Paul Thomas Anderson’s political action comedy led Metacritic’s eligible 2025 releases with a 95 Metascore, topped the Sight and Sound critics’ poll and Film Comment’s contributor poll, and went on to win Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards.
That consensus is not the same thing as an objective verdict. The best choice depends on whether you want political spectacle, original horror, literary drama, international cinema, a documentary, or an intimate character study. - Critical aggregation: Metacritic’s year-end table uses weighted professional-critic scores and requires a minimum number of reviews. It is useful for identifying broad critical strength, but it favors films that received substantial coverage.
- International critics’ opinion: The Sight and Sound poll is based on ballots from critics around the world rather than a numeric review average.
- Professional year-end lists: Film Comment’s ranking reflects a contributor poll and individual critical appreciations.
- Awards recognition: The Academy, BAFTA, and Golden Globes show what voting bodies rewarded. Awards are meaningful evidence, but they reflect institutional preferences and voting systems rather than universal agreement.
For that reason, the language below distinguishes between a “consensus pick,” an “awards-season favorite,” and the “best fit” for a particular kind of viewer.
The 10 best movies of 2025
1. One Battle After Another — Best overall
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is the year’s clearest consensus choice. It combines the scale of a major studio film with the unruly energy of a political black comedy and the formal ambition of an auteur work. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary trying to protect his daughter from the authoritarian figure who once captured her mother.
The film’s appeal is unusually broad for a work this formally ambitious: it offers action, comedy, political urgency, star performances, and a propulsive central pursuit. Metacritic ranked it first among eligible 2025 releases with a 95 Metascore, while Sight and Sound critics and Film Comment contributors also placed it at the top of their year-end selections.
The awards-season result strengthened rather than contradicted that critical consensus. At the 98th Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture, Directing, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing, Casting, and Supporting Actor for Sean Penn. It also won Best Film at the 2026 BAFTAs.
Best for: Viewers who want one film that combines political ideas, action, humor, spectacle, and serious filmmaking craft.
2. Sinners — Best original genre film
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is one of 2025’s most substantial genre achievements: an original supernatural period film that uses horror, music, history, racial politics, and mythic storytelling as parts of the same design.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Its genre framework makes the film immediately accessible, but its historical and political dimensions give it more to discuss after the credits. The Academy recognized that combination by awarding it Original Screenplay, Original Score, and Cinematography. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor.
Best for: Viewers who want a visually ambitious horror film that also carries historical weight and rewards analysis.
3. Hamnet — Best historical or literary drama
Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel approaches Shakespearean history through grief, marriage, family, and artistic creation rather than treating its famous subject as the only story that matters.
Hamnet became a major awards-season drama. It won the 2026 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture–Drama, and Jessie Buckley won the Academy Award for Best Actress. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and several other major Academy categories.

Its strength is less about historical spectacle than emotional perspective: the film asks what private loss can mean inside a family whose public legacy will eventually overshadow the people who endured it.
Best for: Viewers looking for a literary period film centered on grief, marriage, parenthood, and the relationship between suffering and art.
4. Sentimental Value — Best family drama
Joachim Trier’s Norwegian family drama is an emotionally intricate work about difficult parents, damaged relationships, memory, and the stories families tell about themselves. It is a natural choice for viewers who prefer character psychology and European art cinema to conventional plot mechanics.
The film won the 2026 Academy Award for International Feature Film and received nominations for Best Picture, Directing, Supporting Actor, and acting categories. Stellan Skarsgård won the Golden Globe for Supporting Actor.
Best for: Viewers who want a carefully observed family story with strong performances and emotional complexity.
5. The Secret Agent — Best international political thriller
Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian political thriller provides historical texture and an international perspective that broaden the year’s conversation beyond English-language awards contenders. It ranked fifth among Metacritic’s highest-scoring 2025 films, with a 91 Metascore.
The film was Brazil’s submission for International Feature Film and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Its combination of political suspense, historical atmosphere, and personal stakes makes it a particularly strong choice for viewers who want a thriller with more on its mind than the mechanics of its plot.
Best for: Viewers interested in political cinema, national history, and suspense rooted in a specific social reality.

Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident won the 2025 Palme d’Or at Cannes and earned a 91 Metascore. It is a politically forceful thriller, but its power comes from moral uncertainty: personal memory, suspicion, and state repression continually complicate the characters’ attempts to decide what is true and what should be done.
The film later received Academy Award nominations including International Feature Film and Original Screenplay. It also retains enough suspense and entertainment value to reach viewers who do not usually seek out overtly political cinema.

