For a heavier step up from a standard 5A, start by comparing 5B drumsticks; for substantially more mass and a wider grip, compare 2B. If you want an in-between option, Vater positions its Cool Breeze between 5B and 2B/Rock. No size is universally best: diameter, length, taper, tip, wood, balance, and hand fit all affect whether a heavy stick feels powerful and remains controllable.
Which heavy drumstick size should you try?
Size labels are useful starting points, not guarantees that different brands will have identical dimensions or feel. ProMark describes 5B as heavier than 5A and suitable for harder playing; 2B is its extra-heavy, extra-wide option for hard hitters and larger hands. Its size guide also places 7A on the lighter, smaller end and 5A in the medium range (ProMark’s drumstick guide).
| Option | Manufacturer positioning | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ProMark 5B | Heavier than 5A; intended for harder playing. | Actual diameter and length, taper, tip, wood, and grip comfort. |
| ProMark 2B | Extra heavy and extra wide; intended for hardest hitters and larger hands. | Whether the wider grip and added mass remain comfortable and controllable. |
| Vater Cool Breeze | Bridges the gap between 5B and 2B/Rock; Vater specifies 16 5/8 inches long and .600 inches in diameter. | Whether its larger diameter and added length suit your hands and reach. |
| Vater Xtreme Design 5B | Vater presents it as a 5B option for extreme playing, with increased weight and durability. | Its exact specifications and feel; a 5B label does not make it identical to another brand’s 5B. |
The Cool Breeze dimensions and intended use are manufacturer specifications and positioning, not an independent comparison (Vater model information). A 5B can be a sensible first comparison if you want more mass without immediately moving to the particularly wide 2B profile.
How to choose a heavy stick you can still control
Diameter and length
Diameter is a primary factor in how a stick feels in the hand, according to ProMark; length and weight matter too. ProMark’s guidance says shorter, lighter sticks produce a more delicate sound and may take more effort to play loudly, while longer, heavier sticks can produce greater intensity with less effort. These are general manufacturer guidelines, not a promise that every player or setup will respond the same way (ProMark’s drumstick guide).

Compare actual measurements where manufacturers provide them, especially if a model name sounds familiar. A thicker grip may feel secure to one player and cumbersome to another; added length can change reach as well as leverage.
Taper and balance
Taper—the transition from the thicker shaft toward the tip—and the stick’s balance affect how it moves. Vater says a short taper tends toward a front-heavy feel and power, while a medium taper balances the butt and tip. The right balance is a matter of the response you want, not simply the heaviest stick available (Vater’s stick-selection guide).

Tip and wood
Tip shape affects the sound at impact, while wood influences density, weight, resonance, texture, and flexibility. ProMark describes maple as lightweight and quick-playing, hickory as a popular choice, persimmon as strong and resistant to flex, and Shira Kashi oak as dense and durable. Those are material characteristics described by the manufacturer, not a ranking of what will sound best on your drums (ProMark’s drumstick guide; Vater’s stick-selection guide).
What heavy sticks can—and cannot—do
Extra mass can help produce a forceful sound, and a larger-diameter stick may better suit a player who wants a wider grip. But heavier does not automatically mean more precise, faster, or more durable in every player’s hands. Precision depends on maintaining relaxed, repeatable control; if a stick makes your grip tense or your strokes less consistent, its added weight is working against your goal.

Vater says thicker sticks are heavier and more durable, and markets the Xtreme Design 5B for extreme playing. The manufacturer’s product page also reproduces a positive testimonial attributed to Modern Drummer Magazine, but that promotional quotation is not a controlled, comparative breakage test (Vater Xtreme Design 5B Wood). The available manufacturer information does not establish a comparative lifespan or breakage rate, so treat durability claims as positioning rather than a guarantee.
A practical way to compare candidates
- Choose a starting size. Compare 5B if you want a heavier step from 5A; compare 2B if you want a substantially heavier, wider grip. Consider an intermediate model such as Cool Breeze if neither seems like a natural fit.
- Check the measurements. Look up each model’s diameter and length rather than relying only on its size label. Compare the numbers against a stick you already find comfortable, if available.
- Assess the feel. Where possible, hold or try the stick. Notice whether the diameter is comfortable, whether the balance supports your strokes, and whether you can play quietly as well as forcefully without gripping harder.
- Match the sound and response. Consider taper, tip shape, and wood alongside mass. These characteristics change feel and sound; a heavier stick alone does not determine either.
- Reassess under the playing you actually do. A stick that feels powerful for loud passages may be tiring or less controlled in longer sessions or quieter playing. Choose the one that lets you maintain the control your music requires.
How to make the final choice
For many players seeking more weight, 5B is the logical first comparison; 2B is for those who want an extra-heavy, wider profile and whose hands can manage it comfortably. A model such as Vater Cool Breeze offers a manufacturer-positioned middle ground. Compare exact dimensions, balance, and grip feel, then prioritize consistent control over the promise of extra power. MusicRadar’s guide identifies Vic Firth, Vater, Zildjian, and ProMark among major drumstick brands, but its recommendations are editorial selections rather than a standardized comparative test (MusicRadar’s drumstick guide).
