Quick recommendations
| Need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Free UK public-service TV | BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Channel 5, STV Player and S4C Clic | Official broadcaster apps with live and catch-up programming |
| Traditional TV over broadband | Freely | Designed to combine live and on-demand UK television where compatible hardware and service coverage are available |
| Premium TV without a satellite dish | Sky Stream | Channel-based interface, app aggregation and optional entertainment, cinema and sports packs |
| Short-term Sky content | NOW | Flexible passes instead of a full Sky contract |
| Sport | The rights-holder’s official service or package | Competition rights are split; no legitimate general IPTV service includes every sport |
| Films and box sets | Compare Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+ with pay-TV bundles | Standalone catalogues can be better value when you do not need live channels |
What IPTV means in the UK
IPTV means television delivered over an internet-protocol network rather than through terrestrial broadcast, satellite or traditional cable. It includes official broadcaster apps, subscription platforms, internet-delivered pay-TV boxes, free ad-supported services and unlicensed streams. Ofcom explains the technology and its regulatory context at Ofcom’s IPTV guidance.
The important distinction is not the app or the presence of an electronic programme guide. It is whether the provider has the rights to distribute the channels and programmes it supplies. A player app does not make an uploaded playlist legal.

Is IPTV legal, and do you need a TV Licence?
A legal service must have permission to distribute its content in the UK. You also need to consider how you watch it:
- A TV Licence is generally required to watch or record live television on any channel or service, including live online streams.
- A TV Licence is required for BBC iPlayer, including its on-demand programmes.
- Purely on-demand viewing on non-BBC services normally does not require a licence, provided nobody in the household watches live television.
See the TV Licensing live-TV guidance and on-demand FAQ. The colour licence costs £180 per year from 1 April 2026, according to the UK Government announcement.
Ofcom also notes that internet-delivered channels accessed through television menus may not be regulated in the same way as channels on an Ofcom-regulated electronic programme guide. Be especially cautious where children can access unsuitable material.
Best legal services by viewing need
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is the strongest choice for BBC live channels, catch-up and box sets. It requires a TV Licence and is not a replacement for commercial channels, premium films or every sports competition.

ITVX
ITVX provides ITV live and catch-up programming. Free access is ad-supported. ITVX Premium is a paid, mostly ad-free tier for on-demand viewing; live television still includes adverts under ITV’s support information. See ITV’s Premium explanation.
Channel 4, Channel 5, STV Player and S4C Clic
Channel 4, Channel 5, STV Player and S4C Clic are useful official sources for UK live, catch-up and archive programming. App branding, catalogues, advertising and paid features can change, so verify the current offer in your nation and on your device.
Freely
Freely is designed to deliver live and on-demand UK television over broadband in a traditional-TV presentation. It can reduce app-hopping for households replacing an aerial setup, but compatibility, regional availability and supported hardware matter. It is not a substitute for every premium sports or film service. Ofcom discusses Freely in its connected-TV assessment at this consultation report.
Sky Stream
Sky Stream delivers a Sky-style channel experience over broadband without a dish and aggregates supported apps. Sky’s current product information recommends at least 25 Mbps; some UHD and Dolby Atmos information specifies 30 Mbps. These are product recommendations, not a universal IPTV requirement.

Sky pricing seen in August 2026 includes Essential TV from £15 per month for new customers on a 24-month minimum term, flexible Essential at £18 per month on a 31-day option (with a £21 standard rolling price shown), and Ultimate TV from £24 per month on a new-customer 24-month offer. Prices can change, and standard rates apply after applicable promotions or minimum terms. Check Sky’s package page and the detailed product terms. Add-ons, hardware and broadband affect the total cost.
NOW
NOW is the flexible route into selected Sky entertainment, cinema and sports content. Passes, prices, simultaneous-stream rules and cancellation terms vary, so check the current offer before paying. It provides less of the full Sky ecosystem than Sky Stream but can suit short-term or event-driven viewing.
Virgin Media TV streaming products
Virgin Media TV may suit households already considering Virgin broadband and a bundled TV service. Availability, package prices and broadband requirements depend on the address and current offer, so it is less suitable for a provider-independent, streaming-only setup.
Standalone streaming platforms
Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ are complementary on-demand platforms, not complete IPTV replacements. They can be cheaper than a live-TV bundle when you mainly want films and series.

Sports: buy the rights, not a channel-count promise
Start with the competition you actually follow, then identify its UK rights-holder. Check whether the offer includes live coverage, replays, your required device, HD or UHD, simultaneous streams, blackout rules and a rolling or minimum-term price. Official options may include Sky Sports, TNT Sports, NOW, discovery+/TNT packages and DAZN where relevant. See TNT Sports and DAZN UK for their current offers.
No general legal IPTV subscription should be assumed to include every Sky Sports channel, TNT event, pay-per-view programme and international competition. “Everything for £5” is a warning sign, not proof of value.
Devices and broadband
Check the exact operating system and app listing for your television or streaming box. Support may be a native app, casting, browser access or (for unofficial software) sideloading. An app available on Android phones is not automatically available on every Android TV device. Common supported categories include Samsung and LG smart TVs, Android TV/Google TV, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, compatible Roku devices, Sky Stream, phones, tablets, browsers and some consoles.
Reliability depends on stable throughput, Wi-Fi conditions, latency and packet loss, not just a peak speed-test result. Ethernet is preferable for a fixed TV box; place the router well, account for other household traffic and check mobile-broadband data caps. Buffering may result from Wi-Fi interference, ISP congestion, overloaded authentication servers or provider capacity failure.

How to compare total cost
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Price | Promotional price, standard renewal price and date checked |
| Commitment | Rolling notice period or minimum term |
| Extras | Sports, cinema, UHD, additional screens, hardware and delivery charges |
| Connectivity | Required broadband and whether it must come from the same provider |
| Access | Supported devices, household limits and regional restrictions |
| Licence | Whether live viewing or BBC iPlayer means your household needs a TV Licence |
Red flags for unlicensed IPTV sellers
- “Every channel worldwide” or new cinema releases for an implausibly low fee.
- “Lifetime” access with no clear company identity, terms, refund policy or rights information.
- Cryptocurrency, personal-bank-account or messaging-app-only payments.
- A sideloaded APK, frequent domain changes or no official app-store presence.
- Premium sports and films offered without an identifiable rights-holder relationship.
- Promises that an EPG, VPN or player app makes the subscription legal.
Risks include sudden shutdowns, buffering during major events, payment disputes, credential theft, malware, unclear data handling and no meaningful complaints route. A VPN can change apparent network location or privacy conditions; it does not grant distribution rights or override a service’s terms.
Quick Recap
Choose by household profile
- Free-TV household: combine official broadcaster apps or compatible Freely hardware, and budget for the TV Licence if watching live channels or BBC iPlayer.
- Premium entertainment household: compare Sky Stream’s total contract cost with standalone Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+ subscriptions.
- Flexible viewer: investigate NOW’s current passes and cancellation rules rather than accepting a 24-month bundle.
- Sports household: list each required competition and buy only the verified rights-holder packages.
- Family: prioritise official apps, parental controls, content ratings and dependable account recovery over an enormous channel list.
