It combines a yt-dlp-compatible URL hook, playlist-file playback, and configurable Linux hardware decoding. That makes it a practical first choice—not a guarantee of smooth 4K at 60 frames per second. Playback depends on the live stream’s available format and codec, your mpv build and configuration, and the computer’s GPU, driver, and display path.
How to choose a player for this job
A player has to do more than open a video file: it needs to handle your YouTube Live URLs or playlist workflow, and it must be able to decode the stream your system actually receives. The relevant trade-offs are interface, URL and playlist handling, and hardware-decoding support. Official documentation describes capabilities, but does not provide a controlled head-to-head 4K60 test for this exact use case.
| Player | Best fit | What the documentation does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| mpv | Minimal, configurable playback; documented URL handling through a yt-dlp-compatible hook, playlist-file playback, and Linux hardware-decoding methods. | That a particular YouTube Live URL will work, or that it will play smoothly at 4K60 on your machine. |
| VLC | A general-purpose player for people who prefer VLC’s interface and broad media and stream support. VideoLAN documents hardware decoding on most platforms. | Reliable handling of your specific YouTube playlist or better 4K60 performance than mpv. |
| Kodi | A media-center workflow. Its settings documentation describes Linux VA-API and VDPAU options. | A convenient YouTube Live playlist workflow or performance on your hardware. |
For mpv, start with the live URL and playlist you actually intend to use. If you prefer a graphical, general-purpose player, try VLC; if you want a media-center interface, consider Kodi. Neither alternative can be ranked as faster or more reliable for this workload from the documented capabilities alone.
Try mpv with your YouTube Live playlist
YouTube URL extraction and video playback are separate parts of the workflow. yt-dlp documents format selection and streaming media to standard output; mpv documents an integrated yt-dlp-compatible hook for website URLs. These general features do not guarantee compatibility with every live URL. Website behavior and player versions can change.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the actual live URL in mpv. Use the URL for the live stream or playlist you want to watch. If mpv cannot resolve it, check that the installed build has the needed URL-handling support and that the URL is still valid. Consult the mpv stable manual for its URL and playlist behavior.
- Test the playlist you plan to use. mpv documents playlist-file playback. Try the file with the same live URLs and ordering you intend to watch; successful playback of one URL does not prove every playlist entry will resolve.
- Check which format and codec are active. Do not infer the viewer’s delivered codec from YouTube’s encoder requirements. The format available to your player can vary by stream and service behavior.
- Check hardware-decoding options before setting one. mpv documents Linux VA-API and DRM methods and provides ways to inspect available hardware-decoding options. VA-API requires a supported video-output path. The appropriate method depends on your system, so do not copy a universal
hwdecsetting without checking your GPU, driver, codec, and output path. - Evaluate playback on your own system. If playback stutters, compare behavior with hardware decoding available and unavailable, where supported, and check whether the active codec can be decoded by your GPU. A player option cannot make unsupported hardware decode a codec.
What 4K60 means for YouTube Live playback
YouTube’s HLS guide covers encoder ingest—the stream sent from an encoder to YouTube. It lists H.264 or HEVC and up to 60 frames per second for that workflow. Those ingest requirements do not establish which resolution, frame rate, or codec a viewer will receive for a particular live stream. Check the actual stream available to your player rather than treating the ingest page as a playback specification.
Hardware decoding is useful only when the installed GPU, driver, player build, codec, and video-output path work together. mpv documents Linux VA-API and DRM options; Kodi documents Linux VA-API and VDPAU options. Documentation does not establish that any of these players will deliver smooth 4K60 on unspecified hardware.

Common problems and what to check
- The YouTube URL does not open: The player’s URL hook or extraction dependency may be missing, or the live URL may no longer be compatible. Check mpv’s URL-handling documentation and the current yt-dlp project documentation; test the specific live URL rather than assuming general support guarantees it.
- The playlist opens but an entry fails: Test the failing URL by itself. Playlist-file support does not guarantee that each website URL will resolve.
- Video stutters or drops frames: Check the active codec and whether your GPU and driver can decode it through the selected player and output path. A hardware-decoding method that is unavailable or incompatible will not help.
- Hardware decoding is unavailable: Inspect mpv’s reported decoding options and verify the Linux driver and video-output path. The correct method is system-dependent; do not assume VA-API, DRM, or another setting applies to every distribution and GPU.
- The stream is not delivered at 4K60: The player cannot display a format that is not available for that stream and session. YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements are not a promise about viewer playback formats.
Or let it run in the cloud
A Linux player is for watching a stream on your computer. If your goal is instead to keep your own pre-recorded video live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
