Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a free local setup, use OBS Studio: its VLC Video source rotates multiple video files, while its built-in Media Source loops a single file. To schedule when the YouTube broadcast appears, use YouTube Studio separately. Those are two different jobs: OBS plays and encodes your files; YouTube schedules and hosts the live event.
What “schedule a rotating playlist” can mean
There are two meanings to separate before choosing a tool:
- Arrange and repeat videos: create a local playlist that plays files in sequence or shuffle and loops back to the start. OBS handles this playback.
- Schedule the live event: create an upcoming YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio so viewers can find and be notified about it. YouTube scheduling does not create or rotate the local playlist.
For the most straightforward free workflow, use OBS Studio and YouTube Studio together. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe getting the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, entering them in the encoder, then starting the encoder and going live (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
Best free tools for rotating local videos
OBS Studio: VLC Video for a playlist of files
OBS Studio’s VLC Video source is the clearest documented free option for multiple local videos. You can add files in the order you want, loop the playlist, and optionally shuffle it. VLC must be installed separately; OBS specifies a matching 64-bit VLC installation when using 64-bit OBS. The source is documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match VLC’s 64-bit architecture to 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, select the scene where the playlist should appear, then click + in the Sources box and choose VLC Video.
- Name the source and add the local media files in the intended order.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart from the beginning after the last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order; it is off by default.
- Confirm the source is visible in the active scene and check playback in the OBS preview before connecting to YouTube.
OBS’s VLC source stops when hidden and restarts when shown by default. Switching scenes can therefore interrupt or restart playback; do not assume that it will continue seamlessly in the background.
OBS Studio: Media Source for one looping file
For a single video, use OBS’s built-in Media Source rather than installing VLC for a playlist. Add the source to a scene, select the file, and turn on Loop; looping is off by default. This source is intended for one file at a time, not a rotating list.
The OBS documentation lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. The page is dated January 11, 2022, so if a file fails to load, check the current OBS documentation and try a supported, compatible export format.

Schedule and start the YouTube livestream
Use YouTube Studio for the event and OBS for the outgoing video feed. YouTube says scheduling a stream lets you promote it; the scheduled event does not itself play local files. Follow YouTube’s current encoder and scheduling instructions for the Live Control Room interface.
- In YouTube Studio, open Create and choose Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Under Manage, schedule a stream. Reuse prior settings or create a new event, then set the event details and scheduled time.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream credentials as prompted. Keep the key private.
- Return to the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Start streaming from OBS so YouTube receives the encoder feed, then use YouTube’s event controls to start the broadcast at the scheduled time. Confirm the preview and stream status before going live.
First-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified, must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Check the current YouTube live-streaming requirements if access is unavailable.
Keep rights, archives, and playlist types straight
- Use media you have the rights to broadcast. Check rights for every video, music track, image, and other element in the stream, and comply with YouTube’s content policies. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction; this workflow is not legal advice.
- A YouTube playlist is not an OBS playlist. YouTube playlist management organizes videos already on YouTube. OBS VLC Video plays local files into the encoder feed. See YouTube’s playlist-management instructions.
- Do not count on an indefinite broadcast being fully archived. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish full archiving for a 24/7 stream.
Common problems and fixes
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources
OBS may not detect VLC if it is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS and check the + source menu again.

The playlist stops at the last item
Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist. If you expect a fixed sequence, also make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
The wrong video order plays
Review the VLC Video source’s media list and arrange the files in the intended order. If random order is not wanted, disable Shuffle Playlist.

Playback restarts after a scene change
By default, VLC Video stops when hidden and restarts when visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene or plan scene changes around that behavior; the documented setting is not a guarantee of seamless background playback.

YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube service and that the stream URL/key correspond to the scheduled event. Confirm OBS is actively streaming and that Live Control Room shows an incoming preview before starting the broadcast.
A scheduled event exists, but no playlist is playing
Scheduling creates the YouTube event, not the media playback. Add and test a Media Source or VLC Video source in OBS, then connect OBS to the event with its stream credentials.

If leaving a computer running locally is not practical for continuous prerecorded streaming, investigate hosted services instead of treating the local setup as a 24/7 solution. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video (YouTube’s encoder directory). That listing establishes them as candidates, not as a YouTube endorsement or a comparison of their current prices, playlist editing, schedules, or recovery behavior; check those details with each provider.
