OBS Studio is the best starting point for creators who want free, open-source software and control over scenes, sources, and audio. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if guided setup and bundled creator tools matter more than maximum configuration. Neither is the universal winner: choose based on your format, streaming destinations, computer, operating system, and whether paid convenience features are worth it.
What the best live streaming software needs to do
For a documentary or other video-led channel, software choice affects more than whether you can press “Go Live.” You need a way to assemble video, graphics, and audio into a scene; send the right output to your platform; and keep the production within what your computer can encode smoothly. Consider these factors before choosing:
- Control: Do you want to build scenes and manage sources and audio yourself, or start with guided setup and built-in tools?
- Format: Are you making a conventional horizontal stream, a vertical live feed, or both?
- Destinations: Which platforms do you need, and do you need to stream to more than one at once?
- Computer and operating system: Compatibility does not guarantee that your machine can encode a demanding scene at your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Total cost: Compare what you would actually pay for the features you plan to use, not just the initial download.
OBS Studio: best for production control without a software fee
OBS Studio is free and open-source software for video recording and live streaming, according to the OBS Project. It supports scene-based production with a range of source types, transitions, audio filters, and VST support. That flexibility suits creators who want to assemble a documentary-style broadcast from video, titles, images, and audio, and who are comfortable configuring the production themselves.
Compatibility and performance
The OBS download page lists support for Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux installation options; check the current download page for the applicable installer and details. These are compatibility statements, not a promise that every supported computer can encode every scene smoothly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS says encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect hardware demand. Its Auto Configuration Wizard is a practical starting point for selecting settings. Begin with a simple scene, then test the full production—including video playback, titles, transitions, and audio—before a scheduled broadcast. If frames drop or the picture stutters, reduce the workload or adjust output settings rather than assuming the application itself is incompatible.

How to choose between OBS and Streamlabs
| What matters to you | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scene, source, and audio control; open-source software | OBS Studio | It offers configurable production features and is free and open source. |
| Guided onboarding and built-in creator tools | Streamlabs Desktop | Its workflow bundles setup guidance and tools such as widgets, themes, and alerts. |
| Simultaneous streams or a specific platform combination | Verify both products against your destinations | Availability and plan restrictions depend on current vendor terms and account eligibility. |
| Horizontal and vertical live formats | Choose by output layout and destination needs | YouTube distinguishes horizontal live streams from vertical live feeds; plan the scene for the format you intend to publish. |
YouTube explains the distinction between horizontal and vertical live streams. A layout designed for a wide frame may not work well when cropped or composed vertically, so settle the intended format before arranging titles and footage.
There is no reliable basis here to claim that one of these applications uses fewer resources or performs better on the same computer. Actual results depend on the encoder, settings, scene, and hardware. Choose the interface and workflow that fit, then test your own production.

Plan a documentary-style stream before going live
- Confirm the destination and format. Check the platform’s current live-streaming requirements, whether you need horizontal or vertical output, and whether simultaneous destinations are supported under the account and plan you will use.
- Check your computer and operating system. Confirm the software supports your OS, then treat vendor hardware guidance as a starting point rather than a performance guarantee.
- Build a small test scene. Add only the video, titles, images, and audio you need. More sources and effects can increase encoding workload.
- Run a full-length rehearsal of the demanding parts. Include video playback, transitions, and the audio mix. Watch for stutter or dropped frames before relying on the setup for a scheduled program.
- Check rights and platform rules for every asset. Documentary footage, music, photographs, and clips may have separate rights or license terms. Make sure you have permission for the live use and check the destination platform’s current policies; streaming software does not grant content rights.
Optional production hardware
A physical control pad such as a Stream Deck can make repeated scene changes or production actions easier, but it is optional—not a requirement for streaming software. A 2022 UC San Diego study discusses control devices in livestream production workflows; it provides context, not a current popularity ranking. See the study on livestream equipment setups.
Microphones, webcams, capture cards, and a more capable computer are also conditional purchases. Their value depends on the production: some documentary formats use prerecorded material and do not require a camera or capture card. Streamlabs’ equipment guidance discusses webcams, microphones, and encoding capability, but assess your actual sources before buying hardware.

For a prerecorded documentary that should stay live on YouTube
OBS and Streamlabs Desktop are production applications for live broadcasts from a computer. If your goal is instead to keep an uploaded recording or playlist looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is a different workflow from producing a live scene. You can build a computer-based setup, but it requires the computer and connection to remain available.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the upload from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot supports one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not camera-based live production.
