Before choosing between locking and conventional tuners, check the peg-hole diameter, string-post dimensions, and screw pattern: a feature-rich set is not an upgrade if it does not fit your guitar.
“Tuning keys” are also called tuning pegs, machine heads, or tuning machines. They adjust string tension to bring the strings to pitch. The examples below illustrate different acoustic 3+3 options, not a universal ranking; the cited specifications are manufacturer or retailer information, not independent comparative test results.
What to check before buying replacement tuners
Start with the guitar, not the product feature list. Electric-acoustic guitars can have different headstock layouts and mounting dimensions, so a replacement set should be checked against the hardware already installed.
- Headstock layout: Confirm whether the guitar uses three tuners on each side (3+3), another arrangement, or a slotted peghead format.
- Peg-hole diameter: Measure the existing holes or confirm the instrument specification. A tuner’s stated hole size must match, or the retrofit may require suitable conversion bushings.
- Post dimensions: Compare the string-post dimensions with the guitar’s existing tuners and the replacement specification.
- Mounting footprint: Check screw-hole positions and any mounting plates. Existing holes may not align with a new set.
- Included hardware: Check whether bushings, screws, or mounting plates are supplied and whether they suit the intended installation.
StewMac’s acoustic tuner listings and guidance emphasize checking peg-hole size and footprint. Some retrofits use conversion bushings, but their availability does not make every replacement compatible.

Locking tuners versus conventional tuners
Conventional tuning machines secure a string with wraps around the post. Locking tuners clamp the string at the post, reducing the need for multiple wraps. Fender notes that guitarists often use locking tuners, especially with a tremolo bridge or vibrato arm.
Locking describes how the string is held at the tuner; it does not establish that a set will fit a particular guitar or resolve every cause of tuning trouble. Compare the mechanism only after confirming the layout and mounting dimensions.

Acoustic 3+3 tuner examples
These two manufacturer-listed examples illustrate different mechanisms and gear specifications. Neither is established as a better-performing choice by controlled comparative testing.

The ratios describe different design approaches; the figures alone do not prove one set is superior. StewMac’s broader acoustic selection also includes locking and non-locking 3+3 sets, 3-on-plate sets, and tuners for slotted pegheads. Those formats are not interchangeable without checking the guitar’s layout and installation requirements.

Check tuning problems before replacing hardware
A guitar that goes out of tune does not automatically need new tuning machines. Fender identifies loose string winding, worn or stripped gears, and tuners that are not firmly anchored as possible causes.
- Inspect the string windings. Fender notes that insufficiently tight winding can allow strings to go flat during playing.
- Check whether each tuner is firmly anchored. A machine head that is not securely mounted can affect tuning stability.
- Look for signs of gear wear. Worn or stripped gears may give or slip; replacement may be appropriate if the mechanism is damaged.
- Replace only after confirming fit. Match the new set’s layout, holes, posts, and mounting footprint to the guitar.
Replacing tuners cannot be assumed to fix a problem caused by loose windings or another issue elsewhere in the instrument.

How to choose
- Choose a locking set if you prefer a string-clamping mechanism and have confirmed that its dimensions and mounting pattern suit the guitar.
- Consider a set with mounting plates if the supplied plate arrangement is designed to use the guitar’s existing screw holes; verify that those holes match.
- For an unusual headstock or retrofit, compare specialist formats such as 3-on-plate or slotted-peghead tuners and check whether appropriate conversion bushings are available.
- Do not choose by gear ratio alone. Published ratios are useful specifications, but they are not comparative tuning-stability or durability test results.
Because the guitar’s make, model, production year, and existing tuner dimensions are unspecified, no exact compatible replacement can be identified here. Measure the installed hardware or consult the guitar’s specifications before ordering.
