For documentary viewers, the best live-TV service is not automatically the one with the biggest channel number. The more useful questions are whether it carries Discovery, HISTORY, National Geographic, Smithsonian, A&E, PBS, BBC America, and the news channels that cover live events—and whether its DVR lets you keep a long-running series long enough to watch it.
We compared the leading services on channel breadth, documentary and factual programming, local coverage, sports and news, DVR rules, simultaneous streams, price, and the restrictions most likely to appear after signup. Prices and plan details below were verified on August 8, 2026. Local channels, regional sports networks, taxes, promotions, and availability can vary by ZIP code.

| Hulu + Live TV | Live TV plus on-demand bundles | $89.99/mo. | Unlimited; nine-month retention | 4.25/5 |

| DIRECTV | Large traditional-TV lineups | $69.98/mo. Entertainment package with listed Gemini lease fee | DVR/cloud DVR included | 3.75/5 |

| Frndly TV | Family and history-oriented channels | $8.99/mo. | Classic and Premium only | 3.5/5 |
Our overall pick is YouTube TV. It has the strongest combination of channels, local stations, sports, news, an easy-to-use guide, and unlimited DVR capacity. Philo is the better value if you mainly want factual and entertainment networks and do not need local broadcast stations or major sports. Sling TV is the most flexible option for people willing to build a smaller package around the channels they actually watch.
1. YouTube TV: best overall
Rating: 4.5/5
YouTube TV is the safest recommendation for a household that wants documentaries alongside local news, national news, sports, and prime-time television. The standard plan costs $82.99 per month and includes 100+ channels, six household accounts, three simultaneous streams, and unlimited DVR capacity.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Its DVR is particularly useful for documentary viewers who follow series rather than individual broadcasts. Add a program to the library and YouTube TV records current and future airings. The catch is important: “unlimited” describes storage capacity, not permanent ownership. Recordings eventually expire.
The guide is also unusually easy to adapt. On a TV, use Live → Sort → Edit → Live guide settings. On the web or mobile app, go to Profile photo → Settings → Live guide. Removing channels you never watch makes a large factual-TV lineup much easier to navigate.
What we liked
- Strong all-purpose lineup with local channels in many markets.
- Unlimited DVR capacity with no separate storage charge.
- Up to three standard simultaneous streams.
- Useful Multiview for news, live events, and sports.
- Six household accounts make it practical for families.
What to watch out for
Local affiliates and sports rights depend on location. When traveling in the United States, YouTube TV generally shows local channels for the place you are visiting rather than the local stations from home. It is unavailable internationally, and VPNs or proxies can cause playback failures.
The current displayed promotion offers the standard plan for $67.99 per month for the first three months for eligible new users, with the offer shown as ending August 26, 2026. Treat that as an introductory price, not the normal cost.
2. Hulu + Live TV: best for live TV and on-demand bundles
Rating: 4.25/5
Hulu + Live TV costs $89.99 per month with ads and combines live channels with Hulu’s on-demand catalog, Disney+ with ads, and ESPN access. The Premium + Live TV plan is listed at $99.99 per month and includes Disney+ Premium.
This is a strong choice if documentaries are only one part of the household’s viewing. Disney’s catalog, Hulu’s original programming, and live news and factual channels give it more breadth than a documentary-focused budget service. Hulu advertises 100+ live channels, but local availability must be checked by ZIP code.
Unlimited DVR is included, and live recordings can be stored for up to nine months. That is plenty for most series, but it is not a permanent archive. Hulu’s on-demand ad rules are separate from its DVR rules: Premium can remove ads from eligible on-demand content, while live channels continue to carry commercial breaks.

- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.
The app detail that matters
The included Disney+ and ESPN access is used through their separate apps. You may need to activate those services and sign in independently. ESPN access is also limited to the content included with the Hulu package; it should not be treated as a completely separate, unrestricted ESPN subscription.
3. Sling TV: best for controlling the bill
Rating: 4/5
Sling is the best fit for viewers who would rather assemble a lean package than pay for a broad national bundle. Orange and Blue each cost $45.99 per month, with channel availability depending on the plan and ZIP code. Sling also offers extras, Essentials, Select, and short-term 1-, 3-, and 7-day passes.
Every paid subscriber gets 50 hours of cloud DVR. Unlimited DVR is an additional $5 per month. Orange permits one simultaneous stream, Blue permits three, and Orange & Blue permits up to four—but the four-stream claim has a significant qualification. Only one Orange-exclusive channel can be watched at a time, alongside up to three other streams.
Sling Blue and Orange & Blue carry some local channels in qualifying markets. Orange does not include local channels. That makes a ZIP-code check essential before choosing Sling as a complete replacement for an antenna or another live-TV service.
Good value, but a less complete replacement
Sling is attractive when its specific channel mix matches your needs. It is less suitable if you expect every local broadcast network, a large national lineup, or unrestricted family streaming. Some content cannot be recorded, including Local Now, certain listed network extras, Pluto, and local channels received through an antenna.
Recommended Free Tools
Sling currently promotes Freestream and short-term passes rather than a conventional free trial for its standard monthly service. Monthly subscribers cancel through their account and retain access until the end of the paid period; 1-, 3-, and 7-day passes end automatically.
4. Fubo: best for sports-heavy documentary households
Rating: 4/5
Fubo is a sensible choice for households that want factual programming but also watch a lot of live sport. Its current plans include Pro, Elite, and Latino-focused options, but exact prices and channel lineups are dynamically presented and vary by location. Taxes and regional restrictions may apply.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Do not rely on an old Fubo review for pricing. Selected subscription prices changed for billing cycles beginning on or after January 1, 2026. Enter your ZIP code on the current plans page before comparing it with YouTube TV or Hulu.
Fubo’s cloud DVR recordings expire after nine months. To find a game, select Sports from the website’s top menu and filter by sport, league, and date. This is useful for testing whether a particular event is actually available in your market rather than assuming that carrying a network guarantees access to every game.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fubo’s main weakness for documentary-first viewers is uncertainty: regional channels, local stations, taxes, rights, and pricing require more checking than the simpler headline comparisons suggest.
5. DIRECTV: best for a traditional, broad channel lineup
Rating: 3.75/5
DIRECTV remains appealing to viewers who want a conventional pay-TV experience and a large channel package. Its current Entertainment package lists 90+ channels at $69.98 per month including the listed $10 Gemini lease fee. Choice lists 125+ channels at $89.98, Ultimate 160+ at $99.98, and Premier 185+ at $159.98 under the displayed package structure.
Those figures need careful reading. Promotional discounts, the Gemini fee, taxes, and a regional sports fee of up to $19.99 per month on applicable packages can affect the real bill. Use the checkout price—not the first promotional figure—as the comparison point.
DIRECTV offers satellite plus device, streaming app plus device, and internet-only streaming app options. A satellite dish is not required for the internet-only version. The Gemini device brings third-party streaming apps into the interface, but those apps still require separate subscriptions and logins.

