Compare the playing format, surface, dimensions and included accessories rather than assuming one material or model is best for everyone.
Which washboard is best for playing music?
For regular musical use, start by looking at boards sold as musical instruments. Cincinnati Washboards says its founders designed a board specifically for musicians and launched the company in 2016; Columbus Washboard Company also describes its washboards as bluegrass instruments. These maker descriptions establish intended use, not independent sound-quality or durability results.
A household or decorative washboard can also be played, but the available sources do not establish that it will sound, feel or hold up like a purpose-built instrument. If you are choosing between them, prioritize clear construction details, dimensions, playing position and return terms over a product name alone.
There is no evidence here for a universal “best” model or a dependable tonal ranking of surface materials. The practical choice is the board that fits your posture, playing context and preferred feel.

What should you compare before buying?
Playing format and posture
Decide where the board will sit while you play. Boney Fingers describes both wearable washboards and models intended for lap or stand use. A wearable board may suit a player who wants it attached while performing; a lap-or-stand model suits a more fixed position. Check how the board is held or mounted and whether the format leaves your hands free in the way you need.
Surface and playing feel
Columbus Washboard Company lists surfaces including spiral metal, galvanized metal, stainless steel, brass and glass, as well as non-metal options. These choices provide different physical surfaces to tap or scrape, but the source material does not establish a reliable sound ranking. If possible, assess a board in person or look for a seller’s specific description and photos of the playing surface.
Rank #2
- PERCUSSION FIRST - The Cincinnati Washboard is the first washboard designed and built for playing music, not washing clothes.
- PLAY ANY GENRE - You can play any genre of music with a Cincinnati Washboard. Even better - you can play in acoustic settings where drum sets are overpowering.
- EASY TO LEARN - Anyone can learn to play the washboard and the foundations of percussion.
- PORTABLE - Take a complete percussion set with you anywhere you can take your backpack.
- CUSTOMIZE TO THE MOON - The Small Washboard is the perfect canvas for designing your full (mobile) percussion set, just like your drum set.
Size, weight and construction
Check the current listing for actual dimensions, weight, construction details and how the board is meant to be supported. A board that looks suitable in a photo may not fit your lap, stand or preferred playing position. Clear specifications make it easier to judge the fit before ordering.
Accessories and seller terms
Thimbles are a common way to tap and scratch the surface, while spoons are another option. Some boards also accommodate added percussion: Cincinnati Washboards lists a cymbal, jam-block set and support-arm kit among its add-ons. Confirm what is included in the specific listing; an accessory shown in a product photo may be sold separately. Check current stock, shipping, return terms and warranty information with the seller, since those details can vary and are not established by the maker descriptions cited here.
Rank #3
- STURDY WOOD AND TIN CONSTRUCTION
- 15.5 INCHES TALL X 7 3/8 INCHES WIDE
- GREAT FOR HAND WASHING DELICATES
- TIN AREA IS 6.5 INCHES TALL X 5.5 INCHES WIDE
Can you use a laundry washboard as a musical instrument?
Yes. A washboard’s ribbed surface can produce rhythm when tapped or scraped, and household-style boards have been used musically. But “playable” does not mean interchangeable: the available sources do not establish equivalent comfort, sound or durability across laundry boards and purpose-built musical models. For casual experimentation, a board you already own may be enough; for regular performance, compare its playing position and construction with a board designed for musicians.
The Musical Instrument Museum places washboards in a broader American folk-music tradition of repurposed objects. Its “Instruments! Washboard and Spoons” handout says: “At the turn of the twentieth century, amateur musicians in the United States were recycling jugs, washboards, spoons, and washtubs into melodic and percussive instruments.” The handout also includes simple patterns and a do-it-yourself activity using cardboard, straw and foil.
Rank #4
- EASY TO LEARN — No musical experience needed. If you can tap your fingers, you can play the Pocket Washboard. Start making music in minutes, not months. Perfect for beginners and seasoned players alike.
- THREE INSTRUMENTS IN ONE — Play it three ways: hang it from your shoulder with the included strap for traditional washboard style with thimbles, set it on your lap like a travel cajon to play with your fingertips, or play it with sticks or brushes for different textures. One instrument, endless possibilities.
- PLAY ANYWHERE, ANYTIME — Take your rhythm wherever you go. Practice at home, jam at the beach, busk on the street, or add percussion to any acoustic session. No setup, no power, no limits.
- ULTRA-PORTABLE — At just 10.25 x 5.90 x 0.80 inches, it fits in any backpack, carry-on, or gig bag. The most portable full-percussion instrument ever made.
- BIG SOUND, SMALL SIZE — Patent-pending resonator box design delivers surprisingly rich, full tone. Don't let the size fool you.
How do you start playing a washboard?
- Choose a secure, comfortable position. Set up the board in the format you intend to use, whether wearable, on your lap or on a stand. Check the dimensions and holding method before buying if you are unsure how it will fit.
- Begin with a steady tapping pattern. Use your fingers or thimbles to tap the ribbed surface and keep a consistent pulse.
- Vary the attack. Try softer and louder taps to create contrast without changing the basic pattern.
- Add scratches gradually. Once tapping feels familiar, introduce short scraping motions. Spoons are another playing option demonstrated in the museum handout.
- Add accessories only if they suit the part. Bells and other accents can be attached by some players; purpose-made add-ons may include items such as a cymbal or jam block.
This sequence follows the beginner advice from Spoons for the People, which recommends starting with taps, varying loud and soft sounds, then adding scratches as you become comfortable.

Columbus Washboard Company’s historical pages provide a sense of the instrument’s manufacturing past, not a measure of today’s market or proof of current popularity. The company reports that it sold 1,287,757 washboards in 1941 and that more than 15 million were produced and sold during 1926–1955. Its heritage account also attributes more than 23 million washboards produced and sold from 1926 until founders Frederic and Margaret Martin’s deaths in 1987 and 1988. These are company-reported historical figures, not independently audited industry totals; the company notes that it does not have complete early annual sales records.

Where can you find a musical washboard?
Search specifically for a “musical washboard” and confirm that the live listing is for an instrument rather than a household or decorative board. Maker sites provide examples of purpose-built boards and formats, including Cincinnati Washboards, Columbus Washboard Company and Boney Fingers Washboards. Their descriptions help identify product types, but do not independently compare sound or performance.
Availability, prices and seller terms change, so verify the current listing and included items before purchasing. Related searches such as washboard thimbles, finger picks for washboard and percussion spoons may help you find playing accessories; confirm compatibility and whether each item is sold separately.
