The best free VTuber setup depends first on your avatar: use VTube Studio to track a Live2D Cubism model, or create a 3D avatar in VRoid Studio and animate its VRM file with a compatible tracker such as VSeeFace. Use OBS Studio to build scenes, mix audio and send the finished broadcast to your streaming platform. These apps handle different jobs, so OBS is not a replacement for avatar tracking, and VTube Studio is not a VRM tracker.
Which free VTuber software should you choose?
| Your starting point | Free-first workflow | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a Live2D Cubism model | VTube Studio → OBS Studio | VTube Studio does not load VRM or VRoid models; some features are limited in its free version. |
| You want to make a 3D avatar | VRoid Studio → a VRM-compatible tracker such as VSeeFace → OBS Studio | VRoid Studio creates the avatar; you still need a separate tracking app. Check current operating-system and model compatibility. |
| You already have an animated avatar and need broadcast scenes | OBS Studio | OBS captures and mixes sources; it does not create or animate a VTuber model. |
This is a role-based guide, not a performance ranking. The available product documentation does not establish comparative scores for tracking accuracy, ease of use or performance.
How the software roles fit together
Avatar creation
VRoid Studio is a free tool for creating customizable 3D characters, including editing textures. It is useful if you need to make a 3D avatar rather than track an existing Live2D model. Check the applicable terms for exported models and any downloaded clothing, props or other third-party assets; the app being free does not determine the rights attached to every asset.
Tracking and animation
VTube Studio animates Live2D Cubism models using a webcam or smartphone. Its documentation says it supports Live2D, not VRM/VRoid models. For a VRoid character exported as VRM, use a tracker that accepts VRM; VSeeFace is described as a free option for this workflow in a secondary comparison, so verify its current compatibility and operating-system support before setting it up.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Scenes, audio and broadcast
OBS Studio is the broadcast and recording layer. It combines sources such as windows, images, text, webcams or capture devices, and games into scenes, then handles streaming or recording. OBS is free and open source; its help portal says it has no watermark or feature limitations.
Set up a Live2D stream with VTube Studio and OBS
- Confirm the model format. Use a Live2D Cubism model with VTube Studio. If your avatar is VRM/VRoid, choose a VRM-compatible tracker instead; VTube Studio is not the right loader for that format.
- Choose a tracking device. VTube Studio supports a webcam or smartphone tracking. For webcam eye and blink tracking, its requirements documentation recommends 1280×720 or higher and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient for good tracking. A compatible phone is an alternative, so a new webcam is optional rather than a requirement.
- Install VTube Studio and load the model. Follow the current VTube Studio documentation and in-app prompts to add your Live2D model and select the tracking input. Confirm that facial movement is being detected before moving to the broadcast setup.
- Install OBS Studio and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, use Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a starting configuration for your computer and streaming needs. The wizard is a starting point, not a substitute for a test broadcast.
- Create a scene and add the avatar output. In the OBS Sources area, add the VTube Studio output using the capture method supported by your setup. Arrange it with any other sources you need, such as a background, text, game capture or webcam.
- Check audio and stream destination. Select the intended microphone and other audio inputs, then configure the streaming service and stream key in OBS using that service’s current instructions. Treat the stream key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.
- Test before going live. Check that the avatar tracks, the scene is framed correctly, audio meters respond, and the stream preview looks right. Make a short test recording or private test stream where available, then correct problems before a public broadcast.
Set up a 3D VTuber stream with VRoid and a VRM tracker
- Create the avatar in VRoid Studio. Customize the character and export it in a format accepted by your tracker, commonly VRM. Check the tracker’s current import requirements and the applicable terms for any assets you use.
- Choose a compatible tracking app. Use a tracker that explicitly accepts your exported VRM model. VSeeFace is one free option described for this workflow, but check its current OS support and import instructions rather than assuming every VRM file or computer is compatible.
- Set up tracking and test movement. Select the available camera or tracking input in the tracker, load the avatar, and confirm that facial movement is being detected. Adjust framing and expression settings in the tracker before capturing it in OBS.
- Build the OBS scene. Add the tracker’s avatar output and any other desired sources to an OBS scene, check the microphone and other audio inputs, and configure your streaming destination and key using its current instructions.
- Run a test. Confirm that the avatar is visible and responsive, the scene is composed correctly, and audio is clear before starting a public stream.
What “free” means in practice
- OBS Studio: OBS describes itself as free and open source. Its official help portal says it may be used for any reason under GPLv2, with no watermark or feature limitations.
- VRoid Studio: The software is free to use. Separate costs or usage terms may apply to models, exported assets or third-party items.
- VTube Studio: It can be used as a free demo, but free and PRO features differ. The official FAQ and current store listing should be checked for the exact feature limits and platform-specific terms; the FAQ identifies examples such as phone-to-PC streaming longer than five minutes and removing the app logo as PRO features.
- Other needs: Depending on your setup, you may need a compatible phone or webcam, an avatar, a paid feature or third-party assets. The software workflow can start without buying a webcam if you have a compatible phone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube video live around the clock rather than perform as a tracked avatar, StreamNeo is a different tool for that job: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera tracking or avatar capture. See how StreamNeo works, or start the free day.