DIRECTV is a good choice for channel breadth, but it is harder to recommend on value when a household does not need its larger bundles.

- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
- Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote

6. Philo: best low-cost option for documentary and factual channels
Rating: 4/5
Philo Essential costs $25 per month and includes 70+ paid channels, 100+ ad-supported free channels, 75,000+ on-demand titles, three simultaneous streams, and up to 10 profiles. Paid-plan recordings can be retained for one year and fast-forwarded.
The channel mix is entertainment-focused rather than sports- or broadcast-focused. Its lineup includes networks such as A&E, AMC, Discovery Channel, Food Network, Hallmark Channel, HISTORY, HGTV, Lifetime, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TLC, TV Land, and WE tv. There are no local broadcast networks, ESPN, or major national sports networks.
That makes Philo unusually good value for viewers who mainly watch factual series, history programming, reality documentaries, lifestyle shows, and entertainment channels. It is not a complete replacement for an antenna if you need ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, or PBS.

Philo also has a free-channel experience. In April 2026, the company said its standalone free lineup had grown to 130+ live ad-supported channels. Free-channel DVR is not equivalent to the paid plan: recordings are limited to eligible titles and retained for up to 30 days. Essential currently includes a seven-day trial for new customers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Frndly TV: best inexpensive family and history package
Rating: 3.5/5
Frndly TV is the budget choice for viewers interested in a narrower group of family, lifestyle, entertainment, and history-oriented channels. All three plans include the same 50+ live channels and on-demand library:
| Plan | Monthly price | DVR and devices |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $8.99 | No DVR |
| Classic | $10.99 | HD, two devices, DVR retained three months |
| Premium | $12.99 | Four devices, DVR retained nine months |
Annual pricing is also available: $83.88 for Basic, $95.88 for Classic, and $119.88 for Premium. DVR starts with Classic; Basic does not include it. Premium does not preserve recordings forever—its retention period is up to nine months.
Frndly TV is not intended for major sports, broad local coverage, or a large news lineup. It works best as a cheap replacement for a small cable package, especially when its particular channels are the ones a household already watches.
Best Value
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
How to choose the right service
- Check the exact local lineup. Enter the same ZIP code on each service and write down the actual ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and CW affiliates shown. A national channel count cannot answer this question.
- Search for the documentary channels you use. Check the channel list for Discovery, HISTORY, A&E, National Geographic, Smithsonian, BBC America, and any specialist network you consider essential. “100+ channels” does not mean all of those networks are included.
- Test a real program or event. Search for the exact documentary, live broadcast, or sports event you intend to watch. Rights restrictions and blackouts can prevent a service from showing an event even when it carries the network involved.
- Calculate the normal bill. Add DVR upgrades, sports fees, Gemini lease charges, taxes, premium channels, and the price after any introductory promotion ends.
- Match the DVR to your habits. YouTube TV’s capacity is unlimited but recordings expire. Hulu and Fubo retain recordings for nine months, Philo for one year, and Frndly TV for three or nine months depending on plan.
- Check household streaming limits. Three streams is standard for YouTube TV, Hulu allows two on its standard plan, Sling varies from one to four with Orange restrictions, and Philo allows three.
Our testing verdict
Choose YouTube TV if you want one dependable service for documentaries, local news, national news, sports, and family viewing. Choose Philo if local stations and major sports do not matter and you want to spend far less. Choose Sling if you are prepared to check the channel grid and build a smaller package. Choose Hulu + Live TV when the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN bundle is part of the value. Fubo and DIRECTV make more sense for particular sports or broad traditional-TV requirements, while Frndly TV is best as a narrowly focused low-cost package.
