystery | A darker speculative choice for viewers drawn to ominous, otherworldly events. | Netflix reported 43.48 million viewing hours for its premiere, Top 10 placement in 93 countries, and first place in 34 countries. |
| The Silent Sea | Science-fiction mystery | A sci-fi alternative to contemporary crime, romance, and survival stories. | Netflix said it reached number one on weekly non-English Top 10 lists for its premiere; that chart placement is not a direct comparison of quality or total viewership. |
What the 2021 rankings can—and cannot—tell you
A peer-reviewed study by Yoon and Lee, published in 2025, reports these positions for Korean series in Netflix global top-100 rankings for 2021. The positions help identify shows that appeared in that historical ranking; they are not a current popularity chart or a verdict on artistic merit.

Which series should you watch after Squid Game?
- For another high-stakes, unsettling story: try Hellbound if supernatural horror and mystery appeal more than a grounded competition.
- For action instead of psychological survival: choose My Name, a revenge story centered on a woman pursuing her father’s killer.
- For a tonal reset: Vincenzo brings dark comedy and corruption themes, while Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha offers a romance-oriented option.
- For speculative mystery: consider The Silent Sea if science fiction is the draw.
Where to verify a title
Netflix’s title pages provide its own current descriptions and catalog listings, but availability can vary by territory and change over time. Check your country’s Netflix search or title page before deciding what to watch; the historical rankings and viewing figures above do not establish that a show is currently available in your region.