7. Marty Supreme — Best kinetic auteur film
Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme is an energetic sports drama about obsessive ambition, outsider status, and the compulsive drive to win. Its fast dialogue, heightened performances, and restless New York filmmaking give it a distinct rhythm.
Metacritic gave it an 89 Metascore. The film received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Directing, Actor, Original Screenplay, Editing, and Production Design. Timothée Chalamet won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
Best for: Viewers who enjoy volatile protagonists, rapid-fire dialogue, underdog stories, and films that turn ambition into something both comic and unsettling.
8. Sorry, Baby — Best intimate debut
Eva Victor’s debut feature follows Agnes as she tries to continue living after a traumatic event. Rather than reducing recovery to a single dramatic breakthrough, the film pays attention to the uneven rhythms of ordinary life: friendship, awkwardness, humor, loneliness, and the small decisions that make moving forward possible.
With a 90 Metascore, Sorry, Baby was one of Metacritic’s highest-rated films of the year. Critics repeatedly highlighted its ability to hold pain and comedy in the same frame without treating either as a simple release from the other.

Óliver Laxe’s Spanish-French road film is one of 2025’s most formally distinctive international releases. Its desert-rave setting, physical intensity, forceful sound design, and existential drama make it an experience as much as a conventional narrative.
Sirāt was featured prominently in Sight and Sound’s discussion of the year’s strongest cinema and received an Academy Award nomination for International Feature Film. It is a particularly strong recommendation for viewers willing to accept a challenging structure in exchange for immersion, landscape, sound, and atmosphere.
Best for: Viewers who prioritize sensory filmmaking, striking landscapes, intense sound, and challenging festival cinema.

The film appeared among Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed new films in its cited 2025 guide, with a 97% Tomatometer score. That score is a snapshot from that guide rather than a permanent measure, but it reflects the film’s strong critical reception.
Best for: Viewers who want a sharply designed, darkly comic thriller about work, status, economic pressure, and desperation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The best documentaries of 2025
Documentaries can be underrepresented in a general “best movies” ranking because the most visible year-end aggregates and awards conversations often center on narrative features. That does not mean nonfiction filmmaking was less ambitious in 2025. These two documentaries deserve special attention and should be treated as essential discoveries in their own category.
Recommended Free Tools
My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow — Best documentary discovery
This documentary follows independent journalists confronting government repression in Russia. Metacritic ranked it third overall in its 2025 release-year table, placing it among the most highly regarded releases of the year across categories.
Its importance is not only topical. The film documents the pressure placed on independent reporting while also focusing on the people doing the work: their professional commitments, personal risks, and attempts to maintain a public record under increasingly hostile conditions.
Best for: Viewers interested in journalism, censorship, political repression, and documentaries that record history while it is still unfolding.
The Alabama Solution — Best investigative documentary
The Alabama Solution follows incarcerated men exposing misconduct in Alabama’s prison system. Metacritic placed it among the highest-scoring releases of 2025.
The film is a strong recommendation for documentary viewers who value investigative reporting and testimony from people directly affected by institutional abuse. Its subject also demonstrates why documentaries can make systems visible in a way that a conventional political thriller may not: the film’s evidence and testimony are tied to the lived consequences of policy.
Best for: Viewers looking for investigative nonfiction about prisons, misconduct, accountability, and institutional power.

What this ranking leaves out
Any annual best-of list has structural limits. Review aggregators give greater visibility to films with substantial professional coverage. Festival films may be critically celebrated but difficult to find outside major cities or specialty platforms. Awards bodies can reward campaigns, institutional habits, and category rules as well as artistic achievement. Documentary films, independent releases, animation, and work from regions with less international distribution can therefore be underrepresented.
The most defensible conclusion is not that every viewer must rank these films in this order. It is that One Battle After Another is the strongest consensus pick, while the rest answer different versions of the question. Sinners is the best original genre choice; Hamnet is the leading literary drama; Sentimental Value is the family-film recommendation; It Was Just an Accident and The Secret Agent lead the international political-thriller group; and My Undesirable Friends: Part I — Last Air in Moscow and The Alabama Solution are the documentary discoveries to seek out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is One Battle After Another objectively the best movie of 2025?
No ranking can make that claim objectively. It is the strongest consensus pick because it led Metacritic’s eligible 2025 releases, topped the Sight and Sound critics’ poll and Film Comment’s contributor poll, and won Best Picture and several other major awards. Individual viewers may reasonably prefer another film on the list.
