The best horror movie to stream depends on the scare you want—and where you live. For tense home-invasion suspense, try Hush; for a creature feature with comic relief, choose Lake Placid; and for supernatural dread, consider Hereditary. The viewing options below are based on services and territories reported in October 2026, so check your local listing before pressing play.
Pick a horror movie by the kind of scare you want
These picks draw on the October 2026 recommendations and availability reporting from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide. Plot descriptions are factual summaries; subjective assessments are attributed to the publication or reviewer. No single film is the best choice for every viewer.

Best picks for specific moods
For suspense built around silence: Hush
TechRadar describes a deaf and mute author fighting to survive when a serial killer enters her home. The setup makes Hush a natural choice for viewers who want a tightly focused home-invasion story where silence is central to the tension. TechRadar reported it on Netflix in the US from October 1, 2026, and on Shudder in the UK and Australia.
For a creature feature that does not take itself too seriously: Lake Placid
A giant crocodile terrorizes a Maine lake in this 1999 horror comedy. TechRadar presents it as a fun pick for watching with friends, making it a better fit for viewers who want creature-feature thrills with comic relief than for those seeking unrelenting dread. Its reported options are Netflix in the US from October 1, UK rental or purchase, and service 10 in Australia.

- Media Format: Blu-ray
- Studio: Universal Studios
- Country of Origin: USA
- Number of discs: 1
For a twisty rental-house setup: Barbarian
The story begins when a woman arrives at a rental home and discovers it has been double-booked. TechRadar advises going in with little prior knowledge, so avoid plot summaries if you want its surprises to land. The reported options are Hulu in the US from October 1, 2026, and rental or purchase in the UK and Australia.
For family-centered supernatural dread: Hereditary
After a woman’s mother dies, disturbing supernatural events unsettle the family. TechRadar’s summary makes this a fit for viewers who prefer creeping, emotionally rooted dread over creature-feature humor or action-driven horror. The reported options are Hulu in the US from October 1, 2026, rental or purchase in the UK, and Stan in Australia.
For viewers who want graphic franchise horror: Evil Dead Burn
TechRadar characterizes this 2026 series entry as gory and divisive. Choose it if intense gore and franchise horror are part of the appeal; it is not the gentle or broadly accessible option in this list. TechRadar reported HBO Max in the US from October 5, 2026, with rental or purchase in the UK and Australia.
For bloody zombie action: 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Tom’s Guide links this recent post-apocalyptic zombie story to Netflix and warns that it is gory. It suits viewers looking for violent, bloody horror rather than a quiet supernatural story. The October 4 report does not specify a country, so confirm the title appears in your own Netflix catalog.
Rank #3
For supernatural scares with dark humor: Obsession
Obsession revolves around a wish that goes wrong. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer calls it entertaining and points to spooky moments and dark humor; those are the reviewer’s judgments, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way. Tom’s Guide links it to Peacock but does not specify territory.
For a scare-first Halloween watch: Hokum
Tom’s Guide’s author recommends Hokum to viewers seeking a scare-forward supernatural pick. The article links to Prime Video for buy or rent, not a subscription-included viewing option, and does not state the territory.
Rank #4

A boss and employee are stranded together in this horror-thriller crossover. Tom’s Guide recommends it for viewers who want thriller elements as well as horror; it links to Hulu without specifying territory.

The same film can be included with a subscription in one country and available only to rent or buy in another. The table separates those reported access types where the source gives enough detail. Tom’s Guide’s service links for the three 2026 picks do not establish the territory or whether every link is subscription-included, so check the linked local listing for the exact option before paying.
Best Value
- Start with your country. A US Netflix or Hulu listing does not establish availability in the UK or Australia.
- Check the access type. A title listed for rental or purchase is not necessarily included in a service subscription.
- Verify current availability. Streaming catalogs and rights change; October 2026 listings describe reported availability at that time, not a permanent guarantee.
For Netflix’s own US catalog, its official Essential Horror Flicks page is a direct place to check. Rotten Tomatoes’ Horror Movies to Stream at Home browse page offers service filters. Its critics’ and audience-score labels are distinct, so do not read one as the other.
Why older horror belongs alongside new releases
A current-year release is not automatically a better choice than a library title. Carbon Arc reported that over half of its top horror streaming titles in 2025 were older titles; it did not give an exact percentage. The same report contrasted this with October 2024, when only one of its top ten was more than three years old. That observation supports considering both newer releases and older films such as Lake Placid, but it does not predict which one you will enjoy most.
Netflix’s official US horror page puts the at-home appeal this way: “How do you make horror movies even more terrifying? By watching them at home in the dark.”
