The most recognizable cracked-doll look combines a smooth, pale porcelain-style base, exaggerated doll-like eyes and deliberately drawn cracks. For a quick version, keep your usual complexion makeup and add a few lines around one eye or cheek; for a more theatrical effect, build up the base and extend the cracks across the face. A precision-tip liquid eyeliner is useful for outlining fine cracks, while a black eye pencil can fill or deepen them.
Choose a cracked-doll look
Classic cracked porcelain doll
Start with a smooth base using concealer and foundation a little lighter than your usual shade, adjusted to your complexion and the effect you want. Add cool-toned shading around the eyes and doll-like cheek color if desired, then set the base. Draw a wing near one eye and extend a few fine, angular branches outward to suggest broken porcelain.
You can begin with a small design and build outward. One tutorial’s suggested route extends cracks from the eyes toward the temples, forehead, neck, sides of the face and lips, but that is one design option, not a required map. Use a precision-tip liquid eyeliner for the outlines; a black eye pencil can fill or deepen them. Follow each product’s intended-use labeling, especially near the eyes. Theatrical painted version
For a more painted, stage-inspired effect, use theatrical makeup formulated for the intended skin area. Minimal half-face or accent cracks
For a quicker interpretation, keep your regular complexion makeup and draw a small cluster of cracks around one eye, cheek or lip. This is an adaptation of the same crack-drawing approach: use fewer lines and keep them close to the feature you want to emphasize. Add more only if you have time and want a more extensive design.
What you need
- Black precision-tip liquid eyeliner: A practical choice for outlining fine cracks.
- Black cosmetic eye pencil: Useful for filling or deepening lines; choose one labeled for the eye area if applying it there.
- Lighter-than-usual concealer and foundation: Optional products for a fuller-coverage porcelain effect.
- Blending, smudge and detail brushes: Optional tools for shaping the base and applying details.
- Skin-intended theatrical makeup or face paint: An alternative for a painted look. Do not use craft paint or products not meant for skin.
You do not need every item: the base and brushes are optional, while the eyeliner is the key tool for drawing the cracks. The appropriate product depends on where you plan to apply it and what its label permits.

Apply the makeup step by step
- Check the product labels. Confirm that each product is intended for the area where you will use it, particularly around the eyes. Do not assume that a color or face paint allowed on one area is suitable for another.
- Build the base if you want the porcelain effect. Apply a lighter-than-usual concealer and foundation, then add optional cool-toned eye shading and cheek color. Set the makeup before drawing cracks.
- Plan a small starting design. Choose a spot near an eye, cheek or lip. If you are unsure about your lines, start somewhere less prominent before extending the design.
- Draw the cracks. Use a precision-tip liquid eyeliner to make fine, angular lines and branches. Add a wing or extend the lines toward the temples, forehead, face sides, neck or lips if those areas suit your design.
- Deepen selected lines. Use a black eye pencil to fill or strengthen parts of the cracks, provided the pencil is labeled for the area where you are applying it.
- Remove the makeup as directed. Follow the removal instructions on the product label and do not go to bed wearing makeup.
Choose products and apply them safely
Cosmetics and face paints are not interchangeable with craft products. The FDA advises using face products only as labeled, avoiding products whose warnings exclude the eye area, and checking that listed color additives are permitted for the intended use. A color additive allowed for skin is not necessarily allowed near the eyes. See the FDA’s guidance on novelty makeup for labeling, color additives, testing and removal.
If a product is unfamiliar, test it on your arm before using it on your face. The FDA’s Halloween safety guidance recommends testing makeup at least 24–48 hours in advance. For eye cosmetics, wash your hands, keep products clean, do not share them, and stop using a product if it causes irritation; the FDA covers these precautions in its guidance on eye cosmetics and cosmetic use.

Are colored contacts necessary?
No. Colored contacts are an optional costume accessory, not part of the makeup itself. If you choose to wear decorative lenses, the FDA advises seeing an eye-care professional for proper fitting and instructions.
