Kairi Sane offers a distinctive modern contrast, with a diving elbow she developed into her finisher. “Best” depends on what matters most—signature identity, presentation, storytelling or originality—so no single ranking settles the debate.
How to judge an elbow drop
An elbow drop is a simple move to describe: a wrestler falls onto a grounded opponent and strikes with the elbow. Its impact in a match depends on more than the mechanics. The performer’s setup, the audience’s anticipation and the move’s role in the story can make a familiar attack feel decisive.
- Signature identity: Is the move closely associated with the wrestler?
- Presentation: Does the approach make the audience anticipate the landing?
- Storytelling: Does the move feel like a meaningful turning point or finish?
- Distinctiveness: Does the performer give the move a recognizable variation or personal meaning?
These are useful comparison points, not an official or objective scoring system. WWE’s list is an editorial ranking, not a cross-promotion measurement of every wrestler’s skill.
Randy Savage: the clearest historical benchmark
Savage has the strongest case when the question is which wrestler is most identified with the move. WWE’s profile names “Elbow drop off the top rope” as his signature. WWE also ranked his top-rope elbow sixth in its 2014 feature, “The 50 coolest maneuvers of all time,” praising its dramatic build and use as a finishing attack.

The move’s appeal was in the anticipation as much as the landing: Savage climbed to the top rope, made the audience wait, then delivered the elbow as a decisive attack. That theatrical build makes the elbow drop feel like a complete piece of match storytelling rather than merely a strike.
A showcase against Ricky Steamboat
Savage’s WrestleMania III match with Ricky Steamboat is a useful example of the move in a high-profile match. ESPN’s 2017 oral history describes Savage landing a flying elbow from the top rope. The match is remembered for more than that single moment, but the elbow gives Savage’s signature attack a clear place in the match’s drama.

A fellow wrestler’s recollection
Diamond Dallas Page recalled taking Savage’s elbow drop during their WCW work and said Savage got notable height even at age 44. That is Page’s personal recollection, not a measured comparison of jump height or technique, but it speaks to the impression Savage’s execution made on a fellow performer.
Kairi Sane: a distinctive diving variation
Kairi Sane’s case is different from Savage’s. In a 2017 interview reported by Wrestling Inc., Sane said she developed her diving elbow into a finisher after an injury and wanted to win using her elbow. She also said she had been performing the diving elbow for about six years at the time of that interview.

That account gives the move a personal origin and makes Sane a strong choice for distinctiveness. It does not establish that her elbow was objectively better than Savage’s, or that the two performers used the same version in the same way. The comparison is about what each brought to the move: Savage’s signature identity and dramatic finish, versus Sane’s distinctive variation and stated motivation.

For historical recognition and a move that became part of a wrestler’s identity, Savage is the most defensible answer. WWE’s signature-move profile and its high placement in an all-time maneuver list provide the clearest support for that verdict. For a distinctive diving elbow with a personal story attached, Sane belongs in the conversation.

Those are different kinds of “best,” not a definitive ranking of every elbow drop user across wrestling promotions and eras. The available evidence supports a strong historical benchmark in Savage and a notable contrasting example in Sane; it does not support a comprehensive, objectively settled league table.
