The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021)
A family road trip becomes a fight for survival when Pal, an AI, begins taking over the world. The film turns a robot apocalypse into an animated family adventure, making it a lively counterpoint to the darker futures in the Terminator films. This animated post-apocalyptic story presents the aftermath of a machine catastrophe: a machine creates war machines that exterminate humanity. Its focus is less on the moment of takeover than on the hostile world left behind.

WALL-E (2008)
WALL-E is a more indirect entry. Aboard a ship carrying human survivors, the machine AUTO has been given control of steering. The result is not a conventional robot war but a reflective story about human dependence and machines holding authority. Ex Machina (2015)
This contained android story is a strong choice if “robots take over” includes an intelligent machine pursuing its own agenda, rather than a global uprising. Its small scale makes it an intimate creator-and-creation story, not a mass takeover.

M3GAN (2023)
M3GAN is a lifelike doll designed to act as a child’s companion and protector; the danger grows out of that personal relationship and her intended role. How to choose a movie by the kind of takeover
- For a civilization-scale machine war: choose The Terminator or Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
- For an explicit worldwide robot revolution: choose I, Robot.
- For a lighter apocalypse: choose The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
- For machine control without a conventional robot war: choose WALL-E.
- For a contained rebellion: try Ex Machina or M3GAN.
What robot-uprising stories tend to imagine
A 2021 review in SN Applied Sciences examined 134 science-fiction movies and 108 unique fictional robots selected to study expectations about future robots. In that sample, 47% of the robots were service assistants or soldiers, and 15% of the films featured robots that began as service assistants and later left their assigned task. Those figures describe the study’s selected films, not all science fiction and not real-world robotics. Read the 2021 review for its scope and categories.
The familiar pattern—machines created to serve or protect people becoming a threat—connects films as different as I, Robot and M3GAN. It is a storytelling device, not evidence that real robots are likely to take over. For another cultural reference point, the Associated Press quoted James Cameron saying, “I warned you guys in 1984 and you didn’t listen.” That line is a comment on the enduring resonance of The Terminator, not proof that its fictional events predicted reality.
