Best FFmpeg Settings for Constant Frame Rate YouTube Playlist Videos

Preserve each source video’s frame rate for YouTube unless a workflow requires CFR. These FFmpeg commands show how to convert deliberately and what to check afterward.

For YouTube uploads, the best starting point is to keep each video at the frame rate it was recorded. YouTube does not require one universal constant frame rate (CFR). If a downstream workflow requires CFR, FFmpeg can encode to a chosen rate by duplicating or dropping frames—but choose that rate deliberately and check the result.

“Playlist videos” can mean separate uploads grouped in a YouTube playlist, or several clips combined into one file. Those are different workflows: playlist membership does not require every entry to share a frame rate; a combined video needs a single output cadence.

Choose the frame rate before encoding

YouTube’s upload guidance says to encode and upload content at the rate used during recording. Its common examples are 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps; other rates are accepted. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recognizes fractional rates such as 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps. YouTube: Recommended upload encoding settings · YouTube: Troubleshoot video and audio quality

  • One source rate, no workflow constraint: Preserve the source rate. This avoids unnecessary frame duplication or omission.
  • A required CFR deliverable: Set the required target rate and encode to it. The target is a workflow requirement, not a YouTube-wide best rate.
  • Mixed-rate clips in one compilation: Select one output rate for the combined file. Clips with a different cadence will need conversion; inspect motion and synchronization afterward.

Changing frame cadence can make motion look less smooth: conversion to a higher rate may repeat frames, while conversion to a lower rate may omit them. YouTube cautions that resampling can cause shudder and reduce quality. YouTube’s format specifications

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use this FFmpeg command as a starting point

This example creates a progressive H.264 MP4 with AAC audio and forces 30 fps. Replace 30 with the source rate or the rate required by your workflow. The CRF and preset are illustrative encoder choices, not YouTube-mandated values.

ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
  -c:v libx264 -profile:v high -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -fps_mode:v cfr -crf 18 -preset medium
  -c:a aac -b:a 384k -ar 48000
  -movflags +faststart output.mp4
  1. Replace the input and output names. input.mov is the source file; output.mp4 is the encoded result.
  2. Choose the output rate. Replace 30 with the intended rate, including a fractional rate where appropriate. Do not choose 30 fps just because it appears in the example.
  3. Encode rather than stream-copy. The video encoder and CFR mode let FFmpeg change frame cadence. Stream copy does not perform that conversion.
  4. Review the output. Check fast motion, cuts, and audio/video synchronization, especially when the source rate differs from the target.

FFmpeg’s -fps_mode:v cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach the requested constant rate. Output -r during encoding also affects frame cadence; with stream copy, -r only signals a rate and does not transform the frames. Check the manual for the FFmpeg build installed on your system, since option support and behavior are version-dependent. FFmpeg documentation: ffmpeg

Alternative: convert with the fps filter

The fps filter is another explicit way to convert to a target cadence:

ffmpeg -i input.mov -vf "fps=30"
  -c:v libx264 -profile:v high -pix_fmt yuv420p
-crf 18 -preset medium -c:a aac -ar 48000
  output.mp4

As with the first command, substitute the intended rate for 30. The filter duplicates or drops frames to produce that rate. Use either this filter-based conversion or the output CFR options as the conversion approach; avoid stacking competing frame-rate conversions without a clear reason. FFmpeg documentation: fps filter

YouTube’s reference bitrates for SDR

These are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory limits or guarantees of a particular result. YouTube says uploads have no required bitrate limit; resolution and frame-rate class affect the reference values. The figures below are for SDR. YouTube upload encoding recommendations

Resolution Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps)
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps

For resolutions other than 1080p, consult YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating from these figures. The sample command uses CRF-based encoding and therefore does not set a fixed target bitrate.

Separate playlist entries or one combined video?

Separate uploads in a YouTube playlist

Encode each entry to match its own recorded frame rate where possible. A playlist groups videos; it does not itself impose a shared frame rate. There is no need to convert otherwise suitable uploads just to make their rates match.

One rendered compilation from multiple clips

A single output file needs one output cadence. If re-encoding is appropriate, FFmpeg’s concat filter can join clips and apply processing. The concat demuxer may avoid re-encoding when the files are suitable and compatible. These methods have different requirements, so use the FFmpeg documentation for the chosen method and verify the result rather than assuming mixed sources will join cleanly. Common problems and fixes

  • The output is still not CFR: Confirm that the file was encoded, not stream-copied, and that the installed FFmpeg supports the options used. Use one conversion method and inspect the output’s reported frame rate.
  • Motion looks jerky after conversion: The target may not fit the source cadence. Return to the recorded rate if no workflow requires conversion, or try the required target and inspect the affected scenes.
  • Audio and video drift: Check synchronization across the full duration after changing cadence or combining sources; do not assume a successful encode guarantees sync.
  • Clips do not concatenate cleanly: The concat demuxer is not a universal no-reencode join. If source files are incompatible, use a re-encoding workflow such as the concat filter and normalize the properties needed by that workflow.
  • Upload settings seem inconsistent: Do not apply YouTube’s live-stream CBR and live keyframe guidance to a prerecorded upload. Use the upload recommendations, which describe VBR and have no required bitrate limit.
  • Color looks wrong: Check the source color space and metadata, then tag or convert only as appropriate for the actual master. A generic BT.709 tag is not a substitute for checking the footage.

Or let it run in the cloud

FFmpeg is for preparing a prerecorded upload. If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud workflow: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
