For the prepared videos in a YouTube playlist, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz as a straightforward default. That is YouTube’s recommended upload format, not the format of the live connection itself: when an encoder sends a livestream to YouTube, choose settings for the ingestion protocol, such as RTMP/RTMPS, separately.

First, separate the playlist files from the live stream

A 24/7 playlist workflow has two distinct parts: the video files you prepare or upload, and the encoded signal sent to YouTube as a live stream. MP4 is a recommended container for uploaded files. It does not mean that an encoder sends an MP4 file as the livestream transport.

For uploaded files, YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio; its upload guidance specifies 48 kHz audio. For RTMP/RTMPS livestream ingestion, YouTube instead lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. The appropriate live format depends on the protocol and encoder support. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and live encoder settings cover these separate workflows.

Recommended settings for prepared playlist videos

For a conventional SDR documentary playlist, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio is a practical, broadly supported starting point. Follow YouTube’s upload recommendations for the file’s other encoding details:

  • GOP: closed GOP, with a GOP length of half the frame rate.
  • Frame rate: match the frame rate at which the material was recorded.
  • Audio: AAC-LC is a sensible default; YouTube also names Opus and Eclipsa Audio. Use 48 kHz for uploads.

These are YouTube upload recommendations, not a guarantee that every source, editing export, or playback chain will behave identically. Check the rendered files and the complete live path before leaving a channel unattended.

Settings for the signal sent to YouTube

If your own encoder is producing the continuous stream, use settings for the selected ingestion protocol rather than treating the source MP4 settings as live encoder settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.

Audio sample rate and bitrate

For live encoder audio, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. Its advanced settings list 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1. This differs from the 48 kHz upload recommendation: set the audio according to whether you are preparing a file or encoding a live feed.

Choose video bitrate for codec, resolution, and frame rate

YouTube does not prescribe one bitrate for every 24/7 stream. The recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Selected RTMP/RTMPS recommendations from YouTube’s live settings table are:

When HLS is the right ingestion choice

YouTube describes HLS as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. Its HLS setup supports H.264 and HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. It requires TS segments, segment durations from one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. This is a live delivery protocol choice; it does not change the meaning of an MP4 source playlist file. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Prepare a 24/7 stream before relying on it

  1. Check the source files. Export the uploaded videos with the recommended MP4/H.264/AAC-LC settings, then play them through to check for missing audio, unintended blank sections, or export errors.
  2. Set the live encoder independently. Choose RTMPS or HLS and configure a compatible live video and audio codec, the intended resolution and frame rate, CBR where using the RTMP/RTMPS guidance, and a two-second keyframe interval for RTMP/RTMPS.
  3. Check available upload capacity. Run a speed test under realistic conditions. YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload capacity available beyond the primary stream, backup stream, and bitrate needs; do not plan to consume the entire connection’s upload capacity.
  4. Test the whole chain in advance. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Confirm that the prepared files, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest work together, then monitor stream health during operation.

A network disruption can break a stream, so uninterrupted operation depends on the stability of the encoder and network as well as the chosen formats. YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips explain the relevant setup and network checks.

Common format and connection problems

  • The uploaded file is rejected or does not process as expected: check that it is an MP4 with no edit lists and that the moov atom is at the front (“Fast Start”); confirm the video and audio codecs match YouTube’s upload guidance.
  • The live encoder will not connect or the stream is unhealthy: verify that the encoder’s video and audio formats match the selected ingestion protocol, check the stream key and ingest configuration, and test RTMPS or HLS settings as applicable.
  • Video looks unstable or the stream drops: check actual upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom; a speed test and a monitored test stream can expose a connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.
  • Audio behaves differently between file and livestream: confirm the sample rate for the workflow—48 kHz for uploads, 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 for live encoder settings—and confirm the channel layout and supported codec.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want an encoder computer or home connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. There is no need for a computer, OBS, or home connection to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
