There is no universal best preset for streaming games. Start with the limits and recommendations of your streaming platform, choose an output resolution and frame rate your stable upload and encoder can sustain, and leave the game enough CPU or GPU headroom to run smoothly. Test fast gameplay with audio before broadcasting; if the stream stutters or OBS reports encoding overload, lower the stream output or reduce the game’s load.
Keep game FPS separate from stream FPS
Game FPS is how many frames your computer renders for play. Stream FPS is how many frames your encoder sends to the platform. Your game can render at a higher rate than the stream—for example, a game running above 60 FPS can still be sent as a 60 FPS stream.
Higher stream resolution and FPS demand more from the encoder and connection. Fast movement, detailed foliage, and frequent camera turns can also be harder to encode than static menus. Choose a stream target based on the platform’s guidance, your upload capacity, and how well your system handles representative gameplay, rather than assuming the highest available setting is best.
Choose platform, resolution, FPS, and bitrate
YouTube Live recommendations
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion at up to 60 FPS. It recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and RTMPS. The bitrate figures below are YouTube recommendations, not hard minimums or guarantees of quality. They apply to YouTube, not Twitch. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also notes that live streams are transcoded into formats for viewers on different devices and connections.

| Stream output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 FPS | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 FPS | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 FPS | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 FPS | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 FPS | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
Use the row for your intended output and the column for the codec your encoder actually sends. Do not use a YouTube number as a Twitch limit. For Twitch, check its current guidance for the account and setup you use; exact current limits are not established here. Twitch search-result guidance favors CBR when possible, but does not support a reliable current bitrate table.
Match the target to your upload
Run an upload speed test on the connection you will stream from. Select a platform-recommended bitrate that the connection can sustain with margin for normal variation and other household or office traffic. A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that upload capacity will remain steady during a broadcast. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the target, step down to a lower resolution, FPS, or bitrate within the platform’s guidance.

Do not assume a bitrate chart from another platform applies to yours. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and platform ingest guidance all affect the appropriate choice. OBS likewise cautions that there is no single best setting and that fast-motion material can need different treatment from low-motion content. OBS’s x264 streaming guidance gives an older example of 5,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p30 using x264 veryfast under low-to-medium motion; it notes that high-motion 1080p60 may require more than 8,000 kbps in those example conditions. Treat that as contextual OBS guidance, not a current universal platform limit.
Balance image quality against game and encoder load
Set stream output before tuning game graphics
Begin with a resolution and FPS combination your platform supports and your connection can carry. Then test with the game running as you intend to play it. If the encoder cannot keep up, lower stream output resolution or FPS first. OBS says an overloaded system can produce skipping or distortion and may show “Encoding overloaded!” If you use x264 CPU encoding and still see overload after reducing output, OBS suggests considering a faster x264 preset.

Give the game enough GPU headroom
If the game is consuming nearly all available GPU time, capture and encoding can fall behind even when the stream target itself looks reasonable. NVIDIA’s guide says Windows may prioritize the game over other work when GPU utilization is above 95%; this is NVIDIA’s guidance, not a universal threshold for every system. Its suggested remedies include capping in-game FPS, lowering game graphics or resolution, and enabling V-Sync. NVIDIA’s broadcasting guide also identifies borderless windowed mode as an option for reducing GPU contention.
Try one change at a time. If uncapped game FPS is saturating the GPU, cap it near a rate the system can sustain while streaming, then check whether capture and stream playback become smooth. If they do not, reduce demanding game graphics settings or game resolution, or lower the stream output. The goal is stable play and a clean stream, not the highest game FPS counter or graphics preset in isolation.

Choose an encoder that fits your hardware
Hardware encoders can reduce reliance on CPU encoding resources. OBS’s general guidance names NVENC, Quick Sync, and AMD VCE as dedicated hardware encoders, while NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated physical section of its GPUs. Encoder availability and quality depend on the hardware and software setup; do not treat older general comparisons as a current head-to-head benchmark.
NVIDIA’s recommendations are specific to its GPUs and platform guidance: H.264 NVENC for Twitch, AV1 NVENC for YouTube on RTX 40-series, and HEVC NVENC for YouTube on other NVIDIA setups named in its guide. These are not universal recommendations for AMD or Intel hardware, or for every version of streaming software. Verify that the selected codec is supported by both your encoder and platform before using a codec-specific bitrate.

Test before going live
- Choose the platform, encoder, codec, output resolution, FPS, and bitrate. For YouTube, begin with its current recommendations and the CBR, keyframe, and RTMPS guidance above.
- Check upload speed on the connection you will use, and leave room for fluctuations and other network activity.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test using actual gameplay, including fast movement and the audio you will use on stream.
- Watch the stream health indicators and the viewer-side playback. Note whether the problem is dropped or delayed stream output, encoding overload, or the game itself becoming unstable.
- Change one setting at a time, test again, and keep the combination that remains stable during representative play.
YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health during the event as well as during pre-stream tests. YouTube Help
Fix common streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS displays “Encoding overloaded!” | The encoder cannot keep up with the chosen output settings or workload. | Lower output resolution or FPS. If using x264 CPU encoding, consider a faster preset. Test after each change. OBS guidance |
| Stream skips or distorts while the game runs smoothly | Encoding or rendering headroom may be insufficient. | Reduce stream output resolution or FPS. If the game is monopolizing GPU time, cap in-game FPS or reduce graphics settings and retest. OBS; NVIDIA |
| Stream quality or continuity varies | Upload capacity may be unstable or shared with other traffic. | Retest upload speed on the streaming connection, reduce the target bitrate or output settings to a sustainable platform-recommended option, and monitor stream health. |
| Settings do not match platform ingest guidance | The selected codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, or protocol may not fit the platform. | Check the platform’s current encoder guidance rather than reusing another service’s settings. For YouTube, verify codec-specific bitrate, CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), and RTMPS. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of pre-recorded gameplay or other uploaded video, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a game-capture setup.
