This April 2026 guide groups a varied set of options by viewing mood and keeps the calendar and streaming details tied to the dates on which they were reported.
Choose by the kind of mystery you want
The recommendations below come from a Prime Video-focused list published by Tom’s Guide on January 18, 2026. Its descriptions and season or renewal notes reflect what that article reported at the time; they are not a guarantee of present-day status or availability. Check the service’s live catalog in your country before starting a series.
| Show | Subgenre and premise | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Ballard | Gritty crime and cold-case investigation. Tom’s Guide describes Detective Renée Ballard leading an LAPD cold-case division and reports a July 2025 premiere. | Viewers who want a grounded police investigation. |
| Lazarus | A cold-case mystery with a supernatural edge, involving the protagonist’s father and sister. | Viewers who like family secrets and reality-bending puzzles. |
| Shelter | A young-adult mystery that begins with a missing student and expands into disappearances and family secrets. | Viewers looking for a character-led disappearance mystery. |
| The Devil’s Hour | A dark, horror-tinged supernatural thriller built around a murder investigation. Tom’s Guide reported two seasons and a third-season renewal in January 2026. | Viewers comfortable with horror elements and a supernatural premise. |
| The Rig | A science-fiction survival mystery set on a North Sea oil rig cut off by a strange fog. Tom’s Guide describes it as a more divisive pick. | Viewers who want an isolated setting and speculative suspense. |
Tom’s Guide’s January 2026 list is a useful mood-based starting point, not a definitive ranking or a current catalog check.
April’s mystery programming: new episodes, not necessarily new series
A Rotten Tomatoes streaming roundup updated April 6, 2026 listed weekly episodes of The Brokenwood Mysteries, Mystery Road: Origin season 2, and Murdoch Mysteries on Acorn TV, alongside the Dark Winds season finale on AMC+ on April 5. These are dated programming notes: they identify episodes scheduled or listed during that month, not new launches, full-series availability, or a promise that the shows remain on those services today.
#1 Best Overall
The roundup describes its scope as “new original shows, movies, and catalog classics” being added that month. Its entries are useful for understanding what was on the April calendar, but they do not establish which series is best. See the April 2026 streaming roundup.
How to use ratings without mistaking them for a verdict
Rotten Tomatoes’ “Best Mystery & Thriller TV Shows Streaming Now” page, dated September 2026, includes titles such as Neagley and Slow Horses and displays critic and audience percentages. The page defines “Fresh” as at least 60% positive reviews and “Hot” as at least 60% positive user ratings. Those labels describe the platform’s rating thresholds; they do not make a title objectively superior to another, and the page is a later, dynamic discovery snapshot—not an April 2026 ranking.
Rank #2
- 4K restorations by StudioCanal
- Includes new audio commentaries for all three films
- From the KL Studio Classics label
- Volume 4 of the British Noir series
If you consult the Rotten Tomatoes mystery and thriller page, treat critic and audience scores as separate signals, note when you viewed them, and use them to narrow choices rather than replace your own preference about tone or subject.
A longer fantasy-mystery option
For a series that leans toward fantasy and mystery rather than crime or thriller, Disney+ Press announced a continuous stream of all seven seasons of Once Upon a Time beginning April 23, 2026. That announcement establishes the event, not a standing catalog listing or a mystery/thriller ranking. Check whether the series is available in your region before planning a watch-through. Details are in the Disney+ Press announcement.
Rank #3
What to watch next if you prefer international crime
On April 20, 2026, AMC Global Media announced Acorn TV’s second annual Murder Mystery May, beginning May 1, with titles including You’re Killing Me, Summerwater, Dead & Buried, and The Island. This was a near-term follow-up to April’s programming, not evidence that those titles were already available throughout April or remain available now. The company described Acorn TV as “the leading streaming service for compelling international crime dramas and murder mysteries”—its own promotional characterization, not an independent market ranking. Read the April 20 Acorn TV announcement and check the service’s current catalog for your region.
